Some DIY advice please

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm staying with a mate and his Mrs, they're off on holiday next week and as they've helped me out a lot, I'm looking at surprising them and sprucing up their kitchen.

They've just tiled the floor, but the rest of it is really dated and they don't have the budget to get it all done.

How good is tile paint? Will it look half decent?

And is there any way I can paint these cupboards? I think you call them veneer? Smooth surfaces.

I'm usually ok with DIY stuff, but not attempted anything like this before.

I'm guessing @Webbo might know?

It can be done and there are special paints for it. The kitchen takes a lot of wear and tear so never considered it myself.

You'd also need to be absolutely certain you've removed any remnants of grease etc.

I would leave well alone.

Your plans might not be to their tastes, you might mess it up and their is the possibility they could find it quite 'odd' that someone has done something like this in their absence.

My advice is take them for a slap up meal somewhere or perhaps a pair of Leicester tickets.

Paint the town red with them.

let fluffy cuffs be your guide.

and then blame it on him when it goes horribly wrong.

They've discussed doing it themselves and want it done, picked out colours and stuff.

Just thought it'd be good for them to come back to.

Cheers for the advice

Wash down the surfaces(cupboards and tiles) well and then use this primer http://www.zinsseruk.com/product/bulls-eye-1-2-3/ . After that you use undercoat and gloss or satinwood.

In my opinion painted tiles never look that good but it's all down to taste.

Would I use that on cupboards and tiles?

Then just standard paint afterwards?  No specialist thing?

Is one of those mini rollers the best thing to apply with?

Sorry for all the questions!

Obviously you know you're mates best, but I think you need to think about how they will react. Even if you did it exactly how they want it, I reckon most people would be a bit uncomfortable with someone making semi-permanent changes to their home without their permission.

Giving it a proper clean including shampooing carpets, maybe buy a new set of towels and stuff like that for them?

Yes, and then the sort of paint you'd use on woodwork gloss/satinwood/eggshell whatever finish you prefer. I'd us a mini foam roller ,and a brush for cutting in with obviously. It's not a 5 minute job, it can be quite fiddly. You need to plan it so you can leave the door open as they dry.

I did that. Never again. I woke up one morning and nearly had a heart attack. I thought a naked skydiver was about to land on me.

100% this.

Or pay Webbo to do it, after he has sat down with them and discussed what they want to do.
