I do a lot in E Europe, Tatra, Carpathian, Balkan mountains ranges.

I really fancy Norway, I think it was IOWfox that mentioned it a couple of months ago and it appeals greatly.

Hoping to do quite a bit in the Scottish highlands soon.

I've not hiked this particular trail, but I hiked the GR10 (Pyrenean Trail - 500+ miles, end to end) solo about 20 years ago. If there are any stretches where you'll be several days walk from the nearest medical assistance, I would strongly recommend that you carry a decent medikit, including a broad-spectrum antibiotic and an opiate-based pain killer - illness or injury in those circumstances can be life-threatening. An emergency bivvy bag is a must, too.

If you have 10 or so days to spare, the West Highland Way (Glasgow to Fort William) is magnificent.

I did parts of it this summer actually, from around Crianlarich to Glencoe. I'd like to do more off-the-beaten track stuff further north.

Nice to see you back on the forum Nige.

I'm sure another thread like this exists but couldn't find it.

Has anyone got any recommendations for decent hikes in the UK, can be for a few days or so. I've done Yorkshire three peaks and planning to do the national one in May.

Anywhere on the South west coast path.... I live on the bit between Weymouth and Abbotsbury. Beautiful scenery.

Definitely. The north coasts of Devon and Cornwall are quite overlooked aswell.

I suppose the National Parks are the go to places, I’ve spent a lot of time on Dartmoor and Exmoor but have always planned on going up to Northumbria. I think it’s St Oswald Way is supposed to be decent.

I can’t rememeber who suggested it but someone on here was saying how they had walked a few hundred miles in a week or 10 days. Would be interested in doing something similar and sleeping in a tent but would need to do a shorter one first.

That may have been me, Costock.

I hiked the South Downs Way last summer.

Thought it was you mate but didn’t want to tag a random person.

Did you sleep in a tent along the way? Would it be possible to do it over a shorter amount of time? Not sure I fancy sharing a tent with two husky’s or a week.

No, I didn’t use a tent. Most long distance hikers favour using a ‘tarp’ nowadays, as the modern hiking style has moved towards light/ultralight packs, so I thought I’d give it a go. No reason you couldn’t take a tent though.

I couldn’t speculate on time over distance without knowing your fitness levels, pack weight, terrain etc, but I could comfortably cover 20 miles a day on anything but mountain terrain.

Ok cool so you slept out in the open basically, not an option as the dogs would run off but just wanted to make sure I could legally kip outside.

I’m pretty fit (if I do say so myself) and did Yorkshire three peaks in 9 hours with a few long stops to wait for others so would be fine.

Have you ever done the National Three Peaks? I like the idea of doing it but it’s a logistical nightmare.

I don’t know if it’s stricly legal but if you follow ‘leave no trace’ principles you should be fine.

Could’t you tether the dogs?

No, I’ve never done the Three Peaks. I’m no stranger to mountains but most of my hiking has been done abroad.

There was a 100 best walks program on ITV last night, I'd guess it's still on ITVplayer. I was surprised how many I'd done, in part or whole.

By national three peaks I guess you mean Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis? Did them years ago, she I was in my mid-30s, but we did it in just over 48 hrs. We didn't have a driver who stayed as base, doesn't go on the walk. To do it in 24 hrs you need that person to kip whilst you do the mountains, so that you can kip in the car. Obviously you need torches too, you be walking in some dark, though if you do it in high summer, which makes a lot of sense, you can be in transit between Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, which can take 4-5 hours (on the plus side, you pass through Glasgow whilst it's dark and you're sleeping).

Personally, I think the drive time is as difficult to manage to do the three in 24 hrs as the walking; unless you're a top fell runner and can get up and down in a couple of hours.
