I mean, he was a controversial choice back when he was in his 'prime' let alone now. The folks in charge of england must be doing everything they can to distract from the shambles of the last year...by being even more unfathomably awful. Makes you wonder doesn't it. I don't think Simpson's the next Cafu by any means and I haven't called for him to get a call up, but the bloke's a pretty solid defender with a title to his name, and given they've literally resorted to Glen Johnson I think he's got a very solid case. How is this clown getting in ahead of him? They'll play like shit against Malta but they'll win 4-0 because Malta are about as good as Solihull Moors.
fuchsntf Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Great for Danny.gives him a well earned rest.Though a cap against Malra could well of been on the cards. Vardy..worst players with no form for years got their easy ride ticket. So why not Vardy. The core of the squad is imo not that bad, we desperately need like leicester to find another CB. If the guys see Smalling and Stones as the future, then start them keep them, develope their understanding. Dont dither with other experiments.Jagielka deserved his chance at the time honest player, but we should be looking elsewher. Cahill experienced need him around. Midfielders. Never understand Henderson selection, I have always liked him as a player, but not for England. The rest, no major complainst some are finding form and have pace and good movement.Walcotts last chance, never realised his potential one of Arsenals sick notes, younger but ditto for Oxo...Lingard why not..!! The others a must in my eyes. Strikers...Dont like sturridge getting automatic nods, should be left out to re-earn his right. Vardy kept on last seasons heroics. Rashford..yes yes and again yes.Sterling not as midfielder but forward as I see it. Wasted last 18 months, but churning out some good top football out. If he drives forward great, if he keeps passing and not take responsibility by using his pace and man on man skills, no use whatsoever. oh nearly forgot...Johnson, I'll mimick our Gary..."really!!!" What a total lack of imagination.Henderson can at least hold his game, Johnsons time as gone. Might he be seen as a Milner replacement...god forbid
TheLittleBigMan Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Put Fatima Whitbread in midfield. Let's get on with this sh*t.

I'm Walcott's biggest hater but this time he's actually earned his call up. He's been on fire in last 4-5 weeks. Fair play. I suspect he'll go back to being a useless sack of shite who's nicking a living very soon again but for the time being credit where credit is due.
st albans fox Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Johnson is an overlapping full back thats how England play. Simpson is a better defenser but he isn't good in the final third. we're playing Malta, not Germany! name an experienced better English attacking full back than Johnson. (Apart from walker and Clynne) southgate isn't going to risk putting a youngster or debutante into his first squad who is straight cover for someone.
Manwell Pablo Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Southgate out Nothing to do with Drinkwater, I'm actually glad he's getting some time off, but that squad
RonnieTodger Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Cannot be arsed with England anymore. Any passion or interest is drained out month-by-month. We've got about 8 players in there that play behind the striker. Phil Jagielka still being called up is a joke, but Glen Johnson? Hope they get by embarrassed by Malta.
foxy boxing Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 with drinkwater out he will get a good rest and recharge his batteries,i don't know if vardy will get a game but if he gets a rest too that would be for the best, southgate might as well play youngsters against malta and give them some experience although they won't get much because it's malta
Tuna Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Never thought I'd say this, but BWING BACK WOY! He's a clueless prat, but he's OUR clueless prat.
Nick Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Injured after yesterday's match.... More like knackered and needing a rest. Claudio has had a word in his shell. Right decidion ion fid player and club - sod England.
dannythefox Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 The day has come when it's not that great playing for your country, we never employ a manager that's a winner for a start so what does that say! Drinkwater not being picked is a joke. My days are over with England bent as ever how you can pick players that don't start for there club is beyond me.
Bryn Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Southgate has said today that Drinkwater is out with an injury. The lack of CMs in the squad suggests he was in.
AjcW Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Crazy isn't it, the right back situation... losing Clyne & Byram on the sam day is a kicker, but at the end of the day Walker will be playing both games so what on earth would the harm of having Simpson on the bench be.... and in writing that I shudder at the thought our 4th best right back is Simpson! Having said all that, this bloke is the manager of our U21 side, current right backs are Iorfa and Callum Chambers and surely would have been fine as back up for two games against meh opposition!!

Same as Henderson, not a big fan of either as players but both have earned it this time.

Fox 4 Life Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Just read an interview with Southgate where he clearly says we lost drinkwater over the weekend. If he wasn't injured he would have been picked. Doesn't sound like anything serious though so a couple of weeks off will be good.
foxy boxing Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 drinkwater just got a slight knock, glad he's not playing.these are just nothing games we will win and win comfortably and it won't mean a thing
Guest Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Maybe this is just what Vards needs. Looks as if with the national team it will be a case of 'fill your boots time', with a hatful of goals for all the strikers. If he comes on as a sub in the second half when the Maltese are tiring, he could grab a brace which should give his confidence a boost.
rmahrez Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Can't understand at all how Johnson is picked ahead of Simpson. Simpson basically played the whole season in a title winning team. Johnson is a 32 year old playing for the team 19th in the PL. The FA need to get a grip.
Tielemans63 Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Some further good news on the England front lads...
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 3 October 2016 Posted 3 October 2016 Years ago I would of cared, but now, it's just so dull to even worry about, same old players from the same old teams and on top of it all we now have Gareth Southgate as manager. Now let me look in my crystal ball........ I'm sure we'll win, qualifying will be easy from this group and then we'll have yet another disastrous tournament. yawn
st albans fox Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 10 hours ago, Paddy. said: Some further good news on the England front lads... That, in a nutshell is the problem. He IS pretty much the only leadership material we have. The experienced international pro with that mentality. some of the youngsters may go in that direction but too early yet. Henderson will probably be the next England captain and that means yet again, we will have to pick someone who isn't the best in their position !
