New 16/17 Premier League Sleeve Patches

I know it's not really a big deal, and it shouldn't bother me, but I am shocked at how bad the new PL patches look.

In terms of crappy design, the only other thing that I can remember coming close is when I first saw the football kit abortion that was the Topps Tiles home kit.

"Why is Martin Allen holding up that shitty non-league shirt?", I wondered, before the horror dawned on me. Similarly, when I first saw this new PL patch, I asked myself why they had bothered designing a stop-gap "blank" patch before the new one is released. I genuinely thought this was like a working title for a book being written or film in production, that gets ditched when the writer/director thinks of something decent to replace it.

I am interested in art and design, and I want to get to the bottom of what went wrong here.

Here are the last ones:

Fine. This is a neat design that is fitting for one of the most prestigious football leagues in the world. Classy. I like the number of colours used, and the palette. It's a good, strong design. It has a nice balance of interesting and memorable. Also note, the Champs version is mostly gold - it's clear to see, even from a distance, that this patch is special. This is clearly worn by winners.

And the new ones:

Fvcking awful. So bland it hurts. Struggling to pay attention to it long enough to describe it. Only one colour plus background colour. Boring. It's mostly an ocean of boring white nothingness (there actually is a pattern on it, but it's only visible in some pics - pointless. Might as well not be there). Mind-numbingly boring.

That font, used on capitalised, lower-case words, makes me think playschool/nursery. Fine for an under-5's tournament. Not for the pissing Premier League. The placement of the text is totally wrong. Why am I turning my head on its side to read it? So many bad choices. The lion's head design is actually okay, but it could really do with another level of shading, or just something to set it off. It's too bland to be the focal point. Way too much empty space between the lion and the shitty border.

It may be a minor point, but bar the text, the only thing separating the standard patch from the champs version is the colour of the detail. Note the background is white on both. From a distance, they're very hard to tell apart. Simply swapping the colours on the Champs version would have made a big difference. Dark blue detail on a gold background.

I hate it. I hope whoever wins it next year gets something better, which shouldn't be difficult - I could pull a better design out of my arse.

Just to demonstrate - I spent about one minute altering it to see what I could do with it.

It's not great, and you might think it's no better, but I could accept something like this a lot easier than what they went with.

If you want to have a go at rescuing this travesty of graphic design, please post your results. I'd love to see them.

As I just posted in the kit thread, the new patches, particularly the gold one, is utterly horrendous. Its not a case of getting used to it, its just minging.

As a branding excercise I agree it's been an abject failure, the new one wouldn't look out of place on the side of a plumbers van. The old one was iconic imo.

Its just so painfully bland and underwhelming. If that's what the "best league in the world" can come up with, I pity us.

It's appalling. Someone at the marketing company who did this 're-branding' is laughing all the way to the bank. Ever since it got accepted I bet they've been pissing themselves - easiest money they'll ever make.

As you've said, there's nothing prestigious about it. The previous lion with it's foot on the ball gave off an air of PRIDE. The new one looks like something from a ****ing Disney film - there's no 'bite' to it whatsoever.

EDIT: The font, lol. Jesus ****ing Christ, that font. Embarrassing.

It's the in thing right now, flat textures, no drop shadow, sans serif font. The progression of the google logo is a good marker of what everyone else is going to do before they do it. I agree it's a bit meh but we'll probably look back at it as iconic in twenty years.

One of the reasons they changed was because we no longer have single sponsor  which was a restriction on the pl brand overseas.  I suspect there may have been a desire to lessen  the nationalistic aspecs  of it hence the minimising and trivialising the lion.

But its a national league, why should we kill off the lion? Drives me mad.

Because it's  trendy to down play such things

You're right about the sponsor - I'm sure that's why they decided to do a major rebranding.

I don't agree about the nationalistic aspects. I think the lion is even more prominent now than it was before. The new design is just a lion on a circle.

I really, really hope the current trends in design evident here pass quickly. I hate it that everything looks like it's marketed towards infants. Why do that? They don't even have any money. A part of me suspects that it's only going to get worse.

The circular shape, combined with the utter drivel that is the font...

You have to think they could have afforded to pay someone to do a decent job, right?

Probably the same people Villa paid over £1 million to redesign their badge
