Kitchandro Posted 28 January 2017 Posted 28 January 2017 Just goes to show having a lot possession is a load of shit. It's what you do with it that counts and when we're trying to build from the back we've absolutely no chance. I have no idea what our game plan is anymore but last season's has gone out the window.
dedlock Posted 28 January 2017 Posted 28 January 2017 A game we should have won based on statistics. Derby's 2nd goal was a prime example of the poor defending that has blighted this season.2 midfielders in no mans land, too far behind the scorer who easily took advantage of Morgans lack of pace.
Charl91 Posted 28 January 2017 Posted 28 January 2017 Wait, Andy King was playing? I thought we were just giving them a helping hand by starting with 10 men.

We had 7 very good chances and 5 clear ones. How you can put all that together and say we were an abomination of a team is very strange. I understand at times we have played like crap and throw the odd decent performance in but its due to a lack of confidence. Mendy, Ndidi, Slimani, Ulloa, Amartey or Kapustka didnt even make the pitch today. I`ll say we will be OK, especially when we bring in a defender or two that we are obviously tracking. Ok so that's one chance where we went close. I can remember another where Gray passed it to the keeper. I can't think of any other decent chances apart from our goals, both of which were from corners and one of those was a freak own goal. We hardly battered them. I think you're deluded tbh, we're in deep shit and these performances have been going on for most of the season. I'm seeing very little encouragement.

We should have won anyway, regardless of statistics. We were in control when we got the goal. And we were in control for the majority of second half. Lets not forget Vardy and Gray both missed "easy" chances and Gray hit the post. We just can't defend. Derby weren't that good. If we actually got the ball down and ran at their defence then it would've been better.

Did anyone else notice Ranieri kept telling our players to keep the ball on the ground and less hoofing? Never seen him do that before. We're an absolute abomination of a team but we dominated them on their own patch in the second half and creates 4-5 clear cut chances and should have won. We'll beat them in the replay. Definitely the first time Ranieri's done that. It was the right approach for the match - if confidence wasn't shattered we would have won easily with that approach. If Ranieri stays I wouldn't be surprised if we start evolving into more of a team that plays intelligent football. We are never going to be a heavy possession team in this league but it would be good if we didn't just hoof it long every time. We'll need quite an overhaul in players to do that of course and I suspect some of our players that can do it (e.g. Mahrez) won't be around. But if we want to consistently be a solid top 10 team then we need to have the ability to do it.

I get the point that he doesn't dominate games but on the flip side we have numerous complaints that we barely keep the ball and here is a player who does yet gets slaughtered for not doing enough. By and large, when King got the ball, he did what you'd want- he gave it to Drinkwater, Gray, Albrighton, Mahrez who you'd expect to create something. Ok, he doesn't sprint from box to box, or go around thumping into tackles, maybe he's not good enough anymore but I think the criticism is harsh as there were players who offered far less than him in their positions.
Strokes Posted 28 January 2017 Posted 28 January 2017 I thought kingy was one of our better performers.

I don't think I've seen King "hoof" the ball in all his time here. Simpson, Morgan and Huth have never been possession players - they're stoppers, and good ones in some phases, but a weakness when it comes to distribution.

WHEN King gets the ball is the key thing here. If you counted up exactly how often that was in 90 minutes I bet you wouldn't have to take your socks off to count on your toes! He was anonymous and pointless just for a change. Whilst I know that we've got Burnley on Tuesday, when we've got got around £25 million spent on two midfielders, I would have thought one of them could have partnered Drinkwater. Let's face it, they could both benefit from more game time experience. Neither of them have been overworked.

I don't think I've seen any team look as shattered as Derby did the last 20 minutes. Even when they got possession in their own half they hardly had the energy to move forward and were happy to run the ball out of play and take a momentary breather. Credit to them, they worked like trojans to contain us in the first half - in much the same style as we did last season. But it sure took it's toll and the more we passed the ball the more it hurt. Not quite a battering I'd agree more a tightening thumbscrew that hurt something wicked.
ScouseFox Posted 28 January 2017 Posted 28 January 2017 we had more possession in the first half too, and were 2-1 down having mustered 1 shot on target. it's bullshit.

We had 62% possesion and kept the ball better because the opposition are wank . Ranieri on the sideline appeared to give instructions to keep the ball on the ground and pass it but as @Tuna said with Huth and Albrighton it's hard. When we play well like yesterday its because the oppo are shite. When we beat Man City its because of a clueless Guardiola. Lets be fair here and judge the game on its merits. Derby are one of the in form teams and most would agree that they have the squad that should be at least play off standard. They were at home as well. Despite the crap we have played at times this season surely people can peel there blinkers off and say we actually played well yesterday against a side 2 points from the play offs. Derby were crap because we made them look crap. You only have to watch how Wolves are getting on at half time vrs Liverpool to understand the cup is a bit of a leveller but you have to look at how many goal scoring chances we created to know we actually played well yesterday, something that we havent done on many occasions this season.

Vardy had a header from six yards that went straight at the keeper. Okazaki had a chance from six yards with the GK on the floor and could have lifted it a foot over him but hit it straight at him. Gray not long after coming on had an almost identical chance where he hit the ball straight at the GK Okazaki had a header from 7 or 8 yards that hit the defenders arm Gray hit the post Those attempts were so nuts that the ball went straight into the GKs hands where he didnt even have to make a proper save that when the camera zoomed in on Scott Carson the gap toothed bugger was beaming like a Cheshire cat thinking how the hell have I not conceded. At that point I thought if we couldnt score after those chances that it was written we would lose. Destiny and all that shite. As for your other point of us being in the shite. I agree. We need to improve and we have some very good players who need to start playing for us. However, that has nothing whatsoever to do with yesterdays performance which was decent and not the horror show some are making it out to be.
