When You're Smiling

I'm not convinced it matters that much what the song is what would make it special is to get 30K people singing the same song.

30k people sing WYS will never sound like Jersesy Budd, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin or Louis Armstrong it'll sound like 30k football fans singing it.

Just sing it a bit slower but with gusto and a smile on your face.

That said I hate the Jersey Budd one

The impossible dream. Lyrically it's so so relevant and would sound fantastic if it caught on and everyone belted it out.

To reach the unreachable star. :D:scarf:

Great song, prefer the Matt Monro version

To return to the OP's argument, playing a singalong (i.e. Non Jersey Budd) version pre match would probably help it spread, so yes, liaison with the club about this to get it played is probably a positive step.

Great. I thought the video might help the youngsters to listen to the end mind. It would sound great though, especially after last season. How great would that be an anthem to mark our incredible achievement to sing down the years?

Any reason for my post being deleted?

Are you sure you submitted it as it's not on any hidden or deleted list?

Why aren't the FCC meetings in document posted on the club's / UFS websites anymore? Liked reading them...

Always felt it was more of a group pub song than a ground chant. Never really warmed to it in the 80's but for some reason I'm all nostalgic about it now as it makes more sense than ever.

@Fox92 set up a song choice thread which seems to have been deleted?

The other part of the problem is that it's a completely inappropriate (musically) melody, it's not an anthem at any speed, that's always sounded shit.

The only reason people cling to it is they think it's some sort of club tradition that'd be awful to let go.

In my lifetime (93 Filbo to now) it's literally never sounded impressive.

If it wasn't for the fact nobody else sings it, nobody would care. I get wanting something unique and I'm as envious as anyone else of the likes of Lords My Shepherd, YNWA, Sunshine on Leith, but they're all solid, sing-a-long anthems.

How the hell have I never seen this until now?

No different to Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau or, as I mentioned, Keep Right On then. But you can't tell me they don't both sound amazing when belted out by football crowds.

Any song will sound shit if people don't put the effort into singing it - It's that simple. Everything else is an excuse.

... I stopped reading there.

99.9% of the time I think you've got a pretty good point when you post.

That's just daft.

Come on, you can't tell me that musically that's an easy melody to learn compared to the likes of the songs you mentioned, or even when compared to WYS.

It's the best national anthem in the world for me, and sounds unbelievably good when Welsh fans in any sport sing it, but it takes you a fair while to learn the melody.

Who said anything about easy to learn?

By musically appropriate, I mean the song being an actual anthem.

WYS isn't. As Vac pointed out above, Jersey Budd had to basically re-write the melody in an attempt to turn it in to one and it was garbage.

As a run-of-the-mill chant it's fine enough but I get the impression a lot of people want it to be some spine-tingling anthem that the whole ground will boom out pre-match.

It's just not that sort of song. It never has been, either.

History and fate has just thrown us the biggest favour ever, anyway, a valid reason to try and teach all of L1 Italian and claim one of the best bits of music in history as our own.

Cmon, don't tell me you don't think Jobber and friends can nail that climactic bit of vibrato!

All'alba vincero, VINCERO! VIIIIIINCCCCEEEEEERROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

;)

All it needs it for everyone to stick to and sing one version, regardless of which one. But most people are too stubborn and won't accept any version, hence, it's never caught on. The reason YNWA works is because its played before kick off and everyone joins in. If WYS was played before kick off people would join in regardless of the version used.

Not that my opinion counts for anything, the impossible dream is just so appropriate for what we achieved last season and possibly what will be achieved in Europe this season, I'd love to hear that belted out "full choir" before kick off, be a great lift for the players too.

But they've been doing that at anfield for decades.

We don't do that. People think just because the song has been around forever that turning it in to an anthem and singing it before kick off would be traditional. It wouldn't. It'd be very new and no more valid than picking any other song and singing it.

At last WYS has some affiliation with our club. Picking a new song and playing it before the game for the sake of having an anthem?

Regardless of version or melody, WYS means something to me when I sing it, so I'd be happy to belt it out before every game.

Never really felt any affinity towards WYS to be honest. Mostly I think it's because I'm a cynic and the lyrics dont really work for me. I know the lyrics aren't important but when they're that bad, it is hard to belt it out with any passion. It would be a lot easier if it was literally gibberish.

I know it has a long history with the club but it's very much of its time and not everything that used to happen has to be made into a tradition. Any tradition that has to be forced on people isn't a proper tradition anyway.

If Bocelli recorded a version of WYS, would that work?

That pre match montage with him singing Nessun Dorma is still magnificent even now and I get the feeling people would sing along more to a Bocelli version.
