Are You Addicted To Your Smart phone?

I will not harp on about mine- CPF, James and several others has summed it up for me especially extended toilet breaks lol

However, this also created a dilemma for me- I worry if I get my phone out on holidays, Christmas etc then is that sad of me? Last Christmas was ok, I only get urges occasionally every two hours or so when there is a lull before next activity but during travelling whenever there is a wifi I would be frantically catching up on FB news despite it being utter garbage 90% of the time and other apps in evenings before bed though to be fair I might have read a lot already if I was sunbathing or using public transport for long time that day so I can't be arsed to read again that evening so phone use is more permitted. If I had a busy day sightseeing then I am happy to ditch phone for a book. I never felt the need to look at my phone when I am out partying though.

I didn't even have a phone for around a year 2-3 years ago, since had a couple of smart phones and will often spend a lot of time on it but have no problem not looking at it for a day or two if I'm busy. But definitely using it more and more as the months pass.

Yeah I can relate to the holiday thing. Without even realising it pretty much as soon as I enter a hotel lobby or a hotel room I'll be desperately trying to connect to their WiFi. Why though?! I've been to some absolutely amazing places over the last few years and yet even when surrounded by incredible sights and sounds I simply must check my bloody email or see if some random has played their turn on Scrabble. F**k's sake.

Toilet breaks I allow to be honest. Nothing like getting paid to sit on the loo and play a few games of Chess.

What's a Smart Phone? Is there any difference to a phone that you can make and receive calls apart from the cost and for the status symbol?.

Some homeless people in London are able to get a credit card swipe attachment on their smart phone to accept money from people who don't carry cash.

It goes straight Into their bank account

I've got 2 smart phones but use neither to their full capability. One is for work & the other is for personal use.

I'm not even sure what their full capability is? I don't have many apps & some of things people on here have mentioned they use theirs for, I didn't even know you could do that. I make calls, send texts, use the camera & maybe once or twice a week I'll check something on the internet. No music, no Facebook, no Twitter

I can quite happily leave my phones at home, if I'm going out with the missus or friends.

I was driving through a housing estate in Broughton Astley a couple of weeks ago as a local primary school was finishing for the day. There was a woman pushing a push chair & she had about four kids running wild all around her as she approached a junction she was going to cross. I could see the kids so took extra care as I approached the junction, when one of the kids ran straight out into the road. Fortunately for the kid I was paying attention. The mother was leaning on the back of the push chair, on her mobile, probably updating her Facebook status. Pathetic.

I read somewhere that blue is one of most eye-catching colour and it prevent you from going sleep if you have been looking at blue for some time. My phone's notification for texts and some of apps are blue-a coincidence? I think not.

I'm typing this with my left hand whilst feeding my 10 month old her bottle with my right. It's probably fair to say I might have a problem....

Here's a random one, the other night I was laying on my bed sideways with one eye on the screen for probably about half hour and the other closed, pressed into the pillow.

After getting up to go in the kitchen still with the one eye open it was so dark and gloomy even with the light on... I switched eyes and it was soo much brighter and clearer, after staying up for 20 minutes & no change in went back bed. Woke up next morning fine..

Probably not that interesting at all but it just makes me wonder what it could possibly be doing to the eyes?

I've also noticed I tend to feel fatigued a lot easier after being on it for a wee while.

As much as that was a bit of a joke, I was lying in bed reading FT on my phone when I should have been asleep.

I think it has affected my concentration, when I am watching TV I can't get through half an hour without playing with my phone, unless it is something like Game of Thrones, Sport is the worst for it, except Leicester games. You'll hear a stat or they will mention a previous match and you start thinking who was that that scored that goal back in the day. Or when Lineker mentioned Shearer kicking Lennon in the head first thing I did was post a comment about it on here, then found the video on youtube, then checked back on here to see if anyone had commented on my comment, then got distracted by other posts on here, then before I knew it it was half time.

I have also committed the cardinal sin of sitting on the sofa with the missus, TV on, neither of us watching it both looking at our phones, not talking.

I try to avoid it, but it is so distracting even when you switch off all alerts except text messages, you get a text then you see you have e-mails, facebook messages, whatsapp messages and all of a sudden you are sucked into the internet time vampire of looking at things just because you can. So much information so little time...

This.. very much this..

I like a lot of the life organising functionality that smartphone apps offer.

Ironically it's the social element of smartphones which is killing actual social interaction so I've done my bit to cut that back. In fairness I don't use Twitter at all and after being on Facebook for a number of years, I deactivated my account for lent and haven't looked back since. The absolute dross that people write on their news feed, honestly what is the point.

If you were reading your screen in the dark room before going to sleep it will put strain on your eyes. Hence why when you opened the other eye vision felt different.

It is said to be true that if you spend time on your phone directly before going to sleep your sleep can be restless and of poor quality because of the info you've just taken in. I try and not read my phone before bed time

 Staring at a bright screen just before bedtime also buggers up your sleep-wake cycle, as it suppresses melatonin release.

If anyone is having poor quality, unrefreshing sleep that could well be the reason why

Went on holiday with a mate of mine to California last year. He did the same thing...constantly trying to connect to free Wifi as soon as we were in a restaurant, cafe or hotel. it drove me nuts.

In the middle of Death valley he was almost frantic because he couldn't get a signal for 24 hrs. I told him he's got a serious problem :D

Yup, get rid!.. that kid will take up nearly all your potential internet time for years to come!

Im not sure of my level of addiction, the Mrs will say its complete, but i dont use when in public or company etc, but sitting at home im always 2 or 3 screening. For someone who said "pah!, tablets, what a marketing con" i love mine. :)
