separator Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 When I do nights I do about 4 hours actual work and get paid for 8 , one of the benefits of working on the tube and only being able to work when the trains have stopped running.
lavrentis Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 You come and get me, 2 can play this game x i never leave the borders of zone 2
Lamby Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 When I do nights I do about 4 hours actual work and get paid for 8 , one of the benefits of working on the tube and only being able to work when the trains have stopped running. But when it runs for 24hrs you'll be screwed
separator Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 But when it runs for 24hrs you'll be screwed Yes, fvck knows whats going to happen then. I do more days than nights and prefer that tbh
Lamby Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 Yes, fvck knows whats going to happen then. I do more days than nights and prefer that tbh All I know is they should start it 24hrs 2 days earlier so I can use it to get to Heathrow for 5:30am!
Samilktray Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 What kind of stuff to people do working nights?Im always interested to know this too
separator Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 All I know is they should start it 24hrs 2 days earlier so I can use it to get to Heathrow for 5:30am! N9 night bus trafalgar sq to Heathrow, used that a few times, takes bloody ages though
Lamby Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 N9 night bus trafalgar sq to Heathrow, used that a few times, takes bloody ages though I did it that way last July, took 2 hours. Had all the Friday night drunk revellers on it throwing up too which wasn't good. I might just get a 23 up to Paddington and get the Heathrow Express/Connect as they run that earlier, will cost £20 more than the bus would cost me though!
Unabomber Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 Im always interested to know this too Maybe they are men of the night
DB11 Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 I work in a residential care home for mental health, ASD and learning disabilities. My night shifts are either 1800-0800 or 2200-0800....... I will never ever rely on energy drinks, absolutely disgusting stuff Where is the justification for one night shift starting four hours earlier? Do you make those hours back elsewhere because a 14 hour shift seems very long
Brenfox Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 I used to do nights & hated it. It really affected my mood. My method was to stay awake on your first day so effectively you are awake to close on 24 hours. Then after your final night set your alarm so you only have 3 or 4 hours sleep. By the time night comes around you should be ready to sleep. Some people love it but personally I didnt.
Guest Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 What kind of stuff to people do working nights? Pushing faders around for t'radio
Strokes Posted 20 April 2015 Posted 20 April 2015 I did it for a while and struggled, having two babies didn't help.
Tom's Pasta Posted 20 April 2015 Author Posted 20 April 2015 Where is the justification for one night shift starting four hours earlier? Do you make those hours back elsewhere because a 14 hour shift seems very long There's a 1800-2200 slot which sometimes needs to be covered by night staff, I've only had to do a handful of them fortunately. I do plenty of 14 hour day shifts though 0800-2200
The Quick Brown Fox Posted 21 April 2015 Posted 21 April 2015 I work nights every three weeks,23:00-0700. Try what Brenfox says, stay away from when you wake up before your first night. I am usually able to grab a nap at work if I'm lucky. I don't mind doing them, I get as much sleep as I do when I'm day shift.
Vardinhio Posted 21 April 2015 Posted 21 April 2015 One thing I always try and do is to keep my eating pattern the same, ie if I come off a 22:00hrs v 07:00hrs shift before I go to sleep I will eat breakfast and have a brew. Likewise I try and make sure that I eat a hot meal in the late evening even if I am at work. Regarding sleep it really depends on the shift pattern, if it tends to gradually get later then I will adjust my sleep accordingly so that I have a decent amount of sleep and then only a few hours before work. This gives me the most energy when I need it. I don't have any problems but if I have kids one day I'd imagine things will get considerably more tricky!
ithuriel Posted 21 April 2015 Posted 21 April 2015 Worked a nightshift for nearly 9 years then afternoon-evening shift for 6, got back to working days just in time for this season because I would have to book days off to watch evening games.
zak_lcfc Posted 21 April 2015 Posted 21 April 2015 Used to work nights in a warehouse, the pay was better and I thought it would be more convinient but I was wrong about the latter, I could never get my sleeping pattern back to normal on my days off and I always felt sluggish, switched back to days and the problems gone! Nights had some benefits, everyone just got on with their work and we could listen to earphones which was nice but I didn't feel healthy doing them
RonnieTodger Posted 21 April 2015 Posted 21 April 2015 I have to work 3 shifts 06.00-14.00, 14.00-22.00, 22.00-06.00. Out of all them nights are my favourite and I even asked to be put on permanent nights. It's the best sleep I get, normally a solid 8/9 hours a day. In the summer it can be a bit of a struggle, due to being light when you get in bed and the heat. Blimey, so any hour. What is it you do?
Guest Posted 24 April 2015 Posted 24 April 2015 Doing a night shift with a phone in about sleep problems and night shifts. Oh the irony!
LutterworthLCFC Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 I do regular nightshift 2130 to 0730, I don't mind doing it! Would rather work nights than a afternoon shift. I don't tea or coffee so that doesn't affect my sleep, I can normally get a solid 8 hours sleep.
lestajigs Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 Absolutely hate it, I would say, Monday-Friday days then Saturday night 21.30- 09.30 it's a killer because I can't get with the changes, gets to about 4am and I'm ****ed, no matter how many energy drinks, but when we do work the Saturday night I get Monday and Tuesday off, which is good
daventry_fox Posted 12 May 2015 Posted 12 May 2015 I work Monday Tuesday 5:15am - 2pm Then Thursday, Friday, Saturday 11pm - 7am seriously kills me I usually stay up when I get back from work on a Saturday morning go to the football go home have something to eat and leave for work. Best thing to do is keep yourself busy
ozleicester Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 I havent worked nights in many a lonnng year, im very pleased to say. Way back while i was starting my own business, i was driving a taxi at night 6pm -6am. I can honestly say its the worst job ive ever done, piss head and drug addicts vomiting in the cab, threats...runners and late night road insanity added to exhaustion... a bad bad job. But, by crikey you learn a bit about the human psyche, your own and others. Ive had political leaders, international sports stars, leaders of business, and the every day people in my cab and i learnt a hell of a lot from them all. a couple of tips... If your trying to get a cab at 3am, check your driver, if hes snoozing at a cab rank, you dont want to go with him. Talk to him as he drives, he has been in the cab for 7 hours already, hes tired and some light friendly chat will ensure he is still alert. If you want to go a specific way to your destination.. direct him, he would much rather go the way you want and keep you happy than go his own way and risk you thinking hes trying to rip you off. BE NICE! Night shift sucks!
