Does anyone know a good website or have a good system for finding hotels in a city you are visiting?

Seems to me these websites like trivago, trip advisor, booking.com, expedia etc all just fling any old shite at you and try to rush you into booking something, they're all crap. None of them have all the hotels and no hotel is on all the sites. Seems like every time you go on a site they've got a different set to what they were offering before.

Anyone got tips or tricks?

Use TripAdvisor to find the hotels you like then use hotels.com or the others you mention to book the best price.

TripAdvisor ranks the hotels by ratings and you can also read other opinions, although take some with a pinch of salt!

Trivago is pretty good as it compares all the comparison sites.

I use a variety of sites to compile a shortlist, Trip Advisor to rate them, then book with the hotel directly.

Depends on the type of trip and where i'm going. For business trips I'm less fussy. If location is important then I combine with Google Maps and Street View to get a feel for the area.

Had mixed experiences with Booking.com - some have been fine, but the nice riverside apartment we booked in London turned out to not exist and we were "upgraded" to a flat in Millwall!

If your looking to go to a small independent place, find a price on booking.com, late rooms etc and call them direct. These websites take approx 10% commission on bookings so it's easy to get a better price by booking direct.

for the bigger chains, I find using late rooms etc does get best prices especially when combined with cash back from quidco or topcashback.

Maybe I'm judging these sites harshly but they just seem like a clickbaity flashing-light race to the bottom. I probably don't make enough use of the filters because I'm always looking for quite a specific subset of hotels.

I have expensive taste but no money. So whilst I'm not about booking into 10 bed hostel dorms anymore I'm equally wasting my own time looking at the top end.

I only use Airbnb now. Much nicer places at better prices I find.

Not sure it's always the case - I checked Airbnb for this particular trip and the prices were outrageous. However I have had good experiences with it too.
