Almost half of people are unaware that England's smoking ban will come into force on 1 July, according to a poll.

But the survey of 1,700 people, carried out for the Department of Health, found over 90% did know a ban was coming in.

Time to celebrate? Must admit, breathing someone elses smoke pisses me off - but breathing in their odour or flatulence pisses me off far more. I'm not so happy about just banning things that piss me off though; if that was the criteria then I would start with footballers feigning injury, the Disney empire and laptop batteries going flat.

If it means people give up then I guess it can't be a bad thing.

I'm very happy with the smoking ban, of the others I'd really like to see pesticides outlawed, I eat quite a fair amount of fruit and I have to prepare myself into believing it's not covered in this shite, I don't even trust most of the so called organic produced to be clean, I just view that as a money making machine.

How they are even allowed to serve this up in these days of over protective H&S/risk assessment I've no idea, I guess it's down to political lobbying by big conglomerates.

People wont give it up. Apart from bars, clubs and the odd cafe most public indoor places are smoke free anyway, so it really only affects the people who go out drinking regular, but then they'll just go outside for one, dragging their non-smoking mates with them.

Who voted Malted Milk biscuits?

Come on, be honest.

It's a victory for common sense.

They come over here sponging off our State benefits, getting drunk all the time, starting fights and shagging our women. It's no wonder that people attack them.

Anyway - what kind of student are you? Nine in the morning on a Sunday and you're up and about? You shame students everywhere Kokopops.

Shame them.

I'm pleased. In either the Leicester Drinker or one my monthly beer mags from CAMRA theres a survey of the different kind of drinkers and their opinions. The biggest group that smoke are lager drinkers who also object the most. The smallest are wine drinkers.

I'll try and find it but the article might be on the web site. :dunno:

Pub onibus surver conducted by TNS on behalf of CAMRA on 1500 adults in England and Wales.

Table 1 percentage of people who said they would be more likely to visit a pub or that theier number of pubs would not be affected.

Real ale drtinkers 93%

Keg bitter drinkers 89%

Wine drinkers 89%

Soft drink drinkers 88%

Spirit drinkers 86%

Lager drinkers 84 %

Alcopop drinkers 81%

Table 2 Percentage of people who smoke.

Lager drinkers 43%

Alcopop drinkers 42%

Spirit drinkers 37%

Keg bitter drinkers 35%

Real ale drinkers 25%

Soft drink drinkers 24%

Wine drinkers 20%

So we'll see more wooly jumpers in pubs and less lager louts.

Strange more people want chavs banned than nuclear weapons.. I've just thought of a use for nuclear weapons.

Not bothered about smokers. I dont myself but have grown up been surrounding by smokers and I would guess that 8 out of every 10 of my mates spoke weed from time to time. You wont get them stopping there habits lol

I have voted for guns but it will never happen and we are fast-tracking to being a mini USA on the gun issues. I also predict that all cops will have guns in the UK within a decade because the gangsters have so much advantage wielding there guns about.

i think they should just keep it as it is with smoking areas. you find pubs around the world but you don't find pubs like ours in other country's there unique to england and i think with all these rules coming out we are starting to loose our heritage.

Why anyone would want to smoke i dont know, at least now when i go out i dont go home stinking of smoke.

Good news

The same reason why people drink, take drugs, eat junk food etc etc, because they enjoy it ?. :dunno:

...don't forget "And listen to heavy metal!"

There should be a law against it but there isn't and people do it.

You may think it looks cool kids - but it's not...and one day you'll find out the hard way.

i've never been a smoker but i'm dead against the ban. i against the nanny state and banning everything that's bad for you, grown ups should be allowed to make their own decisions. if an individual landlord decides to ban it in his pub fair enough, if we had non-smoking pubs and smoking pubs people could make up their own minds, as there are very few non-smoking pubs it shows there isn't much demand.

PS on the radio the other day it said that since the ban in scotland came in, pub turnovers have gone down 11% but cigarette sales have gone up 6%.

If having a bonfire can constitute a private nuisance, actionable in a court of law, and with the payment of damages, why shouldn't cigarette smoke?
