I hate flying as I always seem to get the fattest bloke at the airport try and squeeze into the seat next to me, on the last flight I had half his arse and his bingo wings draped over me, not pleasant, actually come to think of it my fear is fat people, not flying.

Sorry,I mistook you for an hockey-stick..

Absolutely hate flying.

Went on my first flight for 14 years last month, that was only a 45 minute flight to Dublin and hated every second.

My first flight was to Australia in 2000 and since then I've only been to Italy and Dublin, can't face it. Would love to get over the fear and have read all the books and statistics etc but nothing helps.

Mindfulness including meditation sounds like a good approach for you. I can relate to the control issue you mentioned - not in the context of flying, more things like health and sleep but the underlying anxiety is the same and mindfulness really does help address that.

Otherwise order some diazepam on the dark web or go to somewhere like India where they sell it over the counter and then you can self medicate. Flying on valium is a wonderful way to pass time.

Despite having flown about 200 times now it still terrifies me as well, I do relax when in the air and can then get down to reading and watching a film with a few drinks but the take off and landings for me are often horrid.

The only way I face it is by getting hammered (and I mean hammered as well, to the point of once being on all fours going through security in San Francisco and being covered in sick i before boardingn Atlanta) before I get on the plane, uncultured but it works for me.

I guess the people on the boarder in San Fran aren’t as bad as New York otherwise I guess that didn’t go down too well.

They were laughing, I've never been refused onto a flight yet despite being in some right states. I'm convinced they only turn you away if you are causing bother.

Yeah pretty much, more likely to cause issues if they refuse people than letting a pissed up person fall sleep and piss themselves haha.

Hasn't happened to me yet lol

I've pissed in some pretty desperate places as well over the years.

I only have 2 fears on this planet that actually bother me from time to time. Flying and elevators. Hate the crap out of both with a passion. Elevators I can avoid but whenever I need to fly anywhere I have to be drugged up to the eyeballs or turn into a mess.

If your doctor isn't giving you a large enough dose, either slap the bitch and tell him to stop being a bell, or get in to see another doctor.

I don’t like elevators either. Liked them even more when I got stuck in one. When the repair man turned up, his method of getting it going again was to send it up and down with me in it several times, as a log started forming in my pants.

The only thing that kept me sane was when I rang my missus to tell her I was stuck and waiting to be rescued. She was absolutely in stitches laughing at what I would be going through and somehow it calmed me down.

Valium for me. Collected a pack of 15 today via the docs.

I am okay on short haul, but I have a long haul coming and so need a bit of help.

I am okay in my seat if I can grip the arm rest and look out the window, but this flight will involve laying down and sleeping and going loo etc, so I am going down the Valium route.

What dose do you get? 4mg I think it was last time didn't help me but when I asked for higher dose the Dr just flat out refused.

Think it might be due to some of the stuff on my record.

I am not sure, but it’s a pack of 15 so I think I have enough to try them out on boring Tuesday nights, and I will have enough left for the flights at the dose I will need.

Everyone I have spoken to about it says everyone reacts differently so some will need higher doses than others. I am just going to try half a tablet to start with and go from there.

5mg - 15 of them. Still not tried one yet.

Do you smoke? Nicotine withdrawal increases anxiety - especially when flying. If so, in addition to any other anxiety meds you can get your hands on, you should wear a nicotine patch during the flight. If not, then ignore my advice. I used to be terrified of flying too, but it was more about nicotine withdrawal than anything else. Good luck finding a fix!

I don't mind flying on the bigger planes, with knowing that there's only an extremely low chance an unfortunate event could occur, but struggle to contain anxiety on small planes.

I've been on a few trips on my Step-Father's current and light aircraft and panic when there's strong gust or if the plane feels too close to the sea when on-board them.

The funny thing is if anything happens in a small plane eg the engine cuts out then you can glide to the ground but not on a jet.

I know what you mean though, I had a flying lesson a few years ago and, I know how daft this sounds, you don’t realise how much you have to wrestle with the plane to keep it going the way you want it to go.

If you are worried about flying don’t be. Think of how many flights a day there are and that Air Crash Investigation is only on series 18.

Sound advice ...    close thread ...
