A severe storm heading for the UK could affect Leicestershire, bringing 70mph winds, uprooting trees and causing massive damage.

The deep depression is expected to cut across the south of England and the Met Office has issued an Amber Alert for many southern counties for Sunday and Monday, warning of damage to buildings, falling trees and winds faster than 80mph.

Leicestershire is subject to a lesser Yellow Warning, which still predicts winds above 70mph and disruption to power and transport.

Dave Mutton, the Leicester Mercury’s weatherman, said the storm had the potential to be the worst since October 1987's dramatic cyclone for Leicestershire.

He said: "At the moment it looks like we could get some extremely strong winds of at least 70mph.

"It will be from late Sunday until early Monday and it will be worst for the south coast but Leicestershire people should also be ready to batten down the hatches.

"It could be as damaging as the 1987 storm and is also going to bring at least an inch of rain.

"We could get a lot of flooding and we could see trees uprooted and power lines brought down.”

A Met Office spokeswoman said: "There is some continuing uncertainty in the timing, intensity and track of the low.

"However, the public should be aware of the risk of damage to trees and structures, as well as the possibility of disruption to transport and power supplies."

they're only 70 mph winds, so if you wait until it's blowing in the right direction and  drive a 70 it'll be like nothings happening at all

Well that'll be the tv fvcked then.

Fvcking Sky!!!

70 mph? Pah, a mere breeze. We had all the trolley kiosks at Tesco ripped out by the wind last year.

70mph

that's just a breeze in Scotland.

regularly have gusts above that here and perhaps a couple of stronger storms each year.

It really shouldn't be that bad.

Nobody has to drive in a dangerous storm. In fact it's pretty stupid.

I'm going to go to work Monday morning if the storm hasn't hit and made it impossible. I can't ring my boss and say I'll be off because we might be getting 70mph winds later, and then I'm at work, I have to get home, storms or not. I work for a coach company, we'll be ferrying 100s of kids to school Monday morning, in deckers. We can't not take them incase there is a storm in the afternoon, but if the storm hits we're still going to have to fetch them that afternoon. Deckers in 70mph winds, not a good mix.

If a tree blows over, through your house and breaks your neck you don't want them to send an ambulance then?

I'd hope that if the winds are dangerous then the deckers WILL be stopped for the short amount of time the storm rages. The children will be safer Inside the school, until it's over. Obviously I'm not talking about not driving when you don't know how bad the Wind is going to be. Most likely the storm won't be at all dangerous.
