Guest MattP Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 The monarch has no obligation to pay income tax, though the Queen has done so voluntarily since 1992. It's still only a tax on free money. So it's just like the bedroom tax then?
Rincewind Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 There is no danger of the queen falling through a safety net and ending up walking the streets though. But it did happen in the book The Queen and I by Sue Townsend where she had to live on the Braunstone estate after being kicked out her home.

No chance Ken, look how hard the Queen works, always people who will help her out and offer a hand if she ever did need it. Hundreds of engagements still a year and she's 88 years old, what an incredible achievement, no interest in a dodgy loophole at 58 for her to retire and booze the day away. She'll be working until she drops. She'll live a long time though with that ethic. God Save the Queen.
Guest MattP Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Yep, distractions from good news stories are a shame. Thankfully, Conservative Home is here to keep us informed: http://www.conservativehome.com/platform/2014/09/lord-ashcroft-labours-lead-climbs-to-seven-points-in-my-latest-ashcroft-national-poll.html First Kate will be in labour, then the whole country will be in Labour! Let's have a double bank holiday! If Miliband and Balls get the reigns I think most of us will be getting a permanent 'bank holiday'

Old King Richard would probably approve" At least Ken doesn't usually start necking his ale until at least lunchtime, whereas Good Queen Bess is on it for her elevenses! Gawd Bless Yer, Ma'am!
Guest MattP Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Behave he was being carried down the Goose steps at 12.15 the other week! Good on Ma'am! I've got even more respect for her now she's on the anti-fogmatics.

I'm late already. TBF I buy the 50p jar of coffee 60p steak pie £1 Iceland ready meals. Bargain near date end items which saves me enough for a couple of pints extra a week.
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 I don't know the answers, and I'm indifferent to the extent that the economics do matter. I think greater transparency of royal finances is a reasonable request, but it does seem rather vindictive and almost perverse to focus on this when there are so many other much more serious problems in the world. How often do you hear people talk about the monarchy on this forum? Lets be honest, it's a pretty rare event. If the current level of discussion constitutes 'focusing' on the monarchy then I can only think you want people to stop talking about it altogether. Any less debate on the subject and it'd be virtually ignored. What the republicans on this forum do is to state their views whenever the issue comes up as it has now. They don't derail threads to push the topic that they want to talk about as some have done.
Chug Laguna Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 I'm American and think the concept of a monarchy is a little batty but relatively harmless when its applied the way that you guys have it... As far as tourism, wouldn't matter to me one way or the other, but when I do go to the UK (or Canada, when she's there), I do tour the royal-related things and the fam gets all giddy over standing around to catch a glimpse of her. Mind you I'd be royally pissed if my tax money here in the States were used to prop up some conservative old broad and her accustomed lifestyle

bovril Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 'Royal Baby #2' sounds like some low-budget action-comedy starring Jon Voight.
Chug Laguna Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 How much does it cost to have a Presidency? Worth every penny for the catharsis
Guest MattP Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 How much does it cost to have a Presidency? It cost a nation's dignity under George Bush.
Buce Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 So it's just like the bedroom tax then? Yeah, kind of. Except that she doesn't have to make up the shortfall by choosing between eating and heating. But I guess she needs the space to entertain her guests/friends/family etc. Sound familiar? Despite my republican leanings, I accept that the queen still puts in a shift, but what of her brood? What do Charles and Anne and the lackwit, whose name I can never remember, do to earn their wedge?
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Yeah, kind of. Except that she doesn't have to make up the shortfall by choosing between eating and heating. Only see him standing next to Lizzie, like her bodyguard or something.
Buce Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 You talking about that one who looks a bit like The Emperor? Only see him standing next to Lizzie, like her bodyguard or something. Bodyguard? I'm talking about the one who cried and quit after two weeks training as a marine. The sensitive one. I've no idea who the 'Emperor' is.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Royal Baby 2 : This time, it's for REVENGE

What do Charles and Anne and the lackwit, whose name I can never remember, do to earn their wedge? Let's not get onto Prince Charles, I could write a paragraph on him that would probably get me arrested, even a monarchist like me would quietly be wincing if that dhimmi ever took the reigns of this great land. We agree on one thing mind, we could shift a few of them off to earn their own keep.
cambridgefox Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 You talking about that one who looks a bit like The Emperor? Only see him standing next to Lizzie, like her bodyguard or something.Charles and Anne especially work hard.Air miles Andrew and Edward I'm not sure.
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Bodyguard? I'm talking about the one who cried and quit after two weeks training as a marine. The sensitive one. I've no idea who the 'Emperor' is. The one off Star Wars. His facial features are amusingly similar to the chap I'm thinking of. Anyway my mistake. It's just that your description of the guy could've been applied to a lot of them.
Harry - LCFC Posted 9 September 2014 Posted 9 September 2014 Charles and Anne especially work hard.Air miles Andrew and Edward I'm not sure. Last three names all mean nothing to me. But yes well done to them for taking all those holidays. How ungrateful of me not to thank them for it.
Parafox Posted 12 September 2014 Posted 12 September 2014 Seems Harry could barely wait for the stitches to come out before climbing abourd the royal beaver again. I bet Nicholas Witchell has his head in his hands right now mumbling "Oh no, no, no... not again, please God, I can't do another 8 months of pointless coverage of another royal sprog. Abort. abort..."
