Obviously outwitting the likes of Redknapp isn't too difficult but to do so well against the rest was very impressive. Yet, this season we both seem to have managers who are stuck in their ways. It's almost like rabbits caught in the headlights. Even though I thought we would really struggle I did think we would have got a few more points by not. Similarly, I thought Leicester would be higher up. When Nugent played for us in the Prem he looked ok, but the feeling is the league had become a lot better in the last few seasons with far fewer weaker teams.

No, Pearson had the measure of every club in the division. Dyche had the measure of 22 clubs in the division. Why are Burnley fans so desperate to compare themselves to us at every opportunity?

We scoffed at some of the journeyman signings other teams have made but our promising young players have not stepped up as we perhaps thought they would. In terms of experience, we have a crocked 35 year old centre half, a 33 year old liability of a left-back and a Serie A escapee. Delusions of grandeur, anyone?

He bought a new striker, a new winger, the most decorated Argentine footballer in history and strengthened the goalkeeping position. We showed no fear in our first 5 games and then got beaten by Palace in a game in which we got our tactics totally wrong. At that point it looks like he lost his bottle. We were 2-1 up at half time against a Burnley side missing 4 of their 5 best players and chucked the game away by retreating from about the hour mark. Even then Burnley didn't create a proper chance and scored a decent free kick late on to leave with a point. A side with no wins, barely capable of scoring and with a load of injuries is the definition of "there for the taking" and we played defensively, giving them way, way too much respect given the guys they had on the field (that's not a go at Burnley at all, any team would struggle missing 4 of arguably their 5 best players). We then went away to a Newcastle side without a win all season and played for a 0-0, using an untested 4-5-1 formation. And lost. We then went to Swansea (winless in 5) playing a 4th formation in 4 games and seemed incapable of passing the ball. Ultimately Swansea were way too good for us and I think even if we'd been "on it" we'd have done well to get a point. Yesterday again we had a 4th formation in 4 games. We were playing to clog up the centre of the pitch and, effectively, our strategy was not to concede. At home to a team which finished in the bottom six last season. If we've got aspirations of staying up we've got to look at home games against the likes of West Brom as games we need to setting up to score more goals than them. Yesterday's team selection suggested that Pearson was hoping that we'd keep it tight and get the rub of the green to get a 1-0 win. In the end it went the other way, but the point is that effectively we're allowing these games to be decided by chance by not being positive in our approach. If anything Pearson has totally forgotten the quality we showed in getting up last season. Yes, the Premier League is not the same as the championship, but history tells you that getting over 100 points in the Championship means you've got more than enough to be competing a level up. At the moment we're not trying to compete, we're trying to exist, and it's not good enough. As far as I'm concerned Pearson has as long as he needs. He will sort it out but he needs a good slap across the chops, some strong coffee and a copy of last season's DVD.

Maybe too much football manager? Our options were giving Nugent a contact or paying £12M + salary for the likes of Troy Deeney or McGoldrick, neither guaranteed to succeed for us.

Mackay to Burnley and Pulis to us. Its the only way either team will survive.

The Doctor Posted 2 November 2014 Posted 2 November 2014 Underestimated the premier league in the sense of the quality of player required (Nugent) to perform to a decent standard and not show too much loyalty to the players that got us here (Nugent). If anything I think he's overestimating the quality of the premiership and trying too hard to contain other teams than just play our game. We showed in the first 5 games if we play our game rather than trying to combat the opposition then we can do it with the best of them in this division, but we've retreated back into a contain the opposition and hope for a break.
