Just after a bit of advice. Soon to be traveling cereal America from Panama up to Mexico, and don't have a lot of prior info of the region.

Anyone who's been or could help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I've been twice on two different trips including a month living in Nicaragua teaching at a University there so will be able to offer plenty of advice mate.

Panama, Costa Rica and Nicaragua in particular I should be quite good on.

Feel free to DM me where you're going and what you want to know and I'll happily help!

You'll probably need someone who can speak english so I'll hire him out to you.

I'll say 'si'

It is slightly worrying though. Some serious poverty out there. I've spent a bit of time in SE Asia and there was genuine poverty all around but for some reason I've been warned more about Central America.

Did Cancun down to Granada in Nicaragua in September, seriously amazing you will love it.

Learning some Spanish is a must, i knew very little which made things difficult and have since started taking lessons recently as i'm keen to head back and do more of it when i have more time.

Advice - Umm it's Central America learn to go with the flow and learn to embrace there cultures. Chicken Busses are a love/hate relationship try your best to try and get on them early and with a window seat as no air con when it's 30 plus degrees is not fun but they are an expierence.

Make Sure you get to Caye Caulker, Roaton Island, Rio Dulcie and Antigua

I've been a couple of times. Fantastic part of the world. Best places I went were ometepe in Nicaragua, Antigua (the city not this island) in Guatemala, Copan ruins in Honduras and pretty much anywhere in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is great because they're geared up for tourists but it's not ruined by tourists like some parts of Mexico.

I found most parts pretty safe but in particular Managua and Tegucigalpa are extremely forgettable places. Probably the 2 worst cities I've ever visited. San Jose Costa Rica on the other hand is a really nice city.

The most English is spoken in Costa Rica. The cheapest is Nicaragua.

DM me if you want any further info.

Yeah I went there too to get the ferry to Roatan. Shithole Central.

Yep it's not the Murder Capital of the world for nothing, Hookers and Gangs on every corner, really lovely. Was only place in the world i've actually been a little bit scared to leave the hotel.

Yeah I made it as far as the closest place to eat, then back to the hotel room brisk walk back. I remember finding hairs on the bed - sheets hadn't been changed and water coming out the tap was brown. lol.

Cheers lads, I'm going with my misses so I need to be careful. I'd normally not be too fussed buts she's not travelled as much and is a little worried.

I'll certainly do my best to swerve those places, and I think Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Gautamala are the places we intend to spend most time. 4-5 months all together.

Panama to start (after Cuba and Jamaica) then Mexico at the end for flights to New Orleans.

Honduras - is it a worry? Think she's read some horror stories.

Most places on the coast speak English, and Belize is an English speaking country, but learning Spanish will help. Don't worry too much about planning things, and don't pre book anything, just have a rough itinerary and get to Panama City, stay in a hostel and chat to people, see what they recommend, find other couples to travel with, this is probably a must, you'll need some time apart, even the tightest of couples will have arguments when travelling together and spending 24/7 with each other, it's pretty intense, and there is no place to go...

I did a round trip, so went up the East Coast of Panama and Costa Rica, crossed into Nicaragua and then came back down the west coast, missed loads of things though, but stayed in a hammock hotel in Costa Rica and went to Tortuguero (sp) and watched the turtles come in and lay eggs, that was probably a highlight, only accessible by boat through howler monkey infested jungle. And stayed on an organic coffee plantation on Ometepe that was just a great place to chill out and drink rum.

A great, backpacker place to stay was the monkey hut in Nicaragua, http://www.themonkeyhut.net/monkey/

I would personally say avoid the capital cities, Panama City being the exception, and eat everything, the food is amazing and dirt cheap, have fun y sigue practicando tu castellano.

And make sure you learn Latin American Spanish, because you could think you are saying I caught the blue shell, but you are actually saying I fvcked the blue vagina...

Pero es la puta madre, disfrutalo!

Dont be stupid everywhere you go its happy hour lol

Good point, and as you aren't specifying what size beer, you will probably only get small beers, but then you will have 2 so the job is a good 'un.

  Salud!

Captain that's ace thanks. That's pretty much the plan regarding Panama City then onwards.

Hostels definitely the way forward, other couples are always a great option.

May contemplate a spanish course early days if I'm not happy with my progress, anyone do one?

Also, Panama City? Tell me more.

I did similar - it's an incredible national park - well worth the visit. We went out to see the turtles at night. A Jaguar had killed one on the beach the day before so it was a bit weird standing out on a beach in a thunderstorm watching this 8 ft long turtle lay eggs, with big cats somewhere nearby in the bushes! Spent about 3 days in that park seeing wildlife and in a hammock living it up.
