Well done Harry Panayiatou

Scores for his national team St Kitts and Nevis. Not exactly sure if it was his debut though, like when he scored in the last minute at Elland Rd a few seasons back.

Upsets me that people who were born here and have lived here all their life identify more with another country. Think his Dad's English as well.

Identify more with, or appreciate they have a rather higher chance of playing international football with?

I think there's a good chance he identifies more with that country. Lets be honest, there's isn't going to be a lot of glory playing for such a small country so you probably need to feel a pretty strong connection to want to play for them.

Agree with the point, but this will have been a footballing decision I imagine, he clearly has no chance of ever playing for England so may as well take up this, gets you out the cold for a few days as well and you get paid for it.

Would imagine he has some Greek/Cypriot in him looking at the surname as well.

What an idiotic comment to make...

Would you like to explain why?

a) Playing for a lesser-known team when you don't come from a big-name academy to begin with is a footballing decision. Truth is Panayiotou will most likely never have a chance to play regularly with England, so why not play on a regular basis for a country with which he has a connection?

b) In my opinion, even if it wasn't a footballing decision, he has the right to choose what country he identifies with most (as long it isn't based on xenophobia)

c) His dad's Cypriot as you can tell from the surname. His mom is from K&N.

Great stuff, pleased for the lad just as i am for a young local Newquay lad Jake Gosling who is eligible to play for Gibraltar, he scored their first ever goal as a EUFA country, now playing in Qualifiers against Germany, Poland, Ireland, Scotland etc.....

So really there was nothing much wrong with what I said. If it's a footballing decision, fine. If it wasn't then I'm a little disappointed he doesn't feel England is his country.

It's probably lovely and warm there though.

You could say a lot of players now and in the past took a back door into International football and it didn't do them any harm Andy King born in Barnstaple, Matt Elliott played for Scotland even Muzzy Izzett  couldn't get in the England team so went and played for Turkey. I remember an interview with him after he was picked for Turkey when he came out with a statement 'The only time I have ever been to Turkey is on hoilday'.

My step Dad knows his Dad.

They used to train Aylestone Park when Harry played for them in his younger days. His Dad's nickname was Andy The Greek so surely he's Greek.

Very interesting mate but as a long shot, do you know if he has a relative called Hayley (?) - think that was her name - as I think she is from Newquay and I did a PGCE with her about ten years ago??

He probably does feel that England is his country but he'd like to further his career by playing international football even if it is for a poor side.
