European Football Weekends

Had a whatsapp video from one of my old workmates about a month ago who had finally gone to Boca v River at La Bombanera, to say I was jealous is an understatement, that's the ultimate one and I've got to do it.

I've been to Bayern, Hamburg, Valencia, Malaga, Werdern Bremen and Armenia Bielefeld. Would recommend all although Bremen is a bit of a dump, probably didn't help we took two kickings in the space of three hours though in between 12am and 3am, one in a pub then we somehow ended up in a subway.

I want to do a game in France next season and we did plan for the Seville derby this year bit didn't make it and now that's off for at leats two years.

Hansa Rostock v St Pauli as well if the former can get their arse in gear.

How was Hamburg? My brother has got a job there for a year so I am probably going to go over and go to a game.

I once went to Chicago Fire.  That was not so good.

I forgot LA v Seattle Sounders, sat with the ACB (Angel City Brigade) and they were a very un-American, lot of songs, couple of flairs, decent songs.

You'll love it.

Use three words and you won't go wrong for a good night "Reeperbahn" then "Flower Market" - In that order.

I'll PM you a story about it later, I can't post it up on here anymore as too many people know who I am lol

Not anymore! The owner of Dinamo Zagreb has killed the fan scene at the club. In Split it would still be immense though.

Do you know what exactly he has done? Saw losds of Blue Boys (ultras) graffiti when I was in Zagreb and similarly in Split with their ultras.

Mate of mine has just moved over there too. Need to make sure I get myself over there for when Bochum play away at Pauli.

Without using google....... I'm pretty sure the owner of Zagreb is the head of the Croatian Football Association and a known crook. He's basically on a mission to destroy the Bad Blue Boys. A lot of their members are currently serving lengthy prison terms for things as small as using flares.

And at a game a couple of weekends ago any caught with being in a section different to their ticket or without a ticket at all was arrested.

I went to Hajduk v Dinamo a couple of years back as part of my mates stag do. Best / scariest atmosphere I've experienced by a distance. Would probably shit myself at the Belgrade derby.

Got a wife and a sproggin now so obviously don't travel much these days but went fairly regularly to European games in my mid-twenties. I half started to follow FC Koln as flights there always seemed to be dirt cheap. I went to a few Sparta games in Holland too as flights to Rotterdam were usually quite reasonable. A few of us went to watch Lille in Northern France a couple of times too. If you're young, got some spare cash and a few enthusiastic mates I can't recommend it highly enough - great fun.

Going back to the original post, it seems a bit much to do the overnight train when you can there are buses to and from each of those cities that take about 4-5 hours.

I will look into that! Got any links to sites?

I was just playing around on the DBahn website which has train times for all of Europe.

I dunno about sites but I'm sure there are two buses a day from Belgrade to Sofia and at least 2 on to Thessaloniki.

That DBahn site is great fun.

Lille looks quality.

I'm with MattP big time regarding Boca. Their fans are quality.

Just the Seville derby for me in Easter. We got a private tour a couple of years ago but it was in summer so we just got to go on the pitch instead!

Atmosphere was better than I've ever witnessed and our Spanish friends got us seats perfectly on the half way line so we had a cracking view.

Couldn't recommend it more and Seville is an incredible city that I'm surprised isn't visited more by British people. The warm evenings make it so sociable - the place is just as busy at night as it is in the day. It was their Holy Week too which was a pretty remarkable thing to see.

Probably not hipster enough for many but this season I had a week in Madrid / Paris where I saw Real Madrid beat Levante on the Sunday, Atletico Madrid beat AC Milan on the Tuesday, and PSG beat Bayer Leverkusen on the Wednesday.

The atmosphere at Atletico was sensational, PSG was surprisingly good as well. Real Madrid fans are just there to be entertained.

It's given me a taste for more so I'm looking forward to planning next season when the fixtures come out.

Always associated hipsters with the opposite, doing the big grounds because it doesn't require a lot of effort as long as you're willing to pay through the nose and act the tourist the whole time you're there. The kinds of people who come from the home counties and describe Barca as their "first team", probably Arsenal or Chelsea as their "second" and Wycombe or Gillingham as their local team they support ironically.

The kind of idiot who writes a list like this: http://www.buzzfeed.com/austinhunt/21-soccer-stadiums-you-should-watch-a-game-in-before-you-die

No problem with people who want to go to the Nou Camp/Bernabeu etc (and I'm guessing your own experience differs from the one I just described) but I reckon it would all be a bit too touristy for my taste. I'd love to experience a game at Dortmund but wouldn't want to go unless I was on the terrace for example. Give me a ticket in the Aris end at the Thessaloniki derby over El Classico any day.
