kingcarr21 Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Me and the wife want to do something nice for our 2nd wedding anniversary. Thinking of going away somewhere for a night. Anybody got any good recommendations? Weve looked as far as Bournemouth and Manchester so if anyone can give me a good idea for a night away then please share. All ideas are welcome whether it be going somewhere for a Spa day or going to see a show or a good restaurant. The main thing for us is to leave the kids and get away for a night. Dont mind driving somewhere as its most likely we would leave early Friday 3rd July and come back late Saturday 4th July. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Even had a thought on Glamping so anyone with any experience in Glamping?

tom27111 Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Personally, I'd usually choose London. Drive down to Stanmore, free on street parking, 5 minute walk to the tube station, half an hour into the middle of London. Order a couple of Oyster cards before you go, tube costs you about £8 each a day. Loads of things to do during the day, catch a show in the evening and go for a nice meal. The Emirates cable cars over the Thames are pretty good, near the Olympic Park, over to the O2 arena. You're near Canary Wharf too, really nice area, even more expensive than the rest of London though. One thing I've discovered, if you're planning on eating in and around 'Theatreland', book somewhere! Loads of restaurants, they offer really good deals because there is so much competition.

I've only done the theatre thing once, as it's not really my scene. I was dragged to The Lion King, surprisingly good actually. Wimbledon is also on that weekend if that's of interest? Drop me a PM if you need the postcode for the free parking. Saves you a bloody fortune down there.
kingcarr21 Posted 13 May 2015 Author Posted 13 May 2015 champneys in measham maybe? Funnily enough thats where we went for our 1 year anniversary. How strange out of all the places you could have put across the country you put where we went last year. Nice place though but it annoyed me that they didnt sell coke (not the drug kind ). There excuse is that its a health spa. yet they sell champagne which isnt exactly good for you
separator Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Thanks Tom i will take a look. Think the wife is liking the idea of Manchester atm but the cable cars sound good. if you do go to London don't buy an oyster card in advance, it's more expensive as a visitor oyster card has a non refundable deposit. Just buy one on the day or use contactless bank card

Was just thinking it would be closer to home. me and the mrs were looking at paris for her birthday. it turns out it was cheaper than a trip to London. book far enough in advance you can get eurostar tickets for dirt cheap (mrs is terrified of flying) may be worth a look.
kingcarr21 Posted 13 May 2015 Author Posted 13 May 2015 Wife has always wanted to go Paris but if i do a trip like that i would want a long weekend. We can only afford to be away 1 night due to the kids.
Fox92 Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Thanks Tom i will take a look. Think the wife is liking the idea of Manchester atm but the cable cars sound good. Not being biased but Manchester is good. As you imagine with a major City, there's plenty to do. Depends what you're into... The national football museum, science museum and the Pankhurst centre all here. Two major shopping Centres too (the Arndale is good and it's inner City). MediaCity is great, I've been to see both Question of Sport and Countdown being record live as well as taken on a tour (the tour was really good). Old Trafford is up the road from there too and a tour is always worth a visit if you're both into football.
foxoffderby Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Hoarcross Hall, Ragdale Hall, The Belfry. Tick all the boxes and not far away.

Think Manchester has been decided now. Just need to find a nice hotel. Premier Inn only £39 if we book it now but i dont want to stay their for our anniversary. Looking at MediaCity now at Jamie Olivers restaurant. Can you recommend any good restaurants?

tom27111 Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Anal. If you plan on going down Canal Street in Manchester, there's a damn good chance
Wakeyfox Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Went on a valentines weekend away to Manchester earlier this year. Thought Manchester was great, as has been said there's loads to see and do. Luckily our stay coincided with the Phoenix Nights Live tour, so saw that, have a look whats on gig/show/comedy wise as there's tons of venues. We stayed at the Renaissance hotel at the top end of Deansgate, got a good deal even though it was valentines weekend, really classy place, great location etc... for shopping (wife) and bars (you) although looks nothing from the outside.
Webbo Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 If you don't want to go too far because you're only going for 1 night then Stratford on Avon or York are smashing places to visit. Get on Premier Inns website and see if they're doing any offers.
Guest Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 I did wonder how long it would take Depends on whether she likes it or not.
The Blur Posted 13 May 2015 Posted 13 May 2015 Go on TripAdvisor and search for restaurants in Manchester and rank them by best reviews. You can even filter it by cuisine types. That is what I usually do when I am looking for somewhere nice to eat.

No. There's a good all you can eat buffet but that's about it as I rarely go to restaurants.
