Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 22 September 2014 Posted 22 September 2014 I feel as though this is worthy of opening a thread on rather than sticking it all in the golf thread. What are people's early thoughts? I think it's going to be a lot closer than some are predicting as Europe have a fair few big players who are currently out of form (Westwood, Poulter) and coupling this with our 3 rookies I think we may not win so comfortably as predicted. If I had to stick my neck out I would probably go 15-13 Europe, with the it coming down to the final few singles on Sunday. Can see Sergio performing very well for us, and both Mickleson and Furyk being the US key men.
ScouseFox Posted 22 September 2014 Posted 22 September 2014 Think we should win. Always love the Ryder cup. Got Friday off work so will be right involved then. Bagged Sunday afternoon and off too Wanted to ask our golf experts a betting question. I enjoy watching golf but wouldn't be able to seek out the value betting wise, but saw in the specials section top European wildcard betting. Poults was even money in that category. I watch the majors, the Ryder cup and very few other tourneys if they're on the tele at decent hours, but Ryder cup heroics alone would surely make poulter a great bet here? No? Talk to me flair, donut etc.

But it is a big gamble, as his game just hasn't been there in the last 6 months and he hasn't been able to put a few holes together let alone a few rounds. He will likely play atleast 3/4 times though where as Gallagher will realistically only play twice, 3 max. Westwood again has been very patchy but I think he will be paired with Sergio a lot who could carry him along with his energy. My main bets for the Ryder Cup will be Garcia Top European Point scorer. Mickleson Top USA Point Scorer Furyk Top USA Point Scorer (E/W) Bradley Top USA Wildcard Spieth Top Rookie.
Ric Flair Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 I think USA might sneak this, do not underestimate the fact that anything Tom Watson touches turns to gold. On paper this looks the strongest case for a Europe win for a while but we've won several times in the last 15 years when we should by rights have been hammered. That said, our crowd will be in great voice and I like Paul McGinley. He's a shrewd man and I think he'll react as the games go on and make key decisions that could turn the cup on it's head. I was a big golf gambler until I stopped betting all together last summer, but there's little value in the Ryder Cup unless you're willing to bet big on shorter odds. I think Henrik Stenson and Rickie Fowler will be the warriors this year.
foxfanazer Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 Really looking forward to just chilling out and watching this although the in laws are coming from Norfolk to see us Sunday Fancy Fowler to have a massive tournament and Garcia for us

Watson knows how to win in Scotland, no doubt, but I still don't think we've got enough to win outright on your turf, with the team you have. I'm content to bet small amounts conservatively so I won't be fussed if the Ryder Cup cannot win me a fortune. But when I saw Europe's odds at -110 a few months ago, I stuck a fiver on that before you could say José María Olazábal. The Ryder Cup is really the only golf I get excited about, much less actually make an effort to watch, so I won't mind missing out on my $5 bet if it means we beat you bastards!
Steven Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 Alex Ferguson to do the European team "motivational" speech. I think I would ask to be excused at that point.
Chug Laguna Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 I have no faith we will win this one so chances are USA in a blowout
Grandad. Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 Rickie Fowler to be the star of the show. USA to win in a thriller. Rory to flop. Hope I am wrong in all of them predictions.
Donut Posted 23 September 2014 Posted 23 September 2014 16-12 to Europe for me. Watsons wildcards look in poor form. If you take Mahan's Barclays win away, between them theyve done nothing. But I would agree with Ric, i wouldnt underestimate this USA team one bit. I think the notion of "rookie" players can be misunderstood too. Sure, Jimmy Walker might be a "rookie". But this guy has been around the PGA Tour a long time, hes seen it, done it and worn the T shirt in majors, and won big golf tournaments. He will handle the Ryder Cup just fine thankyou. Where traditionally Europe have had the success on fridays and saturdays, that changed at Medinah and the USA have some pairings that work very well in the foursome/fourball section. Kuchar & Spieth looks like a natural pairing that id expect to see, Mickelson & Bradley might play all 5, and Watson & Simpson is a very probably pairing. For Europe, I think youll really see the continental Europeans rise to the occasion. Sergio and Rory would be an excellent fourball pairing in my opinion, but there are a few interesting players in there. Bjorn has been out of the Ryder Cup scene as a player for a long time, and im not sure where you fit Dubuisson in. But i suspect all 12 players from each side will be involved friday. As for Ryder Cup betting, I personally wouldnt bother. Perhaps look at the singles on sunday if one woefully out of form player happens to be drawn with a player from the opposing side who has brought his A game for the previous couple of days, but matchplay is a strange game. There may be value if youre looking at a top wildcard that you would expect to play all 5, but even then, youre relying on his foursomes partner also playing well to bag the point (because hes not playing his own ball all the time in that format). Windy conditions are predicted on friday too, that will cause havoc in foursome play.
Ross-Kemp Posted 24 September 2014 Posted 24 September 2014 The sun are doing a prediction league for this. Any sun+ members get involved. 15 1/2 v 12 1/2 to Europe for me.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 7/4 on the US must be a shade too big.
ScouseFox Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 could be worth backing the tie @ 14s on betfair and if it's as close as everyone thinks it will be cash out at something lower half way through sunday.
ScouseFox Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 pairings for tomorrow morning sorted. Match One: Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson (US) against Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson (Eur) Match Two: Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker (US) against Thomas Bjorn and Martin Kaymer (Eur) Match Three: Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed (US) against Stephen Gallacher and Ian Poulter (Eur) Match four: Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley (US) against Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy (Eur) Dat last match
Narborough_fox Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley (US) against Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy (Eur). What a match.
ScouseFox Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 god this is gonna be so good. poulter when the pairings got announced was great. just stood up, put his arm in the arm and looked at gallacher as if to say "yeah we got this i'm the fúcking don". also only that last pair was predicted by anyone for europe. few surprises but they all look quality. usa going with an all rookie pair up against poults and a home boy in match 3 too. gotta get into them.
foxfanazer Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 Sergio and Rory is a great pairing although I would've liked to have seen Poulter and Garcia personally
kingfox Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 Cannot wait, the last Ryder Cup is up there with one of the best things I've ever watched. And that's coming from a guy, who never really liked Golf until about five years ago. Shame I'll be working with a bunch of kids, one of which is Chinese and shouts wee wee wee all the time.
Hirsty The Blue 94 Posted 25 September 2014 Author Posted 25 September 2014 Surprised Gmac isn't playing first up. Guaranteed to be playing with Dubuisson in the Foursomes later in the afternoon. Can see it being 3-1 Europe after the morning, with Fowler & Walker bringing the Americans their only point. What a match up in game 4 by the way.
HowardsBulletHeader Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 McIlroy & Garcia is a colossal pairing, arguably our two form players too. Garcia with his summer of 2nds and Rory well we know about him. I really thought Dubuisson might have been with Stenson, both long hitters and VD has got a sneaky good short game. In particular, in four balls would have been a good shout IMO. Surprised by our pairings and not surprised by Watson chucking rookies at it early doors. Just can't wait for it all to start now!
Grandad. Posted 25 September 2014 Posted 25 September 2014 Match 4. Rory and Sergio v Dickhead and Sir Phil. Wow.
Leicester Lass Posted 26 September 2014 Posted 26 September 2014 That opening tee shot from Webb Simpson
Ric Flair Posted 26 September 2014 Posted 26 September 2014 That opening tee shot from Webb Simpson Hahahahaaa he nearly hit himself in the chin!!!!!!! It looks like i'm off to Gleneagles tomorrow, cannot believe it. Means i've got to set off about 1am to get there though, need to get some kip in today then.
