Night shifts

Recommended Posts

I have a job where I have to do the occasional night shifts and to be honest I'm finding it really tough to readjust myself ready to go back to day shifts. Just found myself falling asleep at 3 o'clock this afternoon and I get really irritable when my sleeping pattern changes.

Just wondered if anyone else experiences this and if you have any ways of dealing with it.

I quit my job and took a pay cut to get off shifts as they were killing me.

When I used yo finish night though I'd get up early is up at 10/11am if I finished work at 6am and try and do things to keep busy, then you should fall asleep about 9-10 but DON'T have a nap in the afternoon.

If your mid nights shifts then nothing try blacked out curtains, ear plugs no coffee/tea 3-4 hours before you finish work.

If you get up early and can't fall asleep don't fight it,get up do what you GOTO d o then try and have a nap later as few hours before you go work

Get black out blinds in your bedroom, they work a treat

Fortunately I am able to sleep whenever to be honest, maybe that is something that will change as I get older.

Yeah I think I need to take more precautions like you suggested cos it's really affecting my mood and eating especially. Before I've just tried to plough through on 3 or 4 hours sleep cos that's all I can usually manage during the day.

They would probably help, now it's getting lighter and warmer I'm finding it even harder to sleep during the daytime than during winter

i think from the sounds of it you have to do a day where your mood is going to be affected and just go as long as possible with no sleep to try and smash your body clock back into tick.

That was my thinking as well, so yesterday I barely slept at all but then still couldn't fall asleep last night which is probably why I fell asleep this afternoon!

Until last month i was always doing night shift, usually three in a week but did five in a row once.

Sometimes didnt mind them but i look back and think its definitely best not to do them.

I'd start ar 2300 and finish at 0800, would sleep until 16/1700 from around 1000. Would usually go home straight to bed and watch stuff on my tablet until i felt myself nodding off

Funnily enough I'm off to do a run of 4 starting this evening. They roll around every 6-8 weeks for me I guess, sometimes a run of 3 sometimes a run of 4.

I also have shifts that start at 04:30 which sometimes come off the back of nights (after my days off) so you can imagine what swapping into that is like. Basically as Raj says, after your final one just get a few hours sleep and try to have a normal day and then an early night, you'll be exhausted anyway if you haven't had that nap.

Nights at our place are a lot less stressful than days though, no management around, only a small and pretty laid back team of about 5/6 so it tends to fly by.

I have to work 3 shifts 06.00-14.00, 14.00-22.00, 22.00-06.00.

Out of all them nights are my favourite and I even asked to be put on permanent nights. It's the best sleep I get, normally a solid 8/9 hours a day. In the summer it can be a bit of a struggle, due to being light when you get in bed and the heat.

I have worked nights for about 4 years now, hardly any stress due to all of management being on days and I've never really had a problem getting the sleep I need.

Very underrated in my opinion.

Energy drinks, sorted.

Do NOT take this advice its the one WORST thing you can do.

What kind of stuff to people do working nights?

I'd guess a lot of security work but then people in security don't really have managers or "big bosses that aren't in"

Hmm maybe factory work

I work in a residential care home for mental health, ASD and learning disabilities.

My night shifts are either 1800-0800 or 2200-0800....... I will never ever rely on energy drinks, absolutely disgusting stuff
