Gypsies On Benefits And Proud

No, not the front page of today's Daily Mail, but a documentary on Channel 5 tomorrow night.

Even in terms of poverty porn this one looks a bit much but I thought I'd start a thread given the success of the Benefits Street thread from a few months ago.

Naturally, we'll go with the Mail report.

Could be worth a watch.

One thing I hate more than gypos and thats all these bullshit documentaries almost glorifying their lifestyle.

I doubt you'll find many people from Harborough that don't have a hatred towards them.

Before you post it Ken I'll get in here.

I don't blame the Romany benefit claimants for this at all, if I was in their position I would do the same.

The blame lies with the politicians who have entered into a political union that allows things as ridiculous as this to happen.

I don't know any gypsies but I always assumed they lived on the road buying and selling and not needing benefits all the time. There may be some that give the others a bad name but I do not know the stats which will mostly likely differ according to whether you are a NIMBY right or SOFTY left. I will probably give the programme a miss. The title of the programme is a bit of a give away as to the content. I doubt there will be any well mannered hard working people featured and I doubt they would see the programme as they go on the road to be away from modern day life,

Frustrating as it might seem, you can't let stuff like this get to you, otherwise you just become a bitter angry person who is so heart - hardened that you'll dump those who genuinely need help in the same basket.

My focus is on my own life and my family. I know I can walk down the street with my head held high.

I also can relax knowing they'll never make a documentary about me! lol

Of course you shouldn't, but you should always try to create a fair society and fight for that.

To get into a position where some large families are in positions to decide which country to move to based on how what you can rake in off the state is not going to end well for anyone.

Wish I was one of those canal gypsies where I could just float through a lock peppered with shopping trollies with a scruffy dog called Tugboat and a couple of my wives. Now that is living the dream.

Not those landlubber gypo scum, though, they can fvck off.

The 'gypsies' to which you refer are Irish travellers, and have no cultural link to the Roma, who it seems are the subject of this documentary. Let's face it, they are not going to travel far in a house.

Yes but to some people they are all lumped together. Anyway Let's see how they do it first

Skateboard busker who lost both legs in an accident to feature in TV documentary "Gypsies on Benefits and Proud"

Viorel Dinu busking in Leicester city centre

A Romanian man is set to feature in a Channel Five documentary which starts tomorrow night.

Viorel Dinu, who lost both legs in an accident when he was seven, is one of six Roma gypsies to be featured in ‘Gypsies on Benefits and Proud.’

The 25-year-old, who uses a skateboard to get around, will be a familiar face to shoppers in Leicester as he often comes to the city to busk, playing the accordion in Gallowtree Gate.

His story will be featured in the Channel 5 programme, which examines the lives of six Roma gypsies living in the UK.

Viorel, who lives in Nottingham, tells how he had to beg to get by in Romania.

He gets benefits of £750 a month here.

“I come to the UK ‘cos I don’t have a nice life there,” he said. “In Romania it’s very hard with the moneyicon1.png and everything. The money that I have is not exactly what I need, but what can I do, I must say thank you for this one.

“In England is more better life because here they don’t look on you if you black or not, they don’t think if your gypsy or not.

“Every door is open here, this is the most easy.”

Viorel is learning to read and write English.

“Because I have so many years on this skateboard, I learn myself. This is my legs for now. I call it my little car.”

Jacqui Wilson, the show’s executive producer, said: “People should watch this programme before jumping to conclusions. Some of its revelations will make people think twice about gypsies in the UK.”

The programme in on at 9pm.

What could be amazing about this is how a so called "proud people" that have gone so far out of the way to defend a certain way of life for hundreds of years could be convinced to change it so quickly as soon as you wave a bit of free money at them.

EDIT: Where the hell is he I have to go into town and pick him up?!! Gallowtree Gate fantastic!

Back in 1983, for 2 weeks I was employed as live-in, sub-contract labour by a family of French gypsies.

It was during the Champagne grape harvest. They came back every year to pick some particular vineyards for a winegrower, and were a hand short. I asked them what they did outside grape-picking season and they said that for winter they drove into Paris and sold sweets on the streets. Probably other fruit/grapes to pick the rest of the year.

They treated me very well. The live-in accommodation was the back of one of their cars, so I didn't get to sleep in the caravan, but used to go in there for a chat. They paid me the going rate (French minimum wage) in cash, and served up a good hot dinner, bread and cheese and a bottle of cheap wine every evening.

It was interesting, but threw up a few cliches. There were 2 brothers, aged about 18 and 20, but the younger one was seen as senior as he was married. I thought that I was in the crap one day as, while cutting the grapes, I accidentally gave him a nasty cut to the hand with my secateurs, and he was a strong, fiery character. No problem, though. The older lad was more easy-going.

One night they all went off for a knife fight with some other gypsies. Out of politeness and self-preservation, I asked them what they expected me to do about this, but they told me that I needn't get involved!  :sweating: Nobody seemed to have been stabbed or cut when they came back, so I assume that it was a load of bravado and posturing.

There was a sister, too, aged 14-15, and I remember the grandmother grinning at me, wagging her finger and saying "Touches pas à la chatte!" ("Don't touch the female cat / pussy!")  lol

I've seen that guy a few times. Never knew he was a gypsy. It is hardly free money if he has no legs. He would be entitled to it because of his disability although it would be reduced if he is making money busking. It would not be hard for the authorities to know.

Should he be claiming and busking?

Gypsy bashing. Shameful.

Gypsy bashing is so 1980's.

Looking at the picture of that guy on Gallowtree Gate Gypsy Tossing is clearly the future.
