It can only be one player a record fee when we signed him and I believe still a record. Really amazed no one else has said his name yet.

Please step forward a premier league record scorer

The first game I ever payed my own way for was as a teenager when I went to Leicester v's Portsmouth in 1994. £15 was a lot of money for me back then & I was so excited as the Mercury had broken the story of our record signing that day - Mark Blake for £360,000 (from Portsmouth as it happened). I knew it was going to be a game to remember.

It was a day I've never forgotten - we got trounced 3-0 and Mark Blake was abysmal and I remember just sitting there thinking what else I could have spend my £15 on!

So for me its not Mark Blake!

Can't comment on any signings before him, but since then, it simply has to be Matt Elliott. He became the captain and bedrock of the team for years - he was a large part of those 4 consecutive top 10 finishes and the League Cup win against Tranmere - with it being his game winning goal that kept us up in '96-97 and his 2 goals that won that final. On top of that you have the moments of magic, such as the double Cruyff turn on Deasailly, and a City career of 245 games.

(And we turned him from a lower league player into a player earning international caps while at the club - it may not have been the the most glowing international career with most memorable moment being against the Faroe Islands but it is a good recognition of his progress while at the club.)

I don't see how you can put Ulloa anywhere near that. A City career of 86 games is roughly a 3rd of Elliotts and reflects that he has been a bit part player for much of his time here. Yes: he had a couple of important goals in The Great Escape season and those unforgettable goals against Norwich and West Ham, but he was barely even starting.

So if you're keeping tally: for Elliott v's Ulloa you have: 245 games v's 86. A goal that actually secured survival v's a couple of important ones in the run in. 2 Goals that won us a major trophy compared to 2 goals that won us 3 points when we ended up with a 10 point cushion anyway. Club captain v's a bit-part player. International recognition v's not. Not even close is it?

Also - an honourable mention to Mark Draper who was fantastic for the 1 season we had with him. I'm reading this question as who has been best for us rather than the best player, so on the basis it was only 1 season, he can't touch the others but I'll echo Gerard's comments that it really surprised that he didn't do more after leaving us.

Elliott the choice for me. Had everything you'd want in a centre half apart from pace. Draper was a great player, and was head and shoulders above every other individual in that side.

Notable mentions for Ulloa and Sinclair (who i always thought was a bit of an underappreciated player).

Elliott was the best signing out of that lot because he was brilliant and stayed here for years. A cultured centre half who just about won everything in the air in both boxes.

Mark Draper was one of the best players we ever had. He was a beautiful footballer in a team of cloggers. I remember we played Tottenham and Klinsmann had signed for them and afterwards he said "I'd never heard of Mark Draper before but there he was running the game like a young Lother Mattheus".  Draper only lasted a season here but Klinsmann told Bayern Munich they should go and get him.

It's funny because I thought Draper would go on to be a top player but he never did that much after he left Leicester.

Mark Draper went on to Aston Villa with Brian Little. Never really featured after he left us.

Didn't he get a really bad injury 1st season with villa and was never the same again, bit like Izzet  with Birmingham?

Good shout with Sinclair Martyn.Dropped a few clangers but we certainly got our money’s worth out of him.Hit.

I was obsessed in my early teens about us topping the £350000 mark.We then signed Blake for £360000.Proving our ambition ?

We got an excellent return on Draper which the club used to strengthen the squad on our return to tier 2.He also did all he could to keep us up.

Ulloa scored the goals to keep us up and then chipped in with some crucial ones to win the thing.I think his fee was 10 mill after add ons.It has also made the club millions in the process.

Elliott wins though for me.Loyalty, goals scored, being part of a successful era,and the fact that a 2016 Elliott would have been the type of player to get in our title winning team.

Very well argued case for Matt Elliott over Ulloa. I think I’m in agreement.
