HighPeakFox Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Knowing who we've signed, and how CR has been setting up thus far, what are peoples' opinions on his intent? Will he set up to attack (as I suspect a majority want) or is he too steeped in a defensive mentality (as I suspect many of us fear)? Thoughts please.

SecretPro Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Considering he hasn't really made much effort to strengthen the defence, has bought in a winger and two very good centre mids I'd suggest he's simply looking to continue where we left off.
Wymsey Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 He's correctly carrying on from what Pearson did, and he should continue to do so. Never change a 'winning' (attacking) formula and the like. There's no point in being too defensive, as it doesn't get you anywhere, unless the manager has no ambition; completely the opposite to what our owners want (success).
chicagofox Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 is he too steeped in a defensive mentality (as I suspect many of us fear)? . Is this based purely on him being Italian?
HighPeakFox Posted 2 September 2015 Author Posted 2 September 2015 Is this based purely on him being Italian? It's a question - nothing more, nothing less.
AyewJoking Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 I think he thinks you we can play defensively and rely on our forwards to make the difference.
lgfualol Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 We have players to attack when we need to and have the players to set up defensively. I dont care how we play so long as we stay up this season.
Rhysm Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 I think he has done pretty well so far. Kept momentum going and pleased we are still picking up points. Like that we are playing the ball out along the ground as well. Has clearly set up defensive style and hit teams with pace on the counter. My only worry is when we play teams who sit back themselves.
Kitchandro Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 I don't think the signings tell us much. He was looking for a right back but we didn't get one. So does he stick with De Laet or go with a back 3? We've made signings over the summer that we all said were necessary, I don't think they suggest a positive or negative approach. I'm reasonably confident that he's learned a lesson from our dreadful 1st half on Saturday and won't be trying the negative 4-5-1 again.
NewquayFox Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 We're gonna score one more than you, na na naaa na na naaa na na na na na na na naaaa.... Admit it you sang this just then didn't you... Up the City....
Kitchandro Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 We have players to attack when we need to and have the players to set up defensively. I dont care how we play so long as we stay up this season. Not me. Just staying up is not what a club should aspire to. This is the beautiful game and people want to be entertained. Why settle for playing dreadful football and just surviving? Where's the joy in that? Especially when you see the route Swansea have gone down and how they've benefitted from it. It should also be said that we'll struggle if we set up defensively, as proven time and time again.

We even sat back at Bury and looked poor for a good half hour..........
MONreborn Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 I think this has been covered in the thread criticising Ranieri for the Bournemouth game. He has changed the whole set up to become more defensive. Gone is the 352 and the waves of relentless pressure and closing down. We have been very fortunate to get points out of the last 2 games. Let's hope he learns his lesson and we start to play like we know and can.
Ric Flair Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 So far his substitutions have mostly always been tactical, usually to become more defensive and to shut up shop when we have a lead. This is something Pearson never did and sometimes we were caught out but also it meant we would continue to attack teams and often put games to bed and give our strikers and wingers plenty of appearances. If Ranieri continues as he is doing then the likes of Ulloa and Kramaric will barely get any minutes unless Vardy or Okazaki are injured or suffer a severe drop in form. Hopefully as the season pans out we'll get a better picture of how Ranieri operates. Making us harder to beat is definitely a plus point but we've proven in the past that this squad is better suited at being positive rather than stopping the opposition, especially when our defence is as suspect as it is.
HighPeakFox Posted 2 September 2015 Author Posted 2 September 2015 I just think you stop the opposition most effectively by putting them under an awful lot of attacking pressure.
Jazzy_Jeff Posted 2 September 2015 Posted 2 September 2015 Could it be possible we are setting up in the system we are and with the players we are until the new signings are up to speed? If we had chucked all new signings in straight away it could have been a car crash. We are still unbeaten and every week that passes the new players are fitter and better integrated into the squad. We definitely have the personnel for the 3-4-1-2 we were playing the end of last season with the ability to tweak it if we need to once everyone is where they need to be.

Exactly. Why not just go for it, take the shackles off. I'm afraid that Ranieri is now too old. You can't teach and old dog new tricks. He's never played 352 and never will, despite this being our best formation. I can foresee a season of struggle unfortunately, when we could have so much more

We are averaging less than 40% of possession which indicates we are more defensive?! but i feel when we do have possession this year we are more purposeful and taking are chances better, so i believe we have a better blend of both. We are tactically better this year and have a game plan, of course the signings this year have strengthen us to a top ten team and teams will not enjoy playing us because of our lethal counter attacking ability.

He's never played 352 and never will, despite this being our best formation. I can foresee a season of struggle unfortunately, when we could have so much more I tend to agree. I like Ranieri but I do have a few worries that he might struggle to realise the best way for us to play. We've seen this squad be put together, we've seen Pearson struggle to be tactical with us and then we've witnessed a system where our strengths can be best utilized in a 3-5-2. The only negative to this formation that I can possibly think of given the squad at our disposal is that Mahrez isn't quite as effective behind the strikers as he is out wide but other than that it suits us so well. Especially as Schlupp and Albrighton are perfect wing backs and an extra centre half makes us more solid plus allows those two to play further up the pitch. Sometimes it's not about formation though but mentality and style of play. We are best when we press and harry from the front and all over. The main concern for me is if Ranieri tries to change this and if he is afraid to replace a striker for a striker or throw another one on, it doesn't look like he does that which is a shame for the fans and the strikers we have.

5waller5 Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 Is this based purely on him being Italian? I've heard him twice say in interviews that as an Italian he is always disappointed to conceded a goal.

Ditto .... there's a lot of things that we said a year or two ago that we were shot down in flames for .... It's nice to be right, but it's nicer to be proved right and say nothing!!
