Football Grounds: Unique Features

Recommended Posts

Was watching a documentary on Brunel last night and they revealed that the flagpole outside Anfield came from Brunel's SS Great Eastern, and is in fact they only remaining relic from that ship.

Wondering what other quirky and unique features are to be found at other stadiums. The Michael Jackson statue that was at Fulham until recently would rank pretty high.

Does the KP have any noteworthy ones?

How the hell did Liverpool end up with that lol?

I know Brentford's Griffin Park was the only stadium in the UK to have a pub on all 4 corners of the ground.

I don't know if this is true or not - Coventry's stadium had some part of the ground worked on by contractors from Leicester when it was being built. So the contractors buried a Leicester shirt under the foundations of the stadium or the pitch.

That is brilliant. And it seems to have worked

That's  where the ship ended up doing Atlantic trips from Liverpool  to the USA  before being scrapped. I thinks some of the remains of the hull still lie buried in the Mersey and can be seen at very low tides.

There's a similar story to the Leicester Coventry one regarding Wembley. Apparently the arch is stuffed with Boro shirts.

As for the flagpole, I think the ship was being broken up near by in a breakers yard and somebody rescued the pole.

Just found  this on Wikipedia

An early example of breaking-up a structure by use of a wrecking ball, she was scrapped at New Ferry on the River Mersey by Henry Bath & Son Ltd in 1889–1890 – it took 18 months to take her apart. At the time Liverpool Football Club were looking for a flagpole for their Anfield ground, and consequently purchased her top mast. It still stands there today, at the Kop end.[22] In 2011, the Channel 4 programme Time Team found geophysical survey evidence to suggest that residual ironworks from the ship's keel and lower structure still reside in the foreshore.[

Most obvious unique feature at an English ground must be the cottage at Fulham, surely.

I do like that Cottage.

Also do Bury (or Luton?) still have the score board from Filbo?

Heard the same thing about the KP and a Cov shirt buried in the foundations.

Spurs's weird flying saucer security box above the away end looks a bit odd.

I think that was Luton, not 100% though. And no idea if they still have it.

I know Chesterfield, before they got a new ground had some of the old seats from Filbert Street.

I missed a programme about Brunel!? :( What was it called, need to catch up.

I'd love to have gone to away games and seen some grounds that were still used for cricket, Bramall Lane as an example.

Griffin park only has 3 working pubs on the corners one of the 4 is closed. I don't know if that invalidates that stat or not.

Aviva Stadium in Dublin can pour a pint of Guinness in 6seconds or something else ridiculously quick!

The stadium can poor a pint? That's more impressive than the 6 seconds! lol

It's an old one, done by Clarkson.

I always think Yorkshire playing cricket at Brammal Lane is interesting. Northamptonshire also used to share their ground with Northanpton town.

Isn't Bramell Lane the oldest major stadium still used for professional football match, or something like that?
