Trelleh Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 Most can agree it's been a poor season so far; I'll be one of the first to admit. But let's not get all pessimistic for gods sake. Nigel is a good manager and has got us to where we dared to dream of a few seasons ago from practically nothing. He came back and totally transformed our team from the mess that Sven left. I have no doubt if given the chance, he will sort it out. If you make a mistake, surely you should be at least given the chance to rectify it? Give him a chance to amend in January and let's see from there. He hasn't bought in a load of pre-madonnas like Adams did 10 years ago, he has done the best possible thing and get in some young, hungry players. We have a very good foundation at the club and people don't recognise this. If you thought we wern't going to struggle pre-season, you need a good reality check. It's was never going to be easy and we need to get used to the fact that we will be right in the dogfight. Onwards and only upwards, In Nigel we trust.
ScouseFox Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 before nige's return we were amongst the favourites to be promoted to the prem, by the time this season's over we'll probably be in the exact same position. the circle of life.

Seems so, but then we will know what the Prem is all about and if we get back up, we can use this season as experience. Let's not forget it's been a while since we were last here, right now it's unfamiliar territory.
Stevosevic Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 Enjoyed the Micky Adams premier league season more than this.

Give Nige a chance, but we should not trust in him unconditionally. Especiailly with some of his more than questionable tactical decision. Substitutions today for example - no idea what that was about. He needs to learn to pick the best team and stick with it. Sack off zonal marking, Stop giving Nugent match time, stop blaming our most creative player for losing, stop saying sh*t like 'I thought the back 4 were good today' when even Paul Ince says they are a disgrace, Stop saying week in week out 'we should have won' 'we were unlucky' or some such other nonsense.
Number 6 Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 That was a better side than this IMO. Priceless.

We were amongst the favourites to be promoted, but that is NOT where we were. We were a mid-table Championship side with an expensively assembled bang average Championship team when Nigel took over. We were favourites only because we spent lots of money, and we spent most of it on absolute shite.
Guest Col city fan Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 I'm not wumming. I think that team had some decent players and much more spirit than this side. I guess time will tell.
dayday Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 We are all over the place, the quicker people realise this the better. I'm not worried,I'm very worried, forget loyalty.. We are in the shit, something has to happen now . The board have to make the choice back him or sack him now.,leave it any longer then the uncertainty will linger
Mark_w Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 The board have to make the choice back him or sack him now.,leave it any longer then the uncertainty will linger Isn't doing and saying nothing publicly, basically backing him?
Mark Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 I'm not wumming. I think that team had some decent players and much more spirit than this side. I guess time will tell. Time will tell? We were deservedly relegated and that squad offered no value whatsoever due to their age. It set us back years.

MC Prussian Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 How many points were we relegated with? 33. And some of the results were a joke, the amount of goals we conceded laughable.

We were favourites only because we spent lots of money, and we spent most of it on absolute shite. I was never a big fan of Sven, but he also bought Schmeichel, Konchesky and Nugent, all of which were on the field today. If you add them to Moore, Schlupp and King, who weren't signed by Pearson either and were at the club back then (not to mention Pearson Mark One signings like Dyer), then you still have the backbone of a promotion winning team. If we got relegated this year, I wouldn't want to guarantee that we'd be much better off than that. On the other hand, there's unlikely to be a summer 2004-esque overhaul of the squad either. But if we've learnt one thing, it should be that a quick return to the Premier League is no easy thing.
Soar Fox Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 Walker or Schmeichel... Walker Thatcher or Konchesky.... Thatcher De Laet or Sinclair... Not much in it Curtis or Morgan... Morgan Elliott or Wailsweski/Moore... Elliott Scowcroft or Mahrez.... Mahrez Izzet or James... Izzet Nalis or Cambiasso... Cambiasso Ferdinand or Ulloa... Ferdinand Dickov or Vardy... Not much in it but Dickov was a better finisher

Not much in it but Dickov was a better finisher Yes, I think Dickov would nick that one. At least based on what we've seen so far. But remember that Elliott was a shadow of his former self that season, and I think he ended up on loan in the second tier. It's interesting the number of players who don't feature in your comparison too - Bent, for instance, who might well have edged some members of our current squad. There's not much in it. But Mark is right that the age of that squad and the lengths of their contracts (mostly on one year deals, or get-out clauses) played a massive part in our slump over the years that followed. I think the current squad would give us more to build on were we to be relegated.
MC Prussian Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 The 4-4 vs Spurs was a classic though. As were the 3-3 against Middlesboro or the now infamous 3-4 against Wolves... At least teams banged in even more goals against Leeds and Wolverhampton, but that was about as positive as the season was overall.
dayday Posted 29 November 2014 Posted 29 November 2014 Isn't doing and saying nothing publicly, basically backing him? I don't think so,The Thais were there today, they sacked Sven ,and I think they will sack Nigel. Nigel got us up ,but these guys long term want somebody with a big name . I think owners are willing to splash the cash, yet I don't think Nigel has ever had that option. Time will tell ,but my gut feeling is,no win against Liverpool, his job will be gone,

If I remember correctly Elliott went on loan in the 04/05 season. Yeah the age of the squad was a hindrance and I think it was the recruitment policy when we got relegated is what set us back.

Or did he retire in 04/05? I agree regarding the recruitment in summer 04, though we did bring in some younger players (Williams, Gudjonsson, Connolly). But the whole squad was in need of such an injection of youth that, while Adams should have given it and didn't, we would have struggled severely whatever he did.
