European Football Weekends

Not sure how many people there are on Foxestalk who go abroad to watch football?? Just thought it would be cool to discuss future trips, past trips, wish lists etc.

A bit slow at work today so been looking at trips for next season.

Just worked out that there's a direct sleeper train from Belgrade to Sofia and then direct trains from Sofia to Thessaloniki.

With not to expensive direct flights from Britain to Belgrade and return from Thessaloniki, it's looking doable! Just got to hope the fixture god helps me out.

Also looking at doing Feyenoord and I'm sure another trip over to Bochum will be on the cards, probably away to St Pauli as one of our mates has just recently moved to Hamburg.

Anyone looking at hopping over the channel next season? or did anyone go the season just gone and fancies sharing their experience?

There is a match on every weekend in Sofia and Belgrade as most of the decent teams in those respective leagues are from those cities. However you better hope it's a decent derby otherwise you'll be watching a wrestling match in a crumbling stadium in front of 2000 meat-heads.

The Thessaloniki - Sofia train goes all the way to Moscow via Bucharest and Kiev.

They're all nice cities in their own way.

I'm desperate to do a few European games but I'm a few years too young, unfortunately.

I'd like to go to the obvious German ones, Ajax/Feyenoord, Rapid Vienna and maybe a Turkish game (I'd be quite apprehensive about it though haha)

That's what I go for!

Went to Frankfurt v Schalke last season, was my first ever proper foreign game and I'm definitely doing one again. German football lived up to the hype.

The ones who I went with seem to have adopted Frankfurt as a bit of a second team and they fancy going to Koln, so Koln v Frankfurt may be on the agenda - fixture list dependant.

Might have to do Anderlecht.

The Frankfurt home terrace looks ****ing beautiful!

Did you manage to get in it?

Me and a few mates try and get away to a random European city a few times a year and throw some football in too. General rule is the randomer the team the better!

Places we've been so far:

Copenhagen & Malmo - Really nice but expensive city Copenhagen. Massive stadium which is the Danish national ground and decent match (3-1 to Copenhagen with Bryan Oviedo now of Everton getting on the score sheet!). We then got the train to Malmo for a couple of nights which was nowhere near as good.

Gdansk - Definitely recommended! We got dirt cheap flights with Ryanair and match tickets were about a tenner. Even better, as we're outside the ticket office some Polish girl comes up to me and gives me a leaflet. I ask her what it is for and she explains it is for the 'Green Lounge'. I ask what that is and she tells me it's a lounge bar inside the stadium open for 2 hours before the match and 1 hour after. It's 10 Euros to get in, unlimited free beer, table football, Playstations with FIFA, unlimited free food (cooked fresh by the chef in front of you)! Needless to say we can't remember much of the actual match and didn't really care much about the game from that point onwards...

Dusseldorf - Went in April and whilst there wasn't a great deal to do there the nightlife is decent (particularly Thursday, Friday, Saturday) and there are a couple of teams to watch. On the Saturday we went to see some team called KFC who once won the German Cup and play in a 20,000+ stadium but after the rich benefactor who was financing them pulled out they have dropped to the German fifth tier! On the Sunday we went to see Fortuna who have a fantastic stadium and play in the second tier.

Tallinn - Nice little city for a weekend away and we squeezed in a FC Flora Tallinn match in as well. It was a local derby and 1st v 2nd at the time. Not the best standard but they play in the national stadium and we took advantage of the novelty of being English by wandering onto the pitch at full-time to have a look around. Just to the left of us one of the managers was being interviewed so when he was finished we had a word with him and got a photo, turns out he's got the record number of caps for Estonia!

Budapest - Fantastic city for a city break. We had 4 nights there, all of which were great and we managed to fit in a Ujpest II cup match. The attendance must have been about 150 and the standard was pretty poor with the exception of a Romanian left back who was clearly too good for the level he was playing at and also clearly not a defender. Step overs, rabonas, looking one way but passing the other, this guy had it all! Five English lads cheering him on from the stand only seemed to spur him on to do more outrageous things each time he got the ball.

Vilnius - Really picturesque city, cheap and decent nightlife. We also saw FC Vilnius who only have one covered stand (for members only) and it absolutely bucketed down. They were playing a team who to this day have only scored one goal all season and they battered them 7-0. One of the highlights has to be the 'ticket office' which was actually a woman sat in the back of a car with a laptop and the window wound halfway down!

I'd recommend any of these places for a weekend away and a bit of random European football. I dream of the day that Leicester get back into Europe and are drawn in a group of 5 or 6, some of whom are random Eastern European teams with ramshackle grounds and awful players!

Leicester's 'twin' team from Krefeld. They were in the Bundesliga less than 20 years ago. Have never got round to seeing them but it does look like an interesting stadium.

Top three on the wishlist are Saint-Etienne, Genoa and Feyenoord I think.

In terms of Belgrade, you shouldn't have many issues on any weekend really, either Red Star or Partizan will be at home. If one is playing a 'minnow' side at home then just travel away  (won't be too difficult I'd imagine) with the other side. They always travel in decent numbers, plenty of tifo and pyro and ultra mentality.

I'd love to go to an Etienne game.

I think the club cracked down on their ultras though unfortunately.

I'd like to go to a Schalke game to be honest. Was impressed with their fans despite being 5-0 or whatever it was down to Real.

They haven't. The two Kop ends have a serious rush when they bag. It's amazing to look at.

Just make sure you learn the words: ein leben lang, keine schale in der hand.

I've never been abroad to watch European football with friends, my Uncle was in Germany with the Army, based in Rheindahlen and he took me and my cousin to a Borussia Monchengladbach game, they had Michael Bradley playing for them, as Rheindahlen was close to the Dutch border he took us to PSV Eindhoven as well, still the best stadium I have been too.

Thinking of going England v Estonia, in Estonia, flights are ridiculous already though so we're considering flying to Helsinki and then getting a ferry across to Estonia.

Saw Borussia Mönchengladbach in Feb, which was an unreal experience. Travelled around Cologne and Düsseldorf for 4 days as well. Lovely places to visit. Hoping to get to another Bundesliga game in December when i'm in Bavaria.

Had a whatsapp video from one of my old workmates about a month ago who had finally gone to Boca v River at La Bombanera, to say I was jealous is an understatement, that's the ultimate one and I've got to do it.

I've been to Bayern, Hamburg, Valencia, Malaga, Werdern Bremen and Armenia Bielefeld. Would recommend all although Bremen is a bit of a dump, probably didn't help we took two kickings in the space of three hours though in between 12am and 3am, one in a pub then we somehow ended up in a subway.

I want to do a game in France next season and we did plan for the Seville derby this year bit didn't make it and now that's off for at leats two years.

Hansa Rostock v St Pauli as well if the former can get their arse in gear.

Definitely on my European football game Bucket List.

Preferably in the away end at Rostock!

I was in Madrid about 12 years ago and took my non football supporting mate to the Bernabeu.

Real were playing Las Palmas and ended up winning 7-0.  Morientes scored 5 of them, Zidane got one too.

He still bangs on about it being his first ever football match.

I also remember Vinny Samways was playing (very badly) for Las Palmas.

I've also been to games at Besiktas, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Basel when travelling for work.  All really good experiences and would highly recommend it.

I once went to Chicago Fire.  That was not so good.

I'd love to go to some European games but I am only 14, too young to go abroad by myself and don't have another money. Want to go when I am 18 with my mates who would be interested on going.

Dinamo vs Hakduk is always a good game to watch, nice stadia, good football, bit of pyro and plenty of female ultras.
