ozleicester Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 They just moved us another minute closer to annihilation.. nervous? http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-01-23/doomsday-clock-moved-closer-to-midnight/6040208 Its pretty much as close as its ever been (2 minutes during the height of the cold war/nuclear testing) and it doesnt seem to be a cause for concern, or if it is, that concern does not appear to lead to change? Iron Maiden can tell you all about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPbqQOf41Qc
leicsmac Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 I'm not actually sure what threat warrants moving the clock this close to midnight. From what I can tell all of the deadly threats around the world seem to be local these days, rather than global. MAD, while still a possibility, seems to be an anachronism in a time of reasonably rational nation-states. Ukraine is an issue but there's no way that will escalate. I can't see what's really changed since the last time it was adjusted unless you count the threat of global climate change becoming a vastly more imminent threat.
Jaspa Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 Ive been listening to too much Rap recently, first thing I thought of Jus thought I'd say
cambridgefox Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 They sound a cheery lot! And to think people get paid for this shite.
AndWhat? Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 The doomsday clock actually exists!?!? I thought it was just from The Watchmen!
leicsmac Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 They sound a cheery lot! And to think people get paid for this shite. They've been watching the state of the world since the Cold War began. They're not as relevant as they were then because the world changes so quickly these days, but I think nuclear scientists that come up with this should command a little more respect, ne? The doomsday clock actually exists!?!? I thought it was just from The Watchmen! Where do you think the writer got the idea from?
AndWhat? Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 because nothing ever written has ever been made up lol
Jon the Hat Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 What a load of guff. I can buy climate change could make the world harder to live in, but I don't believe for a second it could wipe out the human race. I also don't see why modernizing nuclear weaponry should make anything more likely to kill us.
leicsmac Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 because nothing ever written has ever been made up lol True. You wonder who came up with the idea of a massive fvckoff clock telling you how close it is to the end of the world anyway. But it wasn't Alan Moore. What a load of guff. I can buy climate change could make the world harder to live in, but I don't believe for a second it could wipe out the human race. I also don't see why modernizing nuclear weaponry should make anything more likely to kill us. That was the point I made earlier, along with thinking that such a situation hasn't changed drastically enough to warrant shifting the clock forward.
MooseBreath Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 What a load of rubbish. Should have moved it back quarter of an hour. The world has surely never been in a better position to tackle any threats of that kind.

Knocking a wall down in Germany moved it back,I know you will say it symbolises the end of the Cold War but did it make that much of a difference in the whole context of our planet for everyone to relax and say"don't worry everyone is friends again we will live longer"what about the overdue volcano In Yellowstone park that people go on about.Should we be more worried about that ( I dont) I know yogi bear shit himself when he heard.

Totally agree here. I've been saying all along that sooner rather than later there is going to be a problem that requires all of humanity to act together or all of civilisation is going to come crashing down...Yellowstone is just one of the possibilites. I however have next to no faith in human nature to do so. But there doesn't seem to be much in the way of immediate threat right now.
Carl the Llama Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 I hope Dr Manhattan doesn't show up with his giant blue dangly bits.

I'm not sure that there's much the civilised world can do if Yellowstone erupts? Also, I do think we'll see the war in the Ukraine escalate in the spring time.
psychonaut Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 Fcuk it roll on midnight. Lets all walk hand in hand and celebrate our extinction the suffering has gone on long enough.
Mike Oxlong Posted 23 January 2015 Posted 23 January 2015 Good news! This means we might not get relegated

Also, I do think we'll see the war in the Ukraine escalate in the spring time. Right. As there is nothing we can do once this current interglacial period ends, either. But if we act as one species rather than just as a vague collection of nation states all with their own self interest, we might be able to keep civilisation just about running in both circumstances.
