AndWhat? Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 100% relegation to League 1. Was also probably one of my favourite seasons supporting Leicester on the road as well.
Corky Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 I've had taken promotion last season but should we complete the job this year it will be so much sweeter, consistent football, fantastic results and no appalling run like the 9 games without a win between February and April. Going up with 68 points is hardly a glorious achievement, I'd rather go up as champions than scraping 6th. Anyway, we've used two depressing moments (relegation was far, far worse) and turned it around very quickly. Although I would say 2009/10 was probably just as important as we finally starting winning regularly and challenging at this level. It gave us belief that we could return to the top flight and not settle for survival and excuses every year like 2004-08.
midland_red Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 The best worst thing that ever happened to us was not going up last year. We wouldn't have been ready for it and would have come straight back down again. It was that experience that help build a side which is much tougher mentally, and gave Pearson the change to mature too. If we go up (still can't bring myself to say 'when') we will have a much better chance of staying up as a result of that penalty at Watford.
Jace Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Sven. on 1 hand he was great, on the other he was terrible!
Guy Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Definitely agree that our relegation to League One six years ago was "the best-worst thing" to ever happen to our club - although it might have backfired on us had we not got straight back up - with all the quality loan signings we had and highish wages being paid to the players within the club back then, considering the level we were at. Running that a close second was the penalty miss at Watford in the play offs last season - as I feel that it prevented what would have probably been an instant return to the Championship next season after one season in the top flight this season - assuming we'd have gone on to beat Palace at Wembley of course (again........!) I feel that the team just wouldn't have been good enough to compete well in the Prem with last season's team as they were...ie 17 without a win leading up to our last gasp win at Forest! Basically a year on the team have bonded more now, last season the team was disjointed and the players not so familiar with each other as a unit as they are now after spending 'a season plus' together - plus going through that play offs experience appears to have made those in that team last May stronger and playing to ensure that the same thing doesn't happen again - this by finishing above the play offs zone this time! It still remains to be seen of course but I cant see even us messing this one up now!
Fox Ulike Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Given the progress this team has made, I think that had we gone up last year we'd have survived in the Prem this season. However, can't deny that the extra season has given this team a real chance to bond and grow together. I am very optimistic for the future. Relegation to L1, for me, is still the worst football day of my life. Given that we have never won the League, or the FA Cup, the fact that we were a select band of clubs that had spent their whole history in the top two divisions was a source of pride... It was something we had to throw back at the Forest fans parroting "we won the European Cup"...
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Relegation to league 1 is by far the best worst thing to happen to us as we haven't really looked back since apart from one slightly dodgy season (Sousa / Sven)
lavrentis Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Best worst thing was League 1 We got rid of the deadwood and for me at least it signalled a new start. Felt almost like a new club, havn't looked back since then
Kitchandro Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Uhuh. Sven that brought in our international goalkeeper, our top scorer on a free and our first choice left back? Sousa who, it could be argued, introduced the passing game that we still maintain today? Both are important parts of the journey we've been on and both were better than the mess we were in pre-relegation. Had we not gone down, Pearson would likely never have come to the club. You're kidding right? Christ you talk some shit sometimes. Sousa was absolutely dogshit. Not only do we play nothing like we did under Sousa, we also had the Sven bit in between where we reverted to negative boring nothingness, so even if you did argue that we played some good football under Sousa, it certainly hasn't contributed to the way we play now. Sven did a very poor job and if you remember rightly it actually took Pearson quite a while to reverse the crap that he'd left us with - Nugent, Schmeichel and maybe Konchesky aside. The idea that Sousa can take some credit for this season's success pull the other one.
THEBIGJOHNSTEADER; Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Defo getting rid of the balti pies, since then people have spent last time gobbling them and also wanking in them and more time supporting the players on the pitch, which has helped improve the team performances this season. The futures bright, the futures steak and kidney

To be fair if you sign about 30 players for 80 odd million by the law of averages you would expect 3/4 to be half decent. I'm not going to give Sven credit for that. The passing game under Sousa was a negative mindset of knocking it around in your own half, not to mention he completely neglected the defensive side of the division by adding the awful Moreno into centre back. Right on the last point regarding Pearson though.
HEGGSY Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 League One without a shadow of a doubt. Great season, got that feeling of winning games again, Pearson, the over achievement of getting play offs the season after. Horrible at the time, but has been for the best, just like Knockys pen is proving this year. Hey, hindsight is a wonderful thing
Freeman's Wharfer Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Uhuh. Sven that brought in our international goalkeeper, our top scorer on a free and our first choice left back? No it couldn't! Sousa came in, completely changed the style to one which didn't work with the players that we had, leaving us nowhere near getting any results. Sven didn't build on Sousa's style and the only legacy that he left was the likes of Moreno and Vitor. To say that we are maintaining a passing game today that was introduced by Sousa is to massively discredit what Pearson's done and the style that he has gradually built (in the right way). In answer to the question it's undoubtedly relegation to League One. Without that we would have no Pearson. Everything that we have done since that relegation has been down to Pearson and without that relegation we wouldn't have Pearson here today. It's the relegation to League One. Close thread.

Wait, we were boring under Sven? I remember some superb attacking football under him. Naughton's goal and King's against Derby were two that come to mind.

Naughton's goal and King's against Derby were two that come to mind. In 2010/11 we were great to watch, fantastic going forward but could not defend. 2011/12 Sven seemed to stifle the attacking threat to compensate for the defensive solidity. Pearson has got the balance correct at the moment.
Tielemans63 Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Administration must be one of the best worst things to happen to the club.
CPW22 Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Relegation to league one sparked the resurgence of the club so I think that's the best worst thing in recent years.
fazzyfox Posted 15 March 2014 Posted 15 March 2014 The day that Mark McGee bought a copy of the Wolverhampton Evening News and found the "Vacancies" section, we were angry and disappointed as we amended our "The future's marked out" T-shirts with the phrase "The future's just f***ed Off". How we will find someone to continue our bid for promotion? Why is this new guy selling Joachim and Corica? Our season is dooooomed.
