Police warn against offensive chanting when Leicester City play Brighton

Like to see a police statement, clarifying why they feel the need to make that statement to LCFC FANS.

It might reveal or prove more interesting, than anything that MIGHT come off the Terrasses

We're going as the Village people for fancy dress tonight, get the feeling we might have some explaining to do.

"We won't tolerate racist or homophobic chanting at this Tuesday's game against Brighton.

Or indeed any game, right?

Seems a bit unnecessary to say it, it should already be obvious to everyone.

It's about time they clarified what's classed as homophobic chanting as well, if fans can't agree on it how can the stewards?

Are people going to be dragged out and sent to court for singing "We can see you holding hands" or "Does your boyfriend you're here"

is it homophobic to assume the need to make the statement because brighton are in town?

I don't think so.

The police aren't trying to second guess what might happen based on Brighton's reputation. Instead they're basing their 'prediction' on the behaviour of fans in the past - everyone knows the type of chants that are sung in this fixture so it's fair to assume that it will happen again.

That said it doesn't bother me that certain chants get sung. You can tell they aren't malicious.

Or it could just be one of these pro-forma maneuvers in order to justify the police's yearly budget. Sometimes, they are simply obliged to mark excessive presence.

No offense intended.

Of course not! Ridiculous comment. How does that line of reasoning follow? They are on the receiving end of lots of homophobic chants so the police warn fans against homophobic chanting (makes sense). When we entertain Tottenham (I am loving saying that) next year then I have no doubt that we will be warned about anti semitic chanting; this doesn't make the warning itself anti semitic? In neither instance does it make either set of fans gay or Jewish either and in neither instance is it acceptable if either set of fans is either gay or Jewish. I am trying to figure out your reasoning.....you believe that such a statement reinforces the stereotype? But by saying that then you seem to be suggesting that to be gay is a bad thing! The point is that to be homophobic is the bad thing! Whilst chants of this nature (or based on race) are directed at particular clubs, whether it is our club actively engaging in those chants or not, then such warnings from the police will continue and are appropriate.

wow.

it wasnt a statement, it was a question.

I'll be bitterly disappointed if I hear any of it, it's just pathetic. Saw a guy on twitter make a chant about Was and his dad murdering Anne Frank. I hate all this "banter", its not an excuse to be incredibly offensive or inappropriate.

lol  how did the song go?

No of course it's not. Brighton is associated with gay people. Publically acknowledging that association isn't homophobic.

I understand where you're coming from though. It's difficult not to feel patronised when the Police issue statements like this. You have to remember though that, unfortunately, there are some sad individuals out there who need to be reminded of this sort of thing.

The Police can't really win with issues like this.

strikes me as very faulty towers, "dont mention the war"

why not?

black people come every week, we dont get a statement with each one, only when "the gays" are coming

Or perhaps because we have a history of singing homophobic songs and not racist ones.

Three people were arrested after Leicester City's match against Brighton on Tuesday night on suspicion of indecent or racist chanting.

Chief Inspector Steve Potter, the commander for the match, said: "Following the match three people, aged 17, 18 and 22, were arrested on suspicion of indecent or racist chanting under Section 3 of the Football Offences Act.

"The 22-year-old was released no further action, the 18-year-old was issued with a caution and the 17-year-old has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

"One person was ejected from the ground for pitch incursion.

“We will continue to work with the club to ensure the fans have a safe and enjoyable experience at the ground.”

On Monday, the force tweeted: “We won’t tolerate racist or homophobic chanting at this Tuesday’s game against Brighton. If you hear it report it to steward or officer.”

The force promised to review its handling of offensive chanting at Leicester City matches after a Channel Four Dispatches programme, screened last month, showed footage of police apparently taking no action against visiting Millwall and Nottingham Forest fans who were making obscene chants this season.
