Doing my favourite pubs of Leicester tomorrow night -

Black Horse - Brauny Gate

Castle

Duffy's

Cherry Tree

Plenty in the Black Horse.

Castle was quiet, noticed the second room is no longer with the pub as such as looks to be a deli type gaff.

Duffy's I was in early, assume it would have picked up for the gig later that night. I think they have had to up beer prices recently.

Cherry Tree as ever was full of characters and extremely welcoming.

Mother’s Day lunch at The Griffin in Swithland yesterday was nothing short of epic.

As a massive roast potato fan I was very impressed that they come round and offer you as many extra ones and also extra Yorkshire puddings when you are in the middle of your roast.

Really good service to go along with the excellent food and wine.

Live not far from the Black Horse so go in semi-regularly and walk past it to go Tescos- have had a few busy Fridays of note which I’m chuffed about. The deli on the Castle is technically part of the pub, the main room has a hatch in it to serve out. Do some recent pork pies/scotch eggs.

Can’t beat a few games of pool in the Cherry Tree, can spend hours in there easily!

Is the Cherry Tree tied to a brewery? Seems like a freehouse. If they pushed the boat out on the beer it’d be a 9/10 imo

It definitely at least used to be M&B, but it certainly feels like a freehouse so I don’t know if that changed…

One of the most welcoming pubs I've ever been in, yet you'd expect the opposite from a hidden, 'run down' pub in a city known for people typically being reserved. I'm definitely going to make more effort to nip in.

Where to go before the game tonight? Taking a colleague for a few before the game and I just don't do it often enough to know where is decent anymore. Thanks - Nine bar and the Western if the Uber drops us on Narb rd?

I think those would be good as both likely to be fairly busy.

Hive & Honey's decor is a bit uninspiring but otherwise looks good. Ran as a collaboration between the Gaddabout and Dom (Thurlaston) so food and drink should be a good standard, Courtyard looks nice.

Punch Pubs has acquired four pubs from Leicester-based brewing company Everards.

The newly acquired pubs are the Old Kings Head in Long Buckby, Northampton, the Paget Arms in Loughborough, the Cricketers in Leicester and the Dog & Gun in Whetstone, Leicestershire. These now fall under Punch’s leased and tenanted estate.

Not sure I've ever knowingly been in a Punch Pub, I'm guessing this probably not great news though.

Are any of these decent or just a bit towny?

They make their pubs too homogenous and force their landlords to buy soft drinks through them. Plus they’re stingy with guest ale choice - they should take the handbrake off

Punch are probably the shitest of the major pubco’s which is saying something

Basically just a property company with beer taps

Your comment intrigued me so I looked up the pub on google and the first result I got was 'Angry gran glassed woman who asked her to wear a face mask'
