I'm guessing it's a mixture of reasons. Some tattoos may be because it's a subject someone feels passionately about, it may be a gesture, or more often than not I'm guessing it's because of the way it looks on the body. It allows people to express a style and in that way it's no different to asking why they cut their hair a certain way or wear the clothes they wear. Identity and aesthetics I guess

When people say: "What do you think of my new tattoo?"

What I'm tempted to say is: "Shite, like the rest of your shite tattoos."

What I usually say is: "If you like it, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks."

 

If they press me further, I generally tell them I don't like tattoos so I'm not going to give them the answer they want.

Their body, their choice.
