Nowadays, almost certainly Lineker. One of the most well known people in football (if not sport in general) full stop, and he makes no attempt to hide the fact that he supports Leicester and was a former player. 

 

 

Banks has got to be a very close second though, surely? Shilton also.

Easily say Lineker though. Even people without an interest in football know who Gary is!

Everyone says linekar but people now just know him for Walker's Crisps and as a host and not so many people think of him as such a legend.

But if we were talking within the last 20 years I'd go with Cambiasso, never thought it would ever happen.. especially after Beckham was apparently certain to join City a few years back.

Surely LIneker still gets fairly sizeable international recognition though? Being a Golden Boot winner and all that, as well as playing for Barcelona / Grampus Eight.

Lineker. Surely... He said himself the move to Barcelona made him a name. Added to the fact he's got a Golden Boot. There won't be many people, even the non football fans, who don't known him.

As the OP has not stated this country alone I would go with Cambiasso over Lineker.

 

Reason Lineker is known here and Spain mainly.

Cambiasso Argentina Spain Italy and now here would also think he is very well known throughout south America.

 

Also the fact Cambiasso is current people in there 20's in other countries won't have a clue who Lineker is.
