i haven't looked into the story yet and i know a little about Hajj and the pilgrimage. but what caused the stampede?

Apparently as innocuous as two groups of pilgrims coming together. Hard to comprehend really.

Awful. Not liking tight-spaces and crowds, this is my worst nightmare.

Unfortunately, this isn't the first time it has happened at this exact location. They really need to do something to avoid it happening again.

Just to go see a metorite.....

Brainwashed....

Ridiculous...

Different strokes for different folks. Religion's not really my bag but there have been hundreds of people killed at football matches in the last 50 years....

Really got to stop this stoning the devil ritual, that's over 1,000 deaths in ten years.

Either expand it so it's safe or take into consideration you might be pissing him off.

That dude on "my brother the Islamist" on BBC3 came out with that line.

Is this the same place where some crane collapsed and killed 100+ people?

Seriously, there's no point going to that site - as it appears to be a danger zone (no matter how religious/important it is to the city etc).

Maybe the apparent devil there gets pissed off and angry?

Yes mate, it is the same place as the crane collapse. That's nearly 1000 needlessly killed.

With all the money made out of the pilgrims and how rich the country is, isn't it about time the authorities over there finally sorted out the H & S aspect. Having been to the middle east a few times, It is perhaps fair to say that H & S is not really in their psyche, but they have to stop these fatalities, which occur every few years. Bringing in crowd control measures, but not rolling out the system to all areas is just poor management. The blame game has started, but it won't bring back those poor souls who have lost their loves.

Just read about the previous stampedes, that is over 3000 people who have died now over the years from stampedes alone.

Then there has been fires in tents where there have been more deaths.

My old boss went once, he came back looking like he had died. Hair shaved off, sluming it for a few days, he really looked very ill.

People died the year he went, but his view on it was that it was meant to happen and that the dead would have felt privilege coming to an end at such a wonderful place.

The Saudi's (or the UAE or Bahrain for that matter) couldn't care less about H%S.

Life is very cheap out there, if you lose a few people just import a few more, slavery is still acceptable in vast parts of the Arab World.

Some guy on the radio earlier explaining that some go there hoping for this kind of thing to happen so they'll be killed in Mecca.

Bizarre bunch that's for sure.
