First openly gay (current) Rugby League player

We'll never get past all this until the media stop making it out to be a big deal each time a famous person "comes out". He's gay, so what.

In the long term, it shouldn't be a big deal. I agree.

But right now, what's needed for the gay (sports) community is visibility. It's still an unusual thing for a professional sportsman to be gay, and the only way it will stop being newsworthy is once it becomes reasonably normal. The more 'high profile' players that come out, the more that it will lose its impact as a news story.

It holds no relevance whatsoever to the player's abilities, but it's a big cultural change that has only really started happening in professional football/rugby over the last 5 years with players now feeling comfortable coming out.

When we live in a world so fixated on the celeb lifestyle, the partners and lifestyles of sportsmen will always be in the tabloids no different to if a sportsman starts seeing someone, or their marriage breaks down, or they have an affair. It will always be news, regardless.

It will stop becoming big news when people believe that there aren't hundreds of gay professional sportsmen up and down the country too scared to come out. Worried about how it will affect their career. It is not a case of stop reporting it and everything will be fine. There need to be positive role models out there first before the suspected hundreds of gay professional sportsmen will feel comfortable coming out and for that to work when a current lower level rugby league player comes out and is accepted it should be widely reported as much as possible. When there are many gay professional sportsmen it will stop being an issue, and won't need to be reported. Not the other way round.

What the doctor said.. plus... until gay people have genuine equality society needs to be reminded. Keep in mind, i live in a country where same sex people cannot marry... seriously WTF???

In case you wonder why this is so.......... we are being run by a man who has yet to leave the 1950's... a man who thought it would be a good idea to "Knight" Prince Phillip.

The atheist in me , ooh er missus, says that has more to do with his strong Catholic beliefs than anything else. On that basis he is no different from IS.

Yeah, banning gay marriage is exactly the same as throwing gays off the top of tall buildings. You don't half talk bollox.

To be fair, this man (Tony Abbot) has created more fear and terror than IS have.

Also, there will... definitely will be young gay people who die as a result of his homophobia.

Did the previous Labour govt legalise gay marriage? How many gay people died because of that?

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.  Alexander Pope in his poem An Essay on Criticism (1709).

Read around the topic of Tony Abbott - he is a man driven by the same sort of religious fanaticism as IS.

No, one of the state/territory governments did, but the federal government overrode the decision.

How many people from the LGBTIQ community dies as a result of it not being legal is an impossible figure to know, however i do KNOW that LGBTIQ people are 5-7 times more likely to suicide than the rest of the population.

Part of this is due to them feeling excluded from society and the anti equal marriage people and decisions reinforce this.

lol lol Oz that's ridiculous over the top.

I can see why you would say that, and im certainly not in any way deflecting the horrors of IS, however, IS are not a real threat to most people in Australia, but this prime minister is. he using them as a weapon to scare simple minded aussies to remove our freedoms and basic rights, just to ensure that he and his party remain in power.

This is a government that recently asked ASIO for "a list of national security related things that could be released weekly between now and the election" (August 2016)

He and his government are using fear shamelessly...

We now lock innocent men women and children (some have been in detention for 4 years) in detention centres if they attempt to come as a refugee.

We have 800 police officers raid 30 homes in Sydney one morning... and arrest 1 person.  http://www.smh.com.au/national/terror-raids-800-police-and-two-men-charged-20140918-10iwwh.html

When you put it like that mass rape, genocide and beheadings seem quite mild in comparison.

You really need to do some reading up on IS Oz if you seriously believe this sort of stuff.

Got to be one of the most difficult sports to come out in. It's the national sport of the cliché northern monkey.

IS it though? Most Rugby fans are pretty posh, middle class and fairly accepting/liberal. Rugby guys are one of the gayest groups around with. They're the kind of group who would suck their mates dick to prove how straight they are.

Well done on the guy coming out. Eventually it shouldnt be reported but him coming out as gay will inspire a lot of gay young boys who might not have otherwise done so. So odd how quiet football is about it

Visibility. They've had so much "visibility" you can't miss em. The gay movement seems like one long publicity stunt. Who the hell cares?

I actually think gays have suffered more since they embraced publicity and started ramming their sexuality down everyone's throats but I doubt anyone will take responsibility for that.

For me, people should just get on with being who they are. There's no need for the constant flag-waving.

I think you're getting Rugby Union fans mixed up with League. I think there's one southern rugby league team (probably wrong) and that's London Broncos who don't attract many fans at all.
