Uncle Monty Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 Middlesbrough have confirmed the appointment of Aitor Karanka as the club's new head coach. The Spaniard has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at the Riverside and becomes the club's first foreign head coach. Boro have been without a permanent boss since Tony Mowbray's departure last month, but chairman Steve Gibson has acted after Karanka was heavily linked with the vacant managerial position at Crystal Palace. "It's a very important day for me," Karanka told a press conference. "It's my first job and the best thing for me because I am joining a club that is like a family with big facilities, a big stadium and big supporters
Dan Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 Joins Middlesbrough and the first thing he does is call the fans fat.
Guest MattP Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 Another job given to a foreign coach who has done absolutely nothing in management. Why isn't he working his way up the Spanish league instead rather than here? Good Luck Boro, this guy will know as much about the Championship as Sven and he'll have about 5% of the money to spend.
Donut Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 He might be a great coach, but completely untried, cant imagine he would be cheap, and probably knows nothing about Boro's squad. A glamour type appointment but one that could go either way with not much in between
ousefox Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 Will either do really well or end up like Solbakken.
Corky Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 Interesting move, he's worked under a top manager and the last good Boro manager had the same (McClaren with Ferguson, not Jim Smith!). Got to be an improvement on Southgate and Strachan, which were awful appointments, and Mowbray lost the plot in 2013.

They should be thankful for that part!
purpleronnie Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 A big stadium yes, but he'll soon realize its half empty on matchday's.
filbertway Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 He won't be a mug having worked under Mourihno for 3 seasons. I'm backing borough to do well
iamafox Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 He could follow in the footsteps of Clarke, AVB and Rodgers (all worked with Mourinho) and become a good manager himself.

The Horse's Mouth Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 Might be interesting to see how well they do, I wouldn't be surprised if they get a few Chelsea loans with his connections. It's a gamble, but at this point there isn't much for them to lose.

If Crystal Palace appoint a foreign manager then that will be half the Premier League under foreign management and only 4 English managers. Would never happen in Spain, Germany or Italy. Got to blame the FA for appointing foreign England managers.
Guest Bilo Posted 13 November 2013 Posted 13 November 2013 I can't see this working out for the reasons MattP has stated. He must know next to nothing about English football, little money to spend and a very average team to start on. He might get a handful of Chelsea loans, I doubt he'll get too many Real loans. Imagine leaving the Bernabeu and being dumped in Teesside for three months!

The first foreign manager in England was in 1963. More likely that foreign owners prefer foreign managers and also Arsene Wenger's success rather than the FA's fault.

We had foreign managers taking charge of domestic teams long before Sven was appointed.

Well they are supposed to develop and encourage the use of English players, managers, coaches etc. By appointing a foreign manager for England they are basically sending out a message that foreign managers are superior, English managers are not good enough etc and that basically gets into the national football psyche. When they appointed Eriksson there were 11 English managers and 3 foreign managers in the Premier League. Now there are 4 English managers and 9 foreign managers in the Premier League..
