Muslims in Britain today - some facts and figures

The most surprising thing I've read in this thread is that there were once Italians in Highfields.

I think that Muslim populations have a negative impact on ethnic diversity because many Sikhs, Hindus and other europeans simply don't want to live near them. The most overt anti-muslim rhetoric I've heard in Leicester was from a polish man.

I trust you Webbo to do the right thing.

Well at least I know who deleted my horrible bastards post!

...and the people of Copenhagen can sleep peacefully in their beds tonight!

I was in Morrisons this morning and there was a Muslim couple buying some Frazzles.

Makes you think, doesn't it?

How do you know they were Muslim? Serious question.

Well he was wearing the same traditional clothes as most of the dudes that come out of the mosque near where I work and the woman was completely covered in dark robes, had a headscarf on and only her face wasn't covered.

It's easy when they wear the outfits

No I don't. It was an honest reply to Merging Cultures about an upbringing. If we can't handle a post like that then GC will die very quickly.

Any other ethnic group and no one would bat an eyelid.

Sorry I missed it.

He said something along the lines of Muslims coming into an area and it going down hill? It's a shame he felt that way. As we all know, correlation does not equal causation.

I went into a long reply saying that people do bat an eyelid about other ethnic, economic, race, religious etc groups. But this will do :)

So that's what he said? I can't let that go unchallenged: as I've mentioned before, I lived in Highfields in the early eighties when virtually every street corner had a prostitute standing on it, and nearly every street had its drug dealer; it was a typical red-light district - seedy and dangerous.

When the muslims moved in, they took action against these problems, and made Highfields a better place to live.

The area is still run-down, and I certainly wouldn't want to live there, but that is down to the social deprivation, not because it has become a muslim area.

I am not sure. I was just guessing from his other posts and what others have said. I did include a question mark to indicate I wasn't sure. ;)

It seems like a pretty good guess, though Webbo wouldn't have deleted a post just for that - it was probably phrased in an extremely offensive way.

Anyway, my point remains: regardless of one's opinion of Islam or muslims, Highfields is a better place for them being there.

Don't talk nonsense.

It was once a wonderful place to live. The finest example of multiculuralism you could wish to find. It's now just another muslim ghettto.

Just look at the positive impact the hindu population that once lived in the highfields have had on Leicester.

They got on with life and integrated into "our" society. Their children did well at school and they gradually migrated across the city to places like Evington and Rushey Mead they got out of social housing and their children went to university. I just don't see this happening amongst the Muslim population.

The highfields was supposed to be a stepping stone to greater things but they moved in 30 odd years ago and they are still there clogging up much needed social housing for the next generation of immigrants.

So because YOU don't see Muslims going to university, it means they're not?

To call Highfields a Muslim ghetto would be very wide of the mark I'm afraid.

You seem to have a big chip on your shoulder regarding this? Why so angry bro?

I went to school in the fifties, and the very early sixties, and never saw a non white pupil, and religion was not a very big issue at all.

I went to school in the 90s and early 00s and never saw a non-white pupil.

Did you go to Eton?

Are you saying your school was 100% white?

In the Fens. There might have been 1 or 2 non-white students thinking back. And only 2-3 second names.

A good friend of mine is a muslim and eats pork.

I asked him about it once and he said, 'Geezer, if there is a heaven and they dont let me in for eating a ****ing sausage, it aint my kind of party'.

He also once died his goatee blonde and insisted on being called Bollywood Hogan.
