Richmondfox Posted 17 August 2016 Posted 17 August 2016 In reality it will be more beggers/pickpockets coming up from London, taxis ramping the price up and off licences selling more single cans.
Foxes1 Posted 17 August 2016 Posted 17 August 2016 I am sure we will get treated in the same way when we go to abroad. None of this here come the English lets shut all the bars etc

Manwell Pablo Posted 17 August 2016 Posted 17 August 2016 I'm quite sure these fine fellows would appreciate a friendly Bojourno, a trip round the Curve and excursion up to the Space centre What a splendid idea Leicester City Council.

Did the Council actually ever tweet info about visiting the city during games? Not once...every prostitute in the county took advantage of the attention, but poor Richard III got no love. Leicester council are clueless. Leicester nearly broke twitter last year.

EGBFitness Posted 17 August 2016 Posted 17 August 2016 Everyone knew we was going to be playing European football back in March, you'd think the council would of been actioning things a little sooner than a month before arrival. Polishing shit and 'educating' residents to say Halo isn't going to bring repetitive tourism! good of way to start would of been allowing the club to develop around the King Power with fan villages etc with bars, stalls and interactive games/activities.

What you trying to suggest? Im sure this crowd would love a cheeky trip down 'the golden mile', time in new walk museum followed with a barge down foxton locks before hitting the KP for a pleasant evening of entertainment. I sure hope everyone in Leicester have a smile on their face and know how to say hello or else the experience will be a waste of time

But it's also not going to cost a great deal and the staff involved are already spending their time "promoting the city." Just about every council in the country will have similar teams, even in ****ing Bradford or Milton Keynes or Wakefield or wherever. Shit, even Coventry probably spends some money trying to convince people it's not a dive. Hull is the City of Culture and makes Coventry look like ****ing Monte Carlo.

They are all being picked up from the station booked in for a trip to the Islamic bookshop and early buffet at Shimla Pinks. The council think it will be a fantastic way to build bridges.
Guest Bilo Posted 17 August 2016 Posted 17 August 2016 Massive opportunity for the city, all joking aside. Deride the initiative as naïve and disorganised, you might actually be right, but Leicester is in the midst of trying to reinvent itself from unremarkable industrial city in the East Midlands to a historic and cultural centre, and has been since Richard III was discovered. Bar the Rugby World Cup, Leicester hasn't really been a hotbed of international sport and I'd say 99% of those fans visiting from abroad will be in Leicester for the first time. If they've been to England at all, it's unlikely they'll have ventured far outside of London or the North West where most successful English teams are based. Therefore, the council will sense the chance to market Leicester as a serious Midlands hotspot that will rival, and perhaps overtake, other historic cities like Nottingham and Lincoln.

Bilo, you, and IMO the council, miss one rather glaring point. There is absolutely nothing exciting about Leicester, it is unremarkable, it is not a cultural city, it is not a particularly nice city architecturally, quite a few parts of it are rather unpleasant to look at actually. It has little to offer in the department of landmarks (that shit clock tower does not count) it has little to do that most other citys in Europe cannot offer (The Curve and the Space Centre are a bit shit lets face it) It is not an overally good night especially when compared with Nottingham. There is nothing to pimp out, there is no way on gods green anyone who comes here is going to A) want to come back B) recommend it to a friend for any other purpose than going to watch the team that pulled off one sports greatest miracles. There is nothing to Market, and one dead king with a back defect is not going to turn Leicester into Barcelona!

Every dog has its day & at this moment in history this is a time to be proud of Leicester & proud of living here. There are far many worse places to live in the U.K as I'm sure most away travellers will know. Before the 1992 Olympics Barcelona was not the beautiful city it is now. It was a bit if a shithole with a decent football team.

It's an opportunity to promote the city, they're hardly going to ignore it. The comments about foreign football fans are dumb. You think EVERY travelling fan of every club from a slightly cool, edgy, ultra appreciating country is going to be some violent, piss head nutter? We have fans that are looking forward to a few trips away to some different cities, not just for the football, don't see why other teams wouldn't be the same. Whether they are violent nutters/ultras/pissheads or not is fairly irrelevant. Most of these fans are used to paying €15 or less for matches, and f-all for public transport. They're generally frugal, working class and don't take kindly to needless expenditure. The vast majority of these will be fans looking to limit costs in any way they can because they'll have two other trips to fund on limited income. That means boom town for the offies and hostels and a significant clean up bill at Vicky Park and the Clock Tower.

I think signs and pointing people towards bars and the city centre is a good idea. I also think a number of football fans would look into staying a couple of days making it in to more of a trip, but unless we put on extra flights to east midlands with added transport to Leicester then most will fly to London, get the train up and then go back to London for a couple of days. They will have done a fantastic job if they get anyone to stay in Leicester for any more than the night of the game, but fair play for trying. I come from Leicester, I dont think even I want to stay more than one night....

In all honesty, as an American currently living in Rome (and with a wife in the tourist industry), Leicester does have stuff to offer. First of all, location. If you are visiting England, it's in the middle, and close to Nottingham and Stratford, which are huge tourist destinations for US tourists, but not where you want to spend the night. Second, within the city, the RIII stuff is actually a big deal right now; also, more could be done with the Roman angle; and third, is the countryside, which is a big deal for us foreigners. Heck, one of our restaurants in Rome is even decorated with illustrations of a foxhunt in Leicestershire. Leicester is sellable, especially as an affordable "home base" for people wanting to spend a week or two in England.
