Sky, Virgin or.......

Who would you recommend and why?

I've been with Sky for some years now because at the time having moved from NTL  they were the only people that could supply me with digital TV,

I get the whole package from them, phone, broadband & TV but I've become increasing pissed off with them the most recent incident being their offer of free broadband for a year which I applied for and they say I didn't, calling me a liar in all but name.

I've had some interesting sign up offers from Virgin including 1st year savings and a second Tivo box (not that I need one as there's only two of us) and I presume their broadband is guaranteed to be better but overall they seem more expensive.

I've tried just using freeview but it's so slow so that's not an option.

So can anyone say why they would recommend Virgin or anyone else?

I use Sky for telly, Virgin for telephone and broadband. I worked it out that's the cheapest and most reliable option for my house.

I was led to believe that bundles were always cheaper.

For the Sky telly I have it worked out a little bit less than having the bundle. That and Virgin doubled my Bb speed to 60mbps in the last 6mths, which is fairly consistent, though does depend on your distance from the exchange.

Virgin for all 3. Comes to around £800. But we have sports, children and movie packages. I pay my parents an extra £11.50 a month for my separate Virgin TiVo box in my room. So comes to around £91. It is expensive, but we get between 40-50Mbps on the broadband, free weekend calls and we've got the packages too.

I'm with BT for Telly, BB and phone and was very happy until recently! It seems that all the resources are focusing on the roll out of infinity, but unfortunately its not in our area yet so i'm stuck with a TV box that is essentially useless half the time!

If you are not in an infinity area don't even bother with them! If you are you may be alright and before this "upgrade" in the summer i was very happy with them.

I have this.

I was paying £108 a year with Virgin for it all (sports, movies, HD, broadband etc)

And I'm now paying Virgin £34 per month for 60mb broadband (my laptop downloads at 58mb) and £46 a month with sky for every channel they've got (HD) with x 2TB HD+ boxes.

Virgin Media is fibre optic cable so doesn't depend on how far you are from the exchange. That's the copper cable (DSL) you're thinking of. BT Infinity is also fibre optic cable but only to the cabinet. It uses copper cable to get it to the house which has an impact on speeds (i.e. distance from the cabinet, although that obviously won't be as far as distance from the exchange).

I'm with sky and pay around £90 a month, that's for TV, internet and phone.

TV I've got everything Multiroom, movies, sports, full HD.

The only thing I don't like about sky is having to have cables running through the living room whereas with Virgin you don't have that.

I pay sky £52 per month for complete tv broadband and phone package. You have to haggle them though and do your research to what else is available at what price.

TV and broadband sold on the same business model as utility companies.

They will give you a decent deal to get you to sign up or switch then they will slowly but surely creep all the prices up until after a couple of years you are pissed off and switch. Then the whole process begins again.

You will notice that via this system over a period of 18 months - 2 years your price is going up no matter what you do.

Not really, just ring up when your contract is up for renewal and get a better price. Quote deals from competitors and they are like putty in your hands.

I give Plusnet about £15 a month for phone and broadband.

I refuse to pay anyone for telly now having foolishly paid Sky for 11 years before realising the only thing I was watching that wasn't free was the Military History channel, and when you've watched that for 3 months you've seen it all anyway

Funny you should say that, having just called Sky to see if they could do me a comparable deal they basically said 'see ya!' lol

I think it was partly to do with the miserable **** on the phone though

out of curiosity, what package did you have?

Broadband, Sport, Movies and HD no multiroom. Was £60 a month but will go up to £90 which is a bit too steep.

BT looks like it has a comparable package for a lot cheaper

Have you tried to 'quit' before?

Nah first time. I've moved house and stopped my account but only cos the place I was moving to had it already

BT is doing a similar package minus Sky Sports 3 & 4 and movies for about the same price. Will have to have a proper search tomorrow

Currently on a 12 month half price offer from Sky, getting their top entertainment pack, HD and sports for £31.50 per month. Internet is with Virgin at £22.50 pm and have BT Sport at £15pm. No phone, mobile only.

Virgin are by far and away the best for broadband. Free call outs, very easy to get hold of in the rare time it goes down and unlimited, fast and newly unrestricted downloads too.

Virgin's TV service is good but with sports it can be expensive. Sky alone is about £34 and that's with only SS1 and SS2 in HD. However you can access your hard drivef rom your online account, deleting and changing recordings. Virgin does not have a dynamic EPG though, so if a programme overruns or changes it's up to you to change it.

I'll be reviewing my options when the contract ends with Sky in August. If neither company was giving way on price then I'd probably go with Virgin because TiVO seems far more versatile than the Sky box, and I wont entertain switching my broadband from anyone while the competition is the way it is and I use as much as I do.
