Strokes Posted 2 November 2015 Posted 2 November 2015 You would The fact your asking it is enough really The fact that your not telling says it plenty.
GaelicFox Posted 2 November 2015 Posted 2 November 2015 Do you honestly believe that if a Muslim footballer had come out in the same context as McClean and refused to wear the poppy and turn away from the flag he would not have received the same abuse? Regardless if the fan reaction was right or wrong your point on Muslim players is both naive and irrelevant. the IRA songs pipe up every now and again not just when James McClean is playing , strangely over last few years it's been more frequent and other threads have discussed it I will admit it's usually 16/18yo retards in dark aviator jackets and badly fitted jeans , with a wiff of right wing thickness about them it comes up every now and again and it has no relevance in today's world , Anglo Irish relationships are so good and peaceful these days. 99% of away fans wouldn't chant such a thing these days But at weekend there was quite a section singing it But your right in the McClean context my point about Muslims was poorly made and explained Badly so I'll accept that
GaelicFox Posted 2 November 2015 Posted 2 November 2015 The fact that your not telling says it plenty. It was being aimed at an Irish person with no links to the PIRA It was sang Just because he is Irish No different to monkey Chants to black players ! It's bigotry "one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance"

It's bigotry "one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance" It's not sang to other Irish players though is it? Why do you think that is?
GaelicFox Posted 2 November 2015 Posted 2 November 2015 I have heard it sang and usually when Irish players have been on pitch Of course it's aimed at Irish players Maybe not all the time but In my experience I felt it's been because there is an Irish player about And it's not just that song it's the abusive terms That go with it Pikey Irish etc.....

It's nonsense to suggest it's bigotry, you know it is. It's not about the Irish but it is exclusive to them, plenty of Irish/northern Irish people are my absolute heroes at Leicester. So quit being daft.

I'll accept that you have not been a bigot , if you say your not singing it at the Irish ill accept that , so to be clear I'll retract the accusation your a bigot Your protected under the good Friday agreement :)

It's bigotry "one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance" Actually, Mclean has come out saying he would have supported the IRA. Not the provos or the real ira, but the original ones from the 1910's. That people don't know the difference between the original IRA, provisional IRA and Real IRA is why he gets the IRA crap, not because he's Irish.

Not sure I ever read that But 4m of us would support the "old" IRA 1910 till late 1920's Yes ignorance is a dangerous tool Muhjahdeen I was told down my local in Leics a free weekends back were great warriors who beat the Russians When I pointed out they are now known as the Talaban I was accused of twisting history Ha ha ha I give up sometimes
Wymsey Posted 2 November 2015 Posted 2 November 2015 If Roy and Robbie Keane (even if they played for the Republic) didn't refuse to participate once every November for remembrance, McClean shouldn't as well. It's 2015 ffs, move on from history imo.

It's 2015 ffs, move on from history imo. They had a choice and exercised it Neither are from Derry That's the context , the lad is from Derry ! I can assure you both keanes will not be wearing them on 11th I agree also it's time to move on and hopefully one day we won't have chants about the IRA
C-man Posted 3 November 2015 Posted 3 November 2015 Maybe WBA should just photoshop a poppy on every picture of McClean and claim there's nothing in this story. Seems to be good enough for plenty.
The Railway Man Posted 3 November 2015 Posted 3 November 2015 Whatever you thought of the chanting it was pretty weird and different in the pubs after the game with West Brom fans actually coming upto us and thanking us for abusing one of there own players. Feel for them, not only is he absolute doggo on the pitch but he's making them hated off it as well.

The English (in general), don't really have good grasp of Irish history, although things are changing now (see the Beeb's Easter Rising documentaries), so they don't really get that the symbols of patriotism (and Unionism), are also the symbols of Catholic oppression. I think McLean is just a victim of that lack of understanding. MON rated him, and I do too.
