on a more serious note, southgate's future will depend on whether he has the bottle to ditch Rooney. (When has he ever performed at a tournament since Portugal?)

If if he was prepared to drop Rooney now and allow the team to play at a better tempo and grow together then he would have a chance of doing OK in a couple of years.

That doesn't fall in with The FA's remit.

If he drops Rooney, he definetly wouldn't get the job, The FA simply wouldn't allow it.

Vardy just didn't have any space to run into and it felt like Southgate was just giving him a run out just to see if it changed anything, obviously vardy gives you enthusiasm and a wanting to run on to the ball but if there is nothing to run onto it is pointless. Being England manager requires you to make big decisions and one of those is to drop Rooney to the bench, who knows it might do him some good and the team in general

Haven't been to see them at Wembley for about 5 years, does it still take an age to get through once you've signed in on their site?

It can't be for traffic, I reckon they employ the method so you think tickets are selling faster than they actually are, hence you rush to pick your block and go straight to check out.

No mate very quick, had picked a couple about 9 rows back near the halfway line, you get to see the most sideways passes there.

Its a big call to drop Rooney, especially as he gets closer to Peter Shilton's record. However watching the game yesterday it is clear by just sitting in CM trotting round he is filling a space that could be occupied by somebody younger who can add more energy in there.

In his defence he can pick a pass, which is great, but Jose doesn't suffer fools and there is no chance of him playing that position at Man Utd.

Last night we were playing against opposition slightly above the standard of Coalville Town in my opinion and Rooney was able to get away playing there. Against tougher opposition who will be too classy or against opposition who will press and work their socks off he will be a passenger.

England need a strong manager with the bottle to not only drop him from the side, but from the squad. He is just hanging around waiting for the caps record and stopping others progress.

Southgate is a first class idiot.

Bringing Glen Johnson into the squad for starters. Whats that all about? Dropping DD as well? Crazy. He has been one of the best all round central midfielders in the country for 18 months. IMO he should be starting ahead of the likes of Rooney and Henderson. He seems to have gone into some time machine and gone back a few years as somehow Walcott makes the side. He has had a couple of decent games for Arsenal and the old big boys brigade get wheeled out. Bertrand starting ahead of Rose? Yeah why not, lets drop a player who finally looks the real deal after seasons out on loan and now playing for a performing side in the league. Also Im not a Lingard fan at all. Im not sure he is as good as everyone goes on about. I stand to be corrected of course but in that position Id have Rashford all day long. The bloke just looks unplayable to me. Dropping Dier wasnt a bad thing as Im not sure what he brings as an all-round player and Smalling would get ahead of Cahill for me but thats a marginal call.

OK he had injuries to the likes of Lallana, Kane and Sterling but the whole feel of the squad just seemed to go back about 5 years.

Im not surprised by that final scoreline BTW.

For me, my personal opinion is the sooner Rooney retires from International football the better.

We need younger legs and play players where they play for their clubs week in week out.

Dier/Drinky/Noble/Lallana and any other English central midfielder having good season must be livid that a Striker is playing in CM wether that be in an attacking or Defensive role.

We need to move forward and have Dier/Drinky holding and Alli/Barkey/Walcott/Lallana attacking mid.

Rooney hasn't set the world alight when it matters, and now is time for change and more forward thinking to give the younger players time to gel on the pitch with England.

Give the younger players time to grow as International footballers, and learn from their mistakes along the way so in 2 years they will be better prepared for what faces them.

He was withdrawn with an injury?  How is that dropping him ?

as far as Rooney is concerned, I made my point earlier. He is surplus to requirements. There are poor international sides that have a star striker. Once he cannot play as a striker, he drops back into midfield to be the creative catalyst. are we really saying that our midfielders are so poor in this country that Rooney can be accommodated in this way?  Basically, it's an insult to the younger midfielders we have. Southgate needs to grow some. but he won't and he will go the same any as most England managers have done over the years.
