Plusnet Fibre - recommended?

Thought about putting this on the computer forum but that seems to discuss mainly games.

 

Currently with Virgin and have been very happy with their internet with both the speed and reliability. However with another price hike - 3 in a year - I am looking at my optons.

 

I know Plusnet basically uses the BT infrastructure/network as the others except Virgin do, but what sort of speeds do you get with their fibre and also what is the reliability  like? Looking at their website I can get - in theory  - a comparable broadband/phoneline deal for £20 / month less than my current deal withh Virgin!

Depends how close you are to the exchange I believe.

I would give my right arm to have access to fibre broadband. I live out in the sticks so still 18 months until I can get it which is a real ball ache. If you can get fibre at a similar price to what you're paying now, I'd snap their hands off. From what I've heard it's the ducks nuts but would be keen to hear from others on here what their fibre experience is like?

I pay an extra £10 a month for fibre broadband with talktalk. I'm supposed to get up to 38mbps but I usually get around 20, which is enough for my needs.

Plus net fiber is good but don't pay for the fiber extra those seeped are immy achievable if you live next to the exchange

I would be wary of Sky. Just signed up for them and I am on the point of complaining about their poor service. I have been monitoring their speed for the last week and it has varied from 0.44 Mb/sec (much slower than my phone!) to (today) the unprecedentedly modest heights of 5.73 Mb/sec (almost twice the speed of the previous best). Sometimes however it is so slow it can't even load the speed test tool. Because it varies greatly from day to day I am inclined to blame Sky. If it was consistently very low it would most likely be down to the manky old length of copper cable from the exchange. And before you ask, I don't live in an isolated rural backwater, I live near Donnie in South Yorkshire.

It's unbelievable really mate.

Weve got the Virgin VIP package...basically everything sports, movies, champs league etc..

The Internet FLIES. I can download a movie in a couple of mins or an album in around 30 seconds to a minute.

And no effect by the weather like you get with a dish.

I've got unlimited BT fibre & it runs at around 45 mbps.  I live a fair distance from the exchange & with regular broadband it was running at a low 4 mbps.  I've never had a problem with my fibre connection being lost for no reason & I don't think I've ever had to press reset.

 

After reading this thread, I thought I would check how much I was paying.  £38 a month!  Seriously?  I never realised it was so much.  The phone line is nothing more than a nuisance for cold callers & I hardly ever download anything.  I suppose at the time, I got it in for Kodi & it is reassuring that the speed is there if you need it........but £38.

What package have you got TV & Calls too? I would like to get mine DOWN to £38. I have the basic Virgin package but negotiated 'free' calls. TV is basic channels (you get more on freeview) It is now costing us £53! It sounds you have what need because the phone 'deal' isn't a deal at all!

BT unlimited here too and it runs at around 54mbps wired.  As you point out, BTs service is extremely reliable and very rarely drops out.  We've had one major fault which was corrected within 24 hours and customer service were very good at keeping us updated on repairs.

 

Is that £38 including line rental?  If so, that is a pretty good price for infinity 2.  Infinity 2 is £30 per month then £18 for line rental.

BT were doing a deal on their TV packages for infinity customers.  I managed to get their top TV package for £10 per month for 12 months.  Even without a UHD set, the BT Sport UHD channel is extremely detailed - I love it.  Really looking forward to the Leicester CL games on that channel.  Compare this to a similar package on Sky, minus Sky Atlantic and around 200 worthless channels and box sets and it works out £33 a month cheaper.  The YouView box is also very impressive, no problems with it at all, you can save yourself the pointless installation fees as well, and it takes up a fifth of the space the Sky+ box took.

 

Now Sky send me letters to come back for half price.  They can do one.

I've got BT Infinity, but I'm not sure it's Infinity 2.  Never even heard of that.  I think it's £20 for the fibre & £18 for the line rental.  Not really bothered about free calls as I tend to use my mobile to ring anyone. 

 

I got free BT Sport for a year when I signed up, but didn't realise you needed an existing box (or Sky box) to be able to watch it - so never got any use out of that.  I've got Freesat & not really a massive telly watcher.  I probably watch BBC Four more than any other channel.  Kodi fills any gaps.

 

They dug up the whole village in June to lay cable, but I don't think I've heard anything but complaints about Virgin's service.

I'm on BT Infinity 2, £18 line rental + £30 for Infinity & call plan. Just done a speed test @ 70 mbps. i do a lot of downloading / streaming so worth every penny. Never gone wrong in the 2 years I've had it

Can't comment on plus net.  But we pay for ee fibre not the 70mbps version think it's 38mbps

 

However at times we get as high as 76.

 

However I've just checked and tonight I'm only getting 26. Normally drops at 4 pm when kids get home from school and around 9 or 10 at night. Had a few buffering issues when streaming movies when we 1st had it installed but no recent issues.

We're about to change over to Plusnet next week.

 

We're going to apparently get fibre around Christmas.

Try ringing Virgin. PlusNet is cheap for 6 months but then £32 after that for phone line and up to 38mb. You can get 50mb with Virgin for under £30, just say you've had the letter about the price increase and someone will sort you out. Just let them know you want to pay under £30.

Would not touch TalkTalk, worst company I have been with and as for BT, I was going to go with them and then decided against it but in between their customer service was awful.
