Filbo: old and new

Recommended Posts

Two things:

1. Old Filbo:

The empty space where Filbo used to be is an embarrassment and a sad memorial to decades of happy memories.

Is there any chance that the council could compulsory purchase back the land to turn it into several 5-a-side football pitches or some kind of sports space?

Surely, that would be the best and aptest legacy for what is currently wasteland?

2. New Filbo:

Whatever happens in the last 6 games of this season (and now that we 'are big time' at least for a season) isn't it the right time for the historical association between Leicester's football ground and the word Filbert to be reset.

Don't get me wrong, I am truly very grateful to our incredible owners who so far have been wonderfully patient and understandable with regard to the soul and heart of our club. They have a rare combination of business knowledge coupled with local awareness that is priceless and I do feel in debt to them...

Nevertheless...

It irks me considerably, and I am sure it does others too, that our great club has a corporate name for our footballing home. There are many other opportunities for the words 'King Power' to be associated with the club. The name is on the front of our shirts already for goodness-sake... So I don't think the money part of this should enter the equation.

Time for the 'King Power Stadium' to be renamed properly as 'Filbert Way' to mark a new era for our club?

Filbert Street is a disgrace. I said the same thing on Sunday. It's sad tbf.

Anything there, even a car park, is better than it's current state.

Why would the rename it now? Coming into potentially the most successful era in the clubs history, the brand is still big for them. I don't and wouldn't really expect them to name it.

Like Haydos said, they'll never change the name. They're probably frothing at the mouth over the thought of hundreds of thousands of people watching Leicester take on a Europe elite at the "King Power" Stadium.

They really should build something where the old Filbo was. It's so Leicestery that it is just a wasteland destined to be student flats.

Absolutely agree with the idea about renaming the stadium to Filbert Way. It would be so nice to be honest to have a stadium name which is more unique to us as a club. If we look at other clubs stadium names in the division; Palace | Selhurst Park, Watford | Vicarage Road, Chelsea | Stamford Bridge, Norwich | Carrow Road. Those few that are mentioned are all non sponsored stadium names, and probably hold a lot more originality for each of those club's homes.

Now we have managed to have flags in the stadium at the back of the Kop, renaming the ground to Filbert Way would be another step closer to making this stadium feel more like our home. In a way though it is partly called Filbert Way becasue of the stadium's address so despite the sponsorship name we can still call it Filbert Way too.

There's also an idea I've had about having a long banner at the front of the Kop, which would be placed on the front rail from SK1 to SK4. On the banner would be inspirational quotes and sayings, such as 'We are the 12th Man' for instance. Given the two seasons we've experienced I feel this would be a great way to include some relevant quotes which reflect the time we've had in the PL so far. I've been wanting to contact somebody at the club about this, perhaps a meeting or something but I'm afraid I don't know who to talk to. As well as this, I've also considered to incorporate legends of the club onto the banner, but if that's not possible I'd love to see the return of all our legends on the current blue banners inside the ground, like it was before when it was the Walkers. There's still so many ideas I've got which would make our stadium more unique to us.

I read somewhere that when the stadium was originally built, it was planned to be called Filbert Way anyway, before it was given the name the Walkers. Although us as fans probably all would of wanted to have Filbert Way as the stadium's name, it's understandable it was changed given that Walkers are a Leicester based company and the revenue would be better for the club. So, I suppose when the owners bought the club I suppose it was ultimately easier to rename the stadium again to their King Power company as there was already a sponsored name in the first place. I don't mind King Power but the Filbert Way name would be superb.

It's simply not going to happen.

King Power gets an immense amount of exposure from the spoken name of King Power stadium. The owners purchased the stadium for that reason. Everyone world wide is now googling King Power as a result. Why would the owners give that up?

Considering how difficult it is to park near the stadium, a LCFC owned car park would be ideal for the use of the old Filbert St site.

It'd be decent if we could get a stand renamed to something a bit more personal to us as well

Agree entirely with Goober on this. I've been to many stadiums myself and many times I've seen at least one stand of the particular stadiums which are named after a legend or a name which has a traditional link to the specific football club. If ever this went ahead in the future, we've got plenty of legends to choose from which are certainly worthy of a stand rename. At least we have got the lounges in the stadium named after legends though, if I recall correctly.

Don't see why they couldn't rename the stands or something, they'll never rename the ground though.

Hopefully after this season people will stop putting down the new stadium and it's atmosphere at every opportunity and connect it to what we've done over the past three years rather than bemoaning how 'soulless' it is etc etc. The ground needed some history, that's all.

I'm hopeful something can be done in the near future in terms of either renaming a stand, statues outside the stadium, or incorporating our legends again inside the ground.

Should rename the Family Stand the "Filbert Street End".

This is what I'm talking about. There's countless times other clubs have more original names for their stands in the stadiums I've been to, and names like this would be great for us to have in our ground in my opinion.

This is what I feel would be good to add to both the inside and outside of the ground to give it more character and uniqueness:

- Statues

- Renamed stands relevant to legends or the former stadium

- Legends on the blue banner inside the stadium again (like there were before when it was the Walkers)

- Long banner on the front rail of the Kop with some inspirational quotes, worthy of doing considering within 5 years we have achieved a Championship title, the great escape and now possibly a BPL title. I feel we need some quotes relevant to the successes of recent years/seasons.

We should turn it into a small Childrens Academy. The area isn't too much, so do something for the next generation. Build an indoor centre with 2 small 6 aside pitches that could also be used for lads much older for 5 or 6 aside tournaments. It's a disgrace at the moment.

Technically, the stadium cannot be advertised as the King Power Stadium in the Champions League as King Power are not an official 'business partner,' or whatever bullshit corporate term is used, of UEFA.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Bayern Munich all have similar issues and see their grounds renamed for UEFA competition - surely we could officially label the stadium Filbert Way purely for the purposes of UEFA competition? I'm not sure what the implications are for the King Power branding within the stadium either - another potential opportunity there.

As for Filbert Street - I'd love to see the club take over the derelict parts and build a club museum there. It'd be low rise, so the residents would have little cause to complain, and would be a genuine nod to the heritage of our football club. As well as a museum, I like Littletoe's idea of building an indoor site for the next generation of City players and fans - make it a genuine centre for the past and future.

It's an absolute disgrace at the moment and genuinely saddens me to see a place where so much history was made become an eyesore.

Of course to an extent, Haydos, Igfualol and FoxinNotts, you are right (I assume having the words 'King Power' Stadium as a European football competition ground is worth a lot of money to our owners) but that doesn't mean we should just go along with it if we disagree. As supporters of the club we should have our say too. And more importantly we are no longer a desperate club desperately in need of the investment that naming-rights provide.

Most of the fans I talk to would prefer 'Filbert Way' and with buckets and buckets and buckets of cash due to come in next season it is not like the club can't afford to change the name back to something more suitable!

I always saw the naming rights as a temporary measure to get us through the dark days of administration. To repeat I'm hugely grateful to the owners for what they have done and how they have understood the history of the club so far.

Nevertheless, selling the naming-rights to anyone is no longer absolutely necessary to the club's financial future so the stadium's name should be changed back to something more appropriate for the fans and the people of Leicester.

zealot has made some very good points there. Filbert Way, the name itself has more heritage to Leicester due to the link with Filbert Street and also the word 'Filbert' to a degree. The stadium name King Power isn't too bad, and we're not the only ones who have sponsored names.

If we look at Man City's stadium. Like us with our ground, it was changed to a sponsorship name, the Etihad. But the difference is with them is that the site their stadium was built on is called Eastlands, and as I understand it is still sometimes referred to as Eastlands as well as the Etihad. It would be good if we could follow the same sort of route as Man City in that regard with their stadium, albeit slightly different circumstances in comparison to ours.

The road has already been called Filbert Way for these reasons, you can call it whatever you want to call it Filbert St was not the given name to the previous stadium but its what people decided to call it if you want to do the same this time around you can
