desertfox2 Posted 15 August 2016 Posted 15 August 2016 Best asset is his finishing. Great player to bring on after 70-80mins if we are hunting a goal and playing against a side hanging on but that's the limitations of King. As I said before I wish he was better than he is as he has been incredibly in what he has been involved in with the club. And it always feels even better when King scores as he's a legend but he is a limited footballer and unfortunately not good enough to build a side around.
Fox92 Posted 15 August 2016 Posted 15 August 2016 It's fair to bash most players after Saturday's pathetic performance. On King, he didn't do enough. I said in the ground at the time when the teams come out I was surprised to see him start - not knowing Mendy was away obviously. Drinkwater was doing the work of two and King was anonymous (as they say). Goes sideways to much and is often invisible. How many times did Drinkwater get frustrated. We proper miss Kante and I'd go with Amartey against Arsenal.

I saw a graphic the other day which basically showed how important Drinkwater is to us in terms of our build up play. Practically everything goes through him one way or the other. With Kante Drinkwater had a dream partner as he could pretty much play freely knowing he was covered and focus on building attacks with his passing range. Hopefully he can get that with Mendy or Amartey. Drinkwater is a very, very clever player and would have known King was to attack minded for a 2 and been playing in handcuffs looking for danger behind all the time
whoareyaaa Posted 15 August 2016 Posted 15 August 2016 I can't believe we have gone into our first game of the season with King starting. as much as I like the bloke he just isn't good enough offers nothing! Its a myth.

Kante offered protection to pretty much every player. Mainly Drinkwater, but even if any defender went forward Kante would sit in. He was proper box to box. King isn't as strong as Kante or physically fit as Kante. That's why I would have gone with Amartey first. From what I've seen of him he had the pace which, again, King lacks.
Jimmy Posted 15 August 2016 Posted 15 August 2016 If we start with a 3 man midfield King would be an excellent choice for one of the spots as he would have the chance to get forward get into the box ands score, in a 2 man midfield he just isn't physically dominant enough to cope
Clever Fox Posted 15 August 2016 Posted 15 August 2016 Kings strength is Goal scoring and receiving the Ball off others. He's never going to be the aggressive ball winning mid fielder we badly need. I'd like to see Amartey get a run as I think he could develop into our Sissoko.. He'a quick, so can get around quickly and is comfortable with the Ball, He also has goals in him.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 15 August 2016 Posted 15 August 2016 I said this in another thread, the possible reason Drinkwater & King didn't work too well on Saturday is because they are both similar technical players, whereas last season we had the commanding tackling ability of Kante which complemented the distribution ability of Drinkwater. I do not think it is down to King because it didn't work, he's a classy midfielder, goes about what he does subtly and he's also one of our best finishers. Let's not forget like any partnership needs time to gel, i.e Musa and Vardy, Morgan and Hernandez. Because King is subtle about what he does he's seen as ineffective. I don't think Drinkwater and King will be the long term partnership if I'm honest, as I think CR wants to play Mendy/new CM signing, but I still believe King is a key option for us. He's good enough to start regularly for us IMO, many don't seem to think so and that's fair enough I get that. I feel the best way we can utilize King is in a CAM role, with Drinkwater and Mendy/Amartey as the holding CM's.

It's NO coincidence that Drinkwater shone so much last season. Firstly, he's a good player in his own right, secondly he had time, space and inclination to play his best football because he knew Kante would do the 'dirty work'. Izzett and Parker used to say the same thing. Izzett further upfield of course. The inclusion of Lennon, with his great engine, tackling and positional sense meant they had time to do what they did best. It will be interesting to see how Drinkwater gets on this season without his outstanding partner. It won't be King I'm afraid. I'm hoping it'll be Mendy. And I think it WOULD be William Carvalho if we went in for him. Which looks unlikely.

Bamba's Babes Posted 16 August 2016 Posted 16 August 2016 He is unable to play in a two man midfield with the way we want to play. Only passes sideways and backwards. Magic happens when you pass forward.
