Kitchandro Posted 10 August 2017 Posted 10 August 2017 I don't think 4 successive seasons in the Premier League is an achievement on it's own considering the small clubs that have been here for much longer. As a club, considering our crowds, we should be expecting that. I suppose a lot of people will feel we've peaked and we're on the way to stagnation. Certainly there is an argument for the first bit of that sentence, and potentially the second part too with our underwhelming choice of manager. But in perspective we've clearly had it so much worse, the Premier League is where it's at and we're a club in a strong position. Of course, there will come a time when we long to have it this good.

I think that this team will beat that. Does anyone know what the record is for consecutive seasons played in the top fight? It's 12 - 1957 to 1969. We had 4 seasons in the Prem under O'Neill, 1996-2000. We shouldn't be relegated any time soon if we do the right things, the club is certainly strong enough. I'm interested to see how the recruitment is over the next year or two, the football side of the club has been run so well for the last few years but we fell below our own standards last season.

I get the feeling that this will never stop, we'll always be vying to become an established top flight team. A bit like it's always gonna be Liverpool's year.

Blue ROI Posted 10 August 2017 Posted 10 August 2017 Is 2004-14 the clubs longest time outside the top flight?

Must be about 7yrs ago when nothing happened all season of any remote concern or fortune. I wouldnt mind it tbf, just a year to enjoy being in the PL if that makes sense. No relegation to worry about and a nice little cup run would be great then push on the year after I'd probably put it the Sven/Pearson round two season 11/12 where we just pottered around top half without really threatening. That's 5 seasons in between with a dramatic play off loss, thumping the league, dramatic escape from relegation, thumping the league again, CL run and a dice with a relegation battle. Even go back over, Svens media circus, play-offs in Cardiff, league one tour and that relegation. Only one in the last ten has been particularly uninteresting.
FoyleFox Posted 11 August 2017 Posted 11 August 2017 I read somewhere in the week that out of the previous 27 seasons 19 have involved us either being in the play offs, relegated, winning the league, winning a cup, or being in a cup final. We don't want for excitement.

Who would have thought this when we were promoted just over three years ago? Where we've come from and where we are now just don't compare; even more so if you want to take this back to when the Srivaddhanaprabhas took us over. It has been an amazing past three years, certainly it has never been boring. The great escape, the title win, the second escape and a new manager, selling players for £30m+, buying players for £30m+, Champions League quarter-final, two players in an England team at the same time... 3 years ago, who would have thought? We are improving the team; no more having to sell our best player to buy the players we need in three other positions. You can't get a ticket most games for love nor money. It's almost surreal. I find the doom-mongers to be completely bizarre. Surely they're just joking, right? We're going to have another solid season and next year will be our 5th season in the top flight, which hasn't happened in too long. We can and almost certainly will become one of the established Premier League teams in a season or two. So we're not going to shell out £50m on a midfielder... good! Our record transfers have a habit of disappointing anyhow. Keeping Mahrez, as looks likely, is pretty much the same as signing a new £50m midfielder, especially as he seems to have realised that if he wants his dream move, then he needs to knuckle down. Years ago we would have lost a player like that, as it is, we seem to have learnt from the Kante deal and if you want our best players, you pay what they're worth! We have plenty of cover in most positions, young and promising players who can push on, owners who are willing to invest. No doubt the Johnny Comelately glory hunters associating with the club are thinking that these should all be a given, but anyone who has been a fan for years should be salivating at the mouth and looking forward to what is ahead of us for the next 9-10 months. I'm not saying we're going to win the league again, I'm not saying top four, but I can't see why not, with fair winds, we can't make it into Europe again. I for one am really, really looking forward to the season ahead. Whatever comes, it won't be boring, but I just have a feeling it's going to be tinted blue. COYB! 2017-18 As long as we all sing, apparently, everything will on be fine.. Blue Armie Blue Armie Trav Le Bleu Armie....
