GaelicFox Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 The English (in general), don't really have good grasp of Irish history, although things are changing now (see the Beeb's Easter Rising documentaries), so they don't really get that the symbols of patriotism (and Unionism), are also the symbols of Catholic oppression. I think McLean is just a victim of that lack of understanding. MON rated him, and I do too. Here here But maybe next year City fans won't boo him because the boy but in a serious shift last night !
Jpa1024 Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Why should we appreciate the arrogant **** If he hates this nation so much an that's his rightly choice why is he happy to take a wage from it, if I hated something or someone I'd have nothing to do with them what so ever, he refuses to wear a poppy, he turns his back on our national anthem but he's happy to earn a wage here, sorry that's not acceptable, he should go an play in the Irish league and earn his wage, simple as that

Not wanting to wear a poppy or sing the national anthem does not mean that he hates an entire nation. I don't wear a red poppy and never would (pacifist), and I would never sing the national anthem (republican) - doesn't mean I hate the nation of England. People do not need deporting or told they cannot work in the UK because they have different opinions to you. Great for you if you support war and are a Royalist, doesn't mean everyone that feels differently is wrong, or has no right to work/live on the same part of the planet as you - there is a word for that: bigotry.

Where in the world would you like me to go in order to earn a living? And are you paying for the flights?
The Railway Man Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Here here But maybe next year City fans won't boo him because the boy but in a serious shift last night ! We'll still boo him, he's a hypocrite and someone who refuses to honour the people who created the freedoms he now takes advantage of. I don't wear a poppy or sing the national anthem. Where in the world would you like me to go in order to earn a living? And are you paying for the flights? Everywhere has it's born and bred individuals that hate their own country, it's the principle he's prepared to move to ours to earn a good wage that people see as the problem. If I hated the French, refuse to sing their anthem, hate the country I wouldn't move there to earn a very good living.

The reasons why this stance is inane have already been expressed in this thread, I don't expect anybody who is unable to grasp them to change their perspective.

GaelicFox Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 So if you lived in France you'd sing their anthem at sporting events? what? French like to cut off royals heads , maybe he Would follow suit
The Railway Man Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Ignorant bigot You'll win a Labour party membership with comments like that. So if you lived in France you'd sing their anthem at sporting events? what? Yeah, I lived in the States for a while, enjoyed belting out the anthem, nothing wrong with showing a bit of respect for the home nation. Though I don't expect anybody who shows support for McClean to be capable of grasping that concept to change their perspective.

I'll always remember our war dead but I'm glad we live in a nation where we can be free to express opinions like McClean's, regardless of how abhorrent we may find them.
danny. Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Why are we equating singing a song or wearing a flower with honouring a nation?

McClean was born in Derry as well. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_McClean
GaelicFox Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 Why are we equating singing a song or wearing a flower with honouring a nation? Good question I think it's because it's the last bastion of nationalism left in this country I wish the British especially the English would celebrate thier nationhood a bit more Might mean I could get to the bar on st Patrick's day !!!

You have a choice these days born in the North, McClean chooses to be Irish, not British. For what it's worth I think McClean gets the most abuse because of his childish petulant acts like turning his back on flags rather than the poppy episode, as Pulis has said before, he isn't the brightest and probably doesn't realise the consequences of his actions. I'm not really that bothered, the guy is just an idiot.

It seems, rather ironically, you're playing the race card in an attempt to deflect attention away from your ramblings above.
Captain... Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 We'll still boo him, he's a hypocrite and someone who refuses to honour the people who created the freedoms he now takes advantage of. He doesn't "refuse to honour the people who created the freedoms he now takes advantage of". He refuses to wear a poppy becomes it signifies a lot more than that. He has no problem with the people that fought in the World Wars. His issue is with the soldiers that killed his friends and family that are also represented by the poppy.
GaelicFox Posted 26 April 2016 Posted 26 April 2016 "You're" dumber you mean. No chief Your the dumber part of the referenced analogy which was "dumb and dumber" So if he is "dumb" , your the "dumber" half of that duo Your ...Dumber How apt
