Kitchandro Posted 18 October 2015 Posted 18 October 2015 I've always thought he seems like a horrible scumbag. His face is always defaulted to aggression mode.

AKCJ Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Fair enough if you don't want to wear a poppy, just don't be a scrote about it mate.
SemperEadem Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Interesting take on it... http://thesetpieces.com/features/pieces-of-hate-poppy-fascists/ Good read.
C-man Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Interesting take on it... http://thesetpieces.com/features/pieces-of-hate-poppy-fascists/ Superbly written and wholeheartedly agree. People getting sensitive as per usual.
Guest MattP Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Interesting take on it... http://thesetpieces.com/features/pieces-of-hate-poppy-fascists/ The author of this doesn't seem to actually understand why he has annoyed people, very few if any of the abuse that McClean seems to receive now comes from his decision to not wear the poppy, he can wear what he wants. The abuse he has received most recently is because of his hypocrisy, he's quite prepared to play for a British football club and earn the vast wealth from that whilst refusing to even acknowledge the British flag or British national anthem while representing them, I don't expect him to wear a poppy or sing an anthem but I certainly don't expect him to make a deleterious scene to oppose, to deliberately stand with your head to the floor instead of facing the flag of the team you play for is very childish and shows a total lack of respect. I don't think many other sports fans across the World would tolerate such a distain towards themselved and we shouldn't here either. As if he seriously believes McClean penned that piece at Wigan himself as well.....
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 He strikes me as a typical young guy confused about his own politics that's dug a bit of a hole for himself. I went through a fairly cringeworthy phase in my late teens of reading books about MAC and the FWA and really thinking Wales should be a free country. I grew up in a ridiculously safe world, comfortable, never really poor, never saw any political violence, never knew anyone that knew anyone that knew anyone who had ever been killed let alone had it in my community. Had I been given the talents of a professional footballer I'd have most likely come through the ranks of an English club at that age, with a pretty neutral accent that few would describe as very Welsh. I'd still have refused to play for the UK in the Olympics, would refuse to acknowledge God Save The Queen or the Union Jack and would have probably been a proper little Scott Brown style cvnt if I was called up by Wales to play England. I grew out of it. I like this country, I like my English friends, it was a phase and a stupid one. But if I'd gotten off to that start as a professional footballer, it would have followed me for life. I'd back myself to be considerably smarter than McLean and more mature, I'm also not from the most politically charged community in the entire Brittish Isles, having been brought up a passionately staunch nationalist. I don't condone everything he's done but McLean has my sympathy. He was spot on with the poppy, frankly, and spot on in regards his celebrating infront of fans who'd given him grief for ninety odd minutes. You might not like or agree with what he believes in but isn't it fairly refreshing to at least have a footballer who DOES believe in something? Someone with something to say that isn't "yeah the lads worked hard today, we really wanted a win"? If he starts organising a whip round for the provos or celebrating the bombing of English cities then I'm all for sticking him in the back of a van, driving him to Holyhead, strapping some water wings on him and shoving him towards Dublin. Until then, he's really not actually bothering anyone that doesn't choose to be bothered.
Captain... Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 This latest "incident" is a nothing, and has nothing to do with any other past indiscretions, Sunderland were fans were giving him shit and he gave them some back.
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Put another way, what's worse, McLean quietly refusing to recognise the union flag or Cisse claiming he can't wear a Wonga logo on religious grounds and then doing a massive u turn on realising he won't get his own way?
Guest MattP Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Fairly sure someone like McClean would already have done his share of rejoicing at the IRA attacks and "put a few quid in for the boys" given his upbringing and reputation. I hope I'm wrong of course and probably can't be proven right, but to hold the sort of views he has you'd have to be a pretty staunch nationalist. Regarding Cisse I think everyone apart from a very small amount of people could see what that was really about.
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 That's a bit like me saying Wayne Rooney probably spent his youth shop lifting from offies and kicking in local ethnic minority kids, to be fair. Judge the bloke on what he does, I guess, but a bit harsh judging him on what you assume his upbringing was like. Think that's what that prejudice thing is all about. Edit: I suppose I'm partly defending him on the same assumptions, so I'm just as bad. Oh well!!
The Railway Man Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 That's a bit like me saying Wayne Rooney probably spent his youth shop lifting from offies and kicking in local ethnic minority kids, to be fair. I'd put money on that he did.
Guest MattP Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 You can imagine what kids like Rooney and Barton were like...
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 You can imagine what kids like Vardy were like...
Guest MattP Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Used to run with Wednesdays hooligans apparantly.
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Doesn't even vaguely surprise me. Chat shit get banged.
Guest MattP Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 I want see him pick up the Premier League top scorer then at the PFA night say that and walk off as his speech when he picks up the award.
Finnegan Posted 20 October 2015 Posted 20 October 2015 Hahaha making sure to drop the mic and/or gong gangsta rap style.
danny. Posted 31 October 2015 Posted 31 October 2015 I don't wear a red poppy and wouldn't sing the national anthem (I'm a republican and don't have any desire for an imaginary sky man to save a rich old unelected woman), as a 'born and bred' English man, can someone explain where I need to **** off back to?
Guest seanfox778 Posted 31 October 2015 Posted 31 October 2015 I don't get what all the fuss is about, who cares if some bloke doesn't want to wear a flower on his shirt or turn in a certain direction when a piece of music is played. He can do what he wants.
Guest MattP Posted 31 October 2015 Posted 31 October 2015 No problem if he doesn't want to wear a poppy, that's his decision. His other behaviour is pathetic though; if he can't stand properly and respect an anthem he has issues and probably should think about plying his trade somewhere else. And Danny you do realise that most people don't literally believe the words of an anthem when singing them surely? I don't believe in God either but it would never stop me singing my countries anthem I doubt the French genuinely want to start slitting the throats of people in the countryside either when they sing theirs.
