The 24-year-old shot-stopper impressed on loan with Aston Villa last season, keeping eight clean sheets in 21 Championship appearances after making the short-term switch from Old Trafford in January. It is understood that Villa would like Johnstone back on loan this season, but the Mirror is reporting that Premier League clubs West Brom, Leicester, Huddersfield and Palace are also interested in the goalkeeper. Palace have been linked with a move for a new goalkeeper to add competition for Wayne Hennessey and Julian Speroni, with reports suggesting that Steve Mandanda is likely to return to France, amid interest from his old club Marseille.

Hope we pull a fee for him....Another one who wants out pretty badly. I wonder, just wonder, if he was promised a bigger role here. Seemed odd at the time that Germany's usual 3rd choice 'keeper, a long time Bundesliga regular, would settle for being back-up here ! thats true,. he probably thought he'd be able to get the number one jersey from KS, think Johnstone would be a decent addition tbh, pretty young in keeper terms, but i suspect he might go Villa again since he'd be playing regular 1st team football
lgfualol Posted 1 July 2017 Posted 1 July 2017 Thought we were signing Janupovic or whatever his name is from Hull?

Leicesterpool Posted 1 July 2017 Posted 1 July 2017 He's better Zieler but I'm not sure if he's any better than Hamer.

Zieler said at the time he signed that he was promised that it would be an 'open competition' between him and KS for no. 1, and that he had confidence in his own abilities. Clearly he's since realised that displacing a PL winning keeper and (vice) captain isn't as easy as he thought it would be...

Anyway, he's our third choice keeper, how good do you want our 3rd choice keeper to be? He'll be on a very modest wage compared to the rest of the squad, he isn't great but at worst he'll make the bench. It's hard enough to get a decent keeper who's happy to be a no.2, never mind get anyone decent in who's happy not even making the match-day squad.

From what I've heard I think his wage is far too high for a third choice keeper and he is being paid far too much for such an average keeper. As you say I'm sure he's happy to see out his contract on the money he is on. Contract expires at the end of this coming season.

PL clubs have to add the extra incentive for squad players because not playing regularly or at all can affect the players future contracts. We're a Premier League club, no matter how good the players we sign are, backup or not, we're going to have to pay them well.
