leicsmac Posted 21 February 2016 Posted 21 February 2016 Trump wins in South Carolina, Hillary in Nevada. Jeb Bush becomes the latest casualty amongst the Repub candidates - expect that to become a three-horse race very soon.
leicsmac Posted 21 February 2016 Posted 21 February 2016 Trump: "When China wants to come and negotiate, they’re not gonna negotiate with a political hack... they’re gonna negotiate with the best business minds in the country."Yes, Don, because: - international diplomacy and business negotiations are exactly the same thing. - you, the best business mind in the country, haven't been forced to file for bankruptcy for a company you own four times. Good grief, and people are actually buying this?
leicsmac Posted 21 February 2016 Posted 21 February 2016 Cruz: "(I) can't wait to debate with Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders or "whatever socialist" wins the Democratic nomination." You might find that not enough people that aren't WASPs buy into your 1950's household Baptist social conservative utopia, Ted. Because, you know, they like Roe v Wade and the idea that people should be able to marry any other people of their own choosing and have all the benefits that entails. But, by all means, bring on the debates.
Guest MattP Posted 21 February 2016 Posted 21 February 2016 Whatever people think of Trump he's bloody marvellous in debates, still don't see him winning but thought of him tearing Hillary Clinton to shreads fills me with joy. I doubt Sanders would walk off the stage alive
MC Prussian Posted 21 February 2016 Posted 21 February 2016 Whatever people think of Trump he's bloody marvellous in debates, still don't see him winning but thought of him tearing Hillary Clinton to shreads fills me with joy. I doubt Sanders would walk off the stage alive My scenario sees Trump and Clinton involved in a massive verbal shootout, with both unable to continue due to the heavy injuries sustained in the debate. Enter Bernie Sanders. He gets elected and then has to forfeit because of bad health - paving the way for the vice president to take his place.

I doubt Sanders would walk off the stage alive Think Clinton would beat Trump ,but would lose to any other candidate. I hope the Republican plan is for Trump to fail later as Clinton is vile just like grooper Bill was

I hope the Republican plan is for Trump to fail later as Clinton is vile just like grooper Bill was I think Clinton would beat Cruz too. Not sure about Rubio. And yes, she may be vile, but not nearly as much so as either Cruz or Trump.

I doubt Sanders would walk off the stage alive He's a populist, not a politician. If he gets the nomination and has to explain all of his platform in detail he could well get picked apart by a Washington native like Hillary. Bernie v Trump would be fun though, two proper old nutters poles apart going for it.
Claridge Posted 21 February 2016 Posted 21 February 2016 I think Clinton would beat Cruz too. Not sure about Rubio. And yes, she may be vile, but not nearly as much so as either Cruz or Trump. Sad but true
Carl the Llama Posted 21 February 2016 Posted 21 February 2016 Did I just read someone refer to Trump as tearing someone to shreds instead of remarking how bigoted and childish his debate techniques are? I thought we were more sensible on this side of the pond.
Guest MattP Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 Yes you did Carl, it's not as dramatic a quote as you think and quite a widely held belief among political commentators who have actually watched the debates. I doubt you would be able to see past the froth and red mist to judge though, who do you actually think has been winning the Republican debates if not Trump?
mancunianfox Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 The American Federal Government by design makes meaningful change either near impossible or extremely slow. 4 years of Trump would be grimly hilarious if nothing else. Imagine him with nukes!
Merging Cultures Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 Trump just resorts to being rude in debates. If he debated the implementation of his policies, he'd really struggle.
Guest MattP Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 The Democrats wouldn't want to debate the obvious flaws in the implementation of his politics, those things are so extreme they'll keep him out of office. If the population know he won't able to push through his more radical ideas he becomes more electable among the wider public as any Trump supported still isn't shifting to Clinton, he could only boost his ratings in the centre.

Trump just resorts to being rude in debates. If he debated the implementation of his policies, he'd really struggle. What MC said. Right now he can get away with populist diatrabe and blaming the Mexicans/Chinese/insert boogeyman of choice here and he'll pick up points for it because he sounds good and the people against him don't know how to deal with it, as well as controversy selling and people liking someone who seems to be stirring the pot. But in the long run his lack of solid platform is going to end up getting him picked apart, which is why I'd like to see him win the nomination, as I have from the start.
Guest MattP Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 Maybe it's me but I've never found him rude in the debates, it's certainly far more robust and aggressive than anything we do which may make it come as so. Certainly wouldn't disagree with your other quote though, if I was a democrat I'd be in the same position as the Tories here, just hoping the opposition continue to pick totally unelectable leaders.
ramboacdc Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 didn't realise there had been primaries on Saturday, always thought it was on a Tuesday. but trump won south Carolina and Clinton won Nevada.
Guest MattP Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 Trump has pretty much beaten off all the competition now except for Rubio, he'll become the anti Trump candidate and I think that one is going to be close. Hard to see Sanders beating Hilary now, had to make some inroads in Nevada, she'll hammer him in South Carolina.
Detroit Blues Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 Trump has pretty much beaten off all the competition now except for Rubio, he'll become the anti Trump candidate and I think that one is going to be close. Hard to see Sanders beating Hilary now, had to make some inroads in Nevada, she'll hammer him in South Carolina. The wildcard is always that the FBI might drop the hammer on Hilary. If she is formally charged by the FBI for her handling of confidential documents, it could massively sway the election. Otherwise, you're probably right. She'll either finish even or ahead of Bernie Sanders without considering her massive advantage of unpledged delegates.
mancunianfox Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 He does tone the more offensive stuff down a lot in the debates for sure I think the timing of these comments is very calculated to generate huge coverage of his campaign even if the content isn't. I am not sure if that is a tactic that can take him all the way to the Presidency and I am not even 100% convinced he actually wants it either. Must be utter madness for the team working on his campaign. His appeal is surely limited to a certain section of the GOP and the polls showing that large numbers of republicans have said that they won't vote for him must surely be a worry (especially if Clinton wins the nomination over Sanders) to Trump's team. If they won't vote for him how on earth are they going to sell him to Democrat voters?
leicsmac Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 There is an additional factor that might end up being crucial in November also. A reasonable subsection of hardcore Bernie supporters are now, in the light of what they perceive to be dirty tricks by the Clinton campaign, are pursuing an ideal of 'Bernie or Bust' - basically, if Bernie doesn't win the Democratic nomination, they don't turn out for the general election. Now, right now I think this subset is pretty small and not big enough to cause an effect, but as the campaigning goes on it's possible such a movement could grow and spread, with the end result being that Hillary loses a lot of normally-Dem voters in key swing states and the Repubs win because a critical chunk of the Dem vote essentially stays at home in a huff. If that sounds bloody ridiculous to you, don't be surprised - it sounds equally so to me. It is shooting yourself and a bunch of already disadvantaged people in the foot, really hard, repeatedly, for the simple sake of a little bruised pride that your candidate didn't come through. But it seems like it could be a real and scarily decisive factor come November.
Guest MattP Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 Having heard interviews with a lot of Sanders supporters that wouldn't surprise me (when they aren't going on about Jews, the 1% or other conspiracy theories) struck me in a very similar way to Corbynistas, young ideologists who'll throw the toys out the pram if they don't get their own way.
mancunianfox Posted 22 February 2016 Posted 22 February 2016 With an alternative of Trump I think that is a pretty empty threat at best.
