fleckneymike Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 As the usual excitement builds in the transfers thread over players with exotic sounding names and equally exciting transfer fees, it struck me that I couldn't recall the last promoted side who bought in a successful striker from outside the British isles, rather successful teams bought players with them or bought from the championship.Norwich succeeded off the back of Grant Holts excellent strike rate, likewise Southampton benefitted from Lambert and Rodriguez, Frazier Campbell bagged more than the grossly overpriced Corneilson and Hull bought established premier league strikers. Further back WBA relied on Long, Wolves and Sunderland with Fletcher with only QPR's purchase of Loic Remy, on wages we will never pay, and Swansea after 3 years buying Bony (Michu is an attacking midfielder after all) being regarded successes (although QPR were relegated).Whilst Pearson's transfer dealing are generally excellent and the scouting thorough I doubt we'll be purchasing a forward from outside the British leagues.
Wilfshaw Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Nicholas Bendtner now on the radar apparently! Too much of an ego for The Foxes me thinks.
fleckneymike Posted 28 May 2014 Author Posted 28 May 2014 The forwards signed by promoted clubs tend to be the big, bustling type with experience of this league. I'd say Ulloa and Bendtner fit that bill perfectly.
Master Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 We need to sign two maybe three new forwards. Nige needs to splash some cash.
Finnaldo Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 The forwards signed by promoted clubs tend to be the big, bustling type with experience of this league. I'd say Ulloa and Bendtner fit that bill perfectly. I wouldn't mind Bendtner here. Obviously he has the ego but if Pearson could manage to subdue him a bit and get out the form he has for Denmark he could be extremely useful.
kingfox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 He obviously wants a target man type of striker, with muscle and can link well with probably Vardy if we opt for two up front. Looks as if, he wants a striker who will also be back up, but can do a job when called upon, and Frazier Campbell for £1 million is good enough. There is always a risk factor on any striker, that comes over from abroad, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. There's great potential oversees, there are very good young players who have already bagged like 15 goals a season. But we want instant success, and if we do get a striker from abroad, for one he might not show his potential straight away, and two it could take time to settle in, and three they could be a complete failure. However in England, of the players we have been linked with Ulloa and Bendtner hardly catch our attention, and personally I wouldn't take either of them, maybe Ulloa for £4 million max but anything more than that no way.
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 We're not other clubs. We seem to be establishing a clear transfer policy of picking bargains. Out of contract players with prem experience are great but there are few bargains to be had in this country. If that drives Pearson and Walsh abroad then fine. Their scouting team is a better judge of talent than FT's collection of FIFA obsessed children.
Vicki Vixen Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Why separate overseas strikers? We had enough experience in the Levein era to know players from the British Isles can be equally shit. Same goes for Championship / Football League strikers stepping up to Premiership level - some work out (Lambert) but most don't. Buying strikers without Premiership experience to play in the Premiership is a risk wherever they come from - but I don't see those from overseas clubs being any more risky than those from our own leagues. We can't afford to buy a proven Premiership striker so whoever we sign will have a high risk attached to them.
foxfanazer Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Connor Wickham would be perfect imo. Strong, aerial threat, good feet and still young.
Finnegan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Connor Wickham would be perfect imo. Strong, aerial threat, good feet and still young. Yet he's largely unproven (besides a few small spells) in the premiership and would not command anything like value for money.

Ricky Van Wolfswinkle £10m 1 goal Dani Osvaldo £12.8m 3 goals Andreas Cornelius £7.5m 0 goals Konstantinos Mitroglou £12m 0 goals Jozy Altidore £8.5m 1 goal (though admittedly he's played here before and been rubbish) Thats around £50m for 5 goals.
fleckneymike Posted 28 May 2014 Author Posted 28 May 2014 Michu didn't do too badly when brought in by Swansea He didn't, but as he played as a midfielder in Spain and was bought to play off the striker he's not quite the same thing.
Aus Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 He didn't, but as he played as a midfielder in Spain and was bought to play off the striker he's not quite the same thing. Ok then Ba at Newcastle a couple of years ago
Aus Fox Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 Sorry not Ba it was Cisse that came from overseas and did alright

A few I could add to that list from our own shores too. Being over-priced is not restricted to overseas players. It's widely accepted that the English (and Scottish) leagues are hugely overpriced.
fleckneymike Posted 28 May 2014 Author Posted 28 May 2014 Sorry not Ba it was Cisse that came from overseas and did alright Hi did, arrived in Jan to replace the departing Andy Carroll. He's become somewhat less prolific since then with just 2 goals last season.

Dan Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 It's not where you come from that matters though. If we find the next Bony or Remy for a fee we can afford then there's absolutely no reason they will fail.
indierich06 Posted 28 May 2014 Posted 28 May 2014 There's plenty of strikers who have come from overseas and done relatively well for mid-to-lower PL sides. Benteke, Bony, Remy, Lukaku and Papiss Cisse spring to mind. Equally there's been plenty of crap ones too, but you could say the same about a lot of British players too. At the end of the day it doesn't matter where the player comes from, it matters who's bringing them in and in Pearson and Walsh you've got a team with a great record in the transfer markets. You only have to look at Mahrez and Knockaert to see two foreign players who've been signed by them and adapted well to English football.

Lakaku is a Chelsea player and Cisse had half a season and little else since. The British players tend to do better.
