Also we don't have enough possession to afford to be able to play three strikers. We will never pick a team that starts with three strikers. If Deeney comes here he comes as a sub which is why it will never happen because it's bad business for us and a bad move for him. He's gone to 3 at the back a few times, employing Chilwell as the wing back and shoving Ulloa up front. Agree on the possession front although I was half thinking Ndidi and Iborra to support that but I haven't seen enough of Iborra to know if he can fulfill that role. I really just dont want to see us continue with 4-4-2 so rigidly. We had the perfect storm for a season but it doesnt work enough anymore.

dedlock Posted 11 August 2017 Posted 11 August 2017 This smells of lazy, recycled news based on the January bid.

We'll have a similar amount of games this season and it's clear as day our front two will be Iheanacho and Vardy. Considering there has been been no concrete links to Slimani, Okazaki and Ulloa all summer why on earth would you want us to bring in a sixth striker to sit on the bench who is at the wrong end of his career and cost us another £18m and £70k or whatever a week? I wouldn't. I'd want him to replace Ulloa etc. Four would be plenty, but they should be the best we can get. Deeney, IMO, is better than Leo & Shinji.

Merging Cultures Posted 11 August 2017 Posted 11 August 2017 We have enough forwards now. It was 6 weeks ago and isn't going anywhere.

Most of the time it doesn't even make the press although with social media and 24hr TV/Radio sport channels it's harder to keep stuff quiet these days. Leicester have tracked Deeney for a while. Can't see him coming this window unless others are shifted out. In terms of a fee for him, he's more valuable to Watford than he is to us. He wasn't happy last season, for various reasons, but then neither were a few of his team mates, mainly due to the manager. They were talking £18m in January. Watford have just signed Andre Gray for £18m. Gray scored 9 league goals last season. Deeney scored 10 league goals last season. Gray's 26, Deeney is 29, not a massive difference. I find it jaw dropping when I read he's "past his best" - how do they know that or is it just an opinion? In my opinion I think he's a much better all round footballer than some of our fans give him credit for and think he'd link up well with Vardy.

Always rated him but he did look fat and lazy last year. Can he get hungry again would be my only concern. As you say, with 5 strikers already hard to see this happening without players leaving.
sk3since03 Posted 12 August 2017 Posted 12 August 2017 I'd be upset if we paid 2m for Deeney let alone 20

I wouldn't say Deeney would be a bad purchase at £18m in the right circumstances but the timing would be horrific. Vardy and Iheanacho will be our front two and with us playing not much more than 40 games this season there will be little scope for rotation. We already have Slimani, Okazaki and Ulloa in the squad and we're not hearing much about any of these possibly moving on this window. Signing the 29 year old Deeney for good money to compete with Slimani, Okazaki and Ulloa to get on the bench is a terrible waste of resources from us and I suspect Deeney doesn't want to move and not be a regular starter.
